William Nott

I am trying to track the ancestors of my great great grandfather, William Nott. He was born in Chalgrave, Bedfordshire in c.1794. He and his wife Suzan Tredegar settled in Harpenden as grocers and cattle dealers. His children and grand children became farmers, grocers, drapers, hat manufacturs etc mainly in the Hertfordshire and London area although one son Robert Nott moved to Cheshire and settled there in the Macclesfield district and I believe his children in Ashton upon Mersey. We believe that William Nott's father may have been Samuel Nott and also born in Chalgrave. However we also think the family may have had connections in Herefordshire.

Any help would be fantastic.

For those looking for information on the Thomas Nott family line. I have found documents for several of the children through Barnard VT. If you are looking for the Samuel Nott line or proof of a family connection between Samuel and Thomas, Heritage Quest has a book titles History of Fulton County, IL. In this book page 834 is a reference to Samuel's son Dr. Thomas Nott, in it he states that his father was Samuel, his mother Amy Van Clief and that his grandfather was Thomas Nott a Revolutionary War soldier. I have documented our line through Samuel's daughter Samantha to myself. I need birth, will, death for Samuel

In the death of Mrs. Almeda L Nott which occurred at her home, 596 North Pearl street, yesterday, following an illness of two weeks from heart trouble, Janesville has lost a woman who has ever been known for her unselfish devotion to those who were dear to her. Mrs. Nott was a woman who always put herself in the background, but who had the interests of others always at heart; she did much work of charitable nature, and in her associations with people became respected for her faith and devotion to whatever cause she was interested in at the time.
Mrs. Nott, formerly Miss Almade L Shafer, was born in Whitewater in April, 1849, and was united in marriage to Albert F. Nott in January, 1872. In the village of Spring Valley. Soon after this she came to Janesville where she has since made her home. She was a faithful member of the Baptist church and of the American Rebekah Lodge No. 126 of this city.
Mrs. Nott is survived by two children, Albert of Janesville, and Charles H. of San Francisco. Other relatives who survive her are; one sister, Mrs. Frank H. Beswick of Madison, and a brother Frank A. Shafer of Chicago.
The funeral wervices will be held from the First Baptist Church in this city on Friday afternoon at two o'clock, the Reverend Raymond G. Pierson will officiate. Interment will be in the Oak Hill receiving vault.
Janesville DAily GAzette--Wed. Jan. 10, 1917.

Am exploring some family lore:

"On an English ship that sailed to America there was a young couple and their last name was Nott (or Knott). They were Irish. The girl was pregnant and her husband died at sea. Her child was born at sea. After landing an English man on the ship surname Weeden married her, and raised the Nott son as his own. "

This son is my gggg-gf James Weeden Sr. He was born in 1760.

James' sons censuses state that their father was born in England, another one says in Scotland, another one says RI, another says "Atlantic Ocean."

Would love to hear from anyone who recognizes this story.

S. died, Cora married Frank Morris and they had 5 children. Cora was born 17 May 1870 in Ohio and she died 2 Jun 1918 in Connersville, Indiana. He lived with my great grandfather Walter Lindsey Nutter and his wife (Luther's daughter) Ada (Nott) Nutter in Jefferson County Nebraska. He died there and is buried in an unmarked grave in Steel City Nebraska. I believe Luther's 2nd wife was Lucretia Stacia married in 1883.
Nellie Mae Nott of OH and IN

Hi,

I am having a hard time finding any further information on my Nott family and I am hoping someone can help me. Here is what I know...My Great Grandmother was born Nellie Mae Nott, her married names were Sears and Wilkinson. Nellie was born in Cincinnati in 1892. Her mother was Cora Nott and according to a 1910 census, Nellie and her husband, my Great Grandfather Forester Sear (Actual Spelling was Sears) born in 1890, were living with Cora Nott age 39 in 1910. A Theodore Nott - listed as son, was Living in the household but no age is listed for Theodore. I do know that Nellie's Father was listed on Nellie's Death Certificate as Sherman Nott and I believe he was born in Indiana and Nellie's mother's maiden name was Cora Thompson. If anyone has any information of my Nott family I would love to hear from you!

E. Vernon Nott published four volumes of poetry in London between 1903 and 1906 (one of his poems was called "Japan"), and he married my great-grandmother Laura Wethered (her second marriage) in 1906 at Fulham Registry Office. I have no idea where they went after that, or if they had children.
Thank you in advance for any help, however small.
Best wishes, Keith Sherwood, living in Cambridge, England.

James Madison Nott is my great grandfather. My grandfather was William E. Nott who married Mildred Annie Harris. They had four sons: William James, Donald Alan, Raymond Lloyd and Richard Edward (my father). My uncle has been doing extensive research. I'm sure he would be interested in any information you have as well. Please feel free to e-mail me.

JOANNA NOTT, Pitminster area, Somerset, England

I'm having no success whatsoever in tracing the parentage of my GGG Grandmother, Joanna (Joan) NOTT. The information I have to date is that she was born around 1790 in Pitminster, Somerset, and married Daniel JENNINGS in 1816 at Pitminster. One of the problems, I think is that this area of the Blackdown Hills is on the border between Somerset and Devon, and it's quite possible that Joanna's family came from the Devon area.

Does sks have some insight into this long-running enigma, as I'm beginning to think she was dumped here by aliens!

Hi all, I am also a researcher but not in this family. I wanted to let everyone know that I recently found a photo at an antique store in Findlay, OH of a young woman by the name of "Miss Alice Nott". It is signed and dated on the back as being taken Sept. 20, 1906. The picture was taken by Overton Studios in Fosoria, OH. If anyone is related to this woman and would like to purchase this picture, please email me at pmhosser@aol.com. I am only asking to be reimbursed for the purchase price of $15.00 plus shipping. Also, if anyone out there lives in North or South Carolina and enjoys browsing antique shops, I would love to purchase any old photos of Nix's , Nichols, Ables or Coles. These are my line and they all started in the South. Thanks a bunch. Peggy Nix-Montgomery

Steward Nott

I am trying to find the parents of Steward Nott of either Washington County or Morgan County, Ohio.
Steward Nott was married to Phoebe Kent and had at least two sons, Messena B. and Tiffin. Mesena was born 6/19/1839 and Tiffin was born in Washington County July 1, 1833. The family moved to Fulton County, Illinois in 1841. Steward had some connection to Thaddeus Nott, son of Samuel Griffith Nott (born in NH., 1788) in turn the son of Thomas Nott, married to Abigail Freeman. Thomas was from Ledburgy, Herfordshire, England and was born approx. 1749.
Thaddeus Nott and Steward came from Ohio to Illinois at the same time and both were married to Kents, Thaddeus to Celeste Kent.
