I've found an old message re: Michael Nowlin from Rhonda Marquess dated Aug 1998, which I now realize fits into my family tree. I'd like further information about Michael Nowlin b.c. 1740 in Ireland and his ancestors/descendants. He married Nancy Vaughn in 1768 and then emigrated to NY. I seem to be descended from 2 of his sons, William b. 1768 and James b.c. 1775. William's granddaughter Sarah married James's son Michael. Does anyone know where they came from in Ireland? I'd also like any information on Nancy Vaughn.

David Nowlin of MS 1813-1874

David was my 2nd ggfather, married to Martha (Unknown). I have learned a lot about David over the last year, but am missing critical info concerning his father and mother. I know he was born in TN and lived most of his life in MS, buried, Shady Grove Cemetery, Walthal, MS. One census finds what apprears to be him living adjacent to Bryant W. Nowlin in Bedford, TN. However, he is not listed as one of Bryant W.'s children in Trees I see on line. There is a David but not my David. His placement in MS 1860, 1870 is clear. I have traced all his children save two who I still can't find. And, who was Martha, born AL and 8 yrs his junior? Any cousins got info? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, John Nowlin, in Dallas

Thanks to the help of many others, I have connected my Nowlin family tree back to Hamilton County, TN. Does anyone know if there are still any Nowlins living there who are descended from James or Peter Nowlin of NC? I would like to get in touch with my Nowlin relatives there. I have heard that there is a family bible which links my ancestor Archibald Anderson Nowlin to James Nowlin and his father David, and I (along with others) would very much like a xerox of that page.

Thanks,

Josh

I am looking for a Needle in a Haystack. My Grandmother was Sarah Katherine Nowlin, She married my Grandfather John Floyd Rhodes in Arkansas . They had 5 kids and moved to Texas and died in Texas. All that I know about her is that she was adopted from one family member to another . I think her mother gave her to her Uncle to be raised. He was a lineman for ther railroad . I was told that she lived in Arkansas when she met and married my Grandfather. Sarah died in Kilgore Texas in 1981.

I am African American and am from Campbell County, Virginia. My dad's name is Roosevelt Walter Nowlin, Jr, and his grandfather was Bryant Walter Nowlin, born on April 15, 1861 (some say in Tennessee or Texas) and married Willie A. Withers on November 23, 1885. Bryant had a brother named Fletcher who married "Clara" and lived in New York; another brother John (who moved to either South Dakota or New York) has several children - Virginia, Clara, Elsie, Robert and John Jr.; a sister, Virginia ("Ginny" or "Jenny") who married a Conner and lived in NY, and a brother William H. Nowlin who was born on September 17, 1863. ***The birthdates of Bryant W. and William H. were recorded in our family Bible by my great grandmother.*** If you can help with any information regarding these individuals, please contact me.

James and Cornelia Nowlin had 4 children we know of - Hopkins Nowlin, b. abt. 1848, VA, Bettie Nowlin, b. abt. 1850, VA, and 2 other daus. who died when young. The Nowlin family were close friends to the Taliaferro family. Before leaving VA, a Tazewell Taliaferro married a Mildred Nowlin in 1852. They were from Franklin CO, VA and also settled in Grimes CO. I am wondering if this Mildred (Millie) Nowlin could have been a sister to Dr. James Nowlin. Would appreciate sharing with those interested.
Julia

James and Ursula Nowlin had a daughter named Sarah/Sally who married my 5th great grandpa Joseph Willis. I have a few of their children and their descendants--soem of them seem to have spread out to West VA and Tennesee. Any ideas or sources? Nowlin
Raymond L. Nowlin, 75, beloved husband of Jennie (nee Galilei), and loving father of Maureen Federico, of Hammonton, and Janice Lawless, of Mays Landing, died Friday, April 20, at Wm. B. Kessler Memorial Hospital in Hammonton, after a long illness.
Born in Danville, Va., Nowlin was a veteran of both WWII and the Korean Conflict, where he served with honor in the U.S. Navy as Chief Gunner's Mate on destroyers and LSTs. He was an active member of the Elwood Vol. Fire Dept. since 1961. When he relinquished active firefighting duties, he remained as treasurer of the fire company until his retirement this year. The Elwood Vol. Fire Dept. recently dedicated their new fire truck to Nowlin, which bears a plaque reading, "This truck is dedicated to Ray Nowlin for years of service." Nowlin moved here from New York City with his family in 1961 and worked at Hammonton Park Clothes. He recently retired from Bally's Park Place, Atlantic City, where he worked as a slot attendant for 15 years.
Surviving him are: his wife, Jennie (nee Galilei) his daughters, Maureen Federico, of Hammonton, and Janice Lawless, of Hammonton; a brother, Billy Nowlin, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a grandson, Stephen Lawless, of Mays Landing; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends attended a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, April 23, at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Hammonton.
Burial followed at Atlantic County Veteran's Cemetery in Estell Manor.
Arrangements were made by the Marinella Funeral Home.

Hope this helps.
Bill
Obituary Central
http://www.obitcentral.com
GenealogyBuff.com
http://www.genealogybuff.com

Need help for DAR

My maiden name is Nowlin. I have one sister and my father had three brothers. None of them had sons. Therefore, the Nowlin name will not be forwarded by my family. I wanted to go into the DAR on the Nowlin name. I have reached a block with the DAR. My "Ira Nowlin ancestor born 1829 in Bedford, Tenn. )was the first born son of Benjamin Franklin Nowlin born 1802 in Greenville County, South Carolina and married to Lucinda Webb born 1806 in Greenvill County, South Carolina. This information comes from the Book, "The Nowlin-Stone Geneology, page 85. The 1850 census lists Ira as living next door to his father Benjamin Franklin Nowlin but since he was already married and age 21 he is not in the same household. I do know that his sister, Didamie (5th child of Benjamin and Lucinda) has been used as a source for DAR.
My problem is that I cannot find any other source that proves that Ira is indeed the son of Benjamin and Lucinda. And therefore two efforts to be accepted into the DAR have been rejected.
I need a family bible record that shows that Didamie and Ira are brother and sister or some bible record showing Ira as the son of Benjamin.
Please, Nowlin relatives. Help me to extablish a Nowlin line for the DAR for future descendants of this name.
Thank you for your help. Normalin Nowlin Howard

Pittsylvania Co., VA Nowlins - Bryan Hopkins and Matthew Bates

Am especially interested in any correspondence from, to, or about these two brothers of the mid-nineteenth century. Matthew Bates was an affluent intrepreneur and Hopkins was a traveling slave trader covering the territory between Franklin County, Virginia and Mobile, Alabama.

Information about them or their families would be appreciated. We have the genealogy pretty straight, looking mostly for historical data.

There was one sister named Lucy who married and moved to Akron, Ohio. Alex and Jennie lived in Covington, Va. after marriage, that took place in Richmond.
James & Urusla Nowlin

the search for the maiden name of Urusla has hit a brick wall, we all have the name of Patterson but no one seem to know where that bit of information started. So I wondered if John Whitt Nowlin is the oldest son then the naming pattern would indicate that Urusla is a Whitt not a Patterson. So I did a search of Urusla Whitt, and found a Ursilla Whitt named in will of her father John Whitt of Halifax County in 1788. There doesn't seem to be any more information on this Ursilla. I have found Whitt-Witt in Henry,Franklin County. I was wondering if any one else had researched Halifax County. I think at this stage I am trying any avenue to get over this brick wall.

FYI,

What would have been the 100th wedding anniversary of Lewis Elmer Nolan and Bertha Orpha Miller was marked by a pilgrimage of sorts to Cass Lake, Minn., by two of their grandsons. Over a three-day period we visited their graves, the location of their since-demolished home, the old Soo Line depot where L.E. worked most of his life and the Nolan Memorial Pine Grove, named for him by the town and railroad.

My account of the visit, with photos, begins at http://home.att.net/~nolantravels/00minn1.html

Cheers, Lewis Nolan, author of "Nolan-Miller Family History". A summary of the book's research is posted on a sister website at http://home.att.net/~lewis_nolan

I would like any information prior to the marriage of my ancestor, JOHN WHITT NOWLIN, born abt. 1770 in Virginia. He married on Feb 23, 1799 in Patrick County,VA to Mary (Polly)
Thomas.
John was the son of JAMES NOWLIN & URSULA who had 9 children and all were born prior to their moving to Patrick Co.,VA in the late 1700's. From a pension application made by Ursula, I believe they were married by 1770; however, I've not been able to find the place of their marriage nor the birth place/date of any of their children including JOHN W NOWLIN.
They have been found in Campbell County,Halifax Co, Henry County prior to their move to Patrick. I do believe they came from a more eastern part of Va but as yet have no proof.
Any infor. on any of these people would be appreciated,
Jane

Looking for information on a R.W. NOLEN, b 8-26-1844 d 2-17-1883. He is listed on the 1870 McNairy County, TN., census:
R.W. NOLEN, age 24-AL
Sarah NOLEN, age 17-TN (Sarah Simpkins)
J.N. NOLEN, age 23-AL
Mary NOLEN, age 17-AL (Mary Armstrong)

J.N. is also listed as J.H. (John) I believe that he is R.W. brother. I find R.W. in Ellis County, Ennis, TX in 1873 as they have 3 small children buried in a cemetery there. I find a John and Mollie Nolen in the same cemetery, and Mollie's maiden name is listed as Armstrong. I know that Mary/Mollie/Mae are all derivatives. I have a lead that R.W. and J.H. are from Franklin County, Alabama. And on the 1850 1860 census there is a NOLEN family there. It list the following:

Mother-Henry NOLAN b 1788-TN
Father-Harriet Chiles b abt 1817-Virginia
Children:
James "Jesse" Thomas NOLAN b 135-1836-AL
Virginia NOLAN b abt 1838-AL
Caroline NOLAN b abt 1840-AL
Hester H. NOLAN b abt 1843-AL
Robert W. NOLAN b abt 1845-AL
John Henry NOLEN b abt 1848-AL
Manerva F. NOLAN b abt 1850-AL
Sarah A. NOLAN b abt 1855-AL
Theodicia NOLAN b abt 1858-AL

The name has also been spelled NOLEN and NOLIN

Does this sound familar to anyone?

Becky NOLEN McKee

Daniel D Knowling, from NC?

Daniel D Knowling came to Jefferson county TN by 1830 as he is in the census at that time. Its said he came with his mother but I dont know her name. Daniel was born about 1796 and married Margaret Mcdonal/Mcdaniel/Mcdonald in Jefferson county TN. I think they lived in the Talbott area.

I cant find anything on his line and I am thinking its because of the variation on the spelling of the Knowling name.
Daniel had a son named James Porter Knowling who married Sarah Amanda Givens/Gibbons in jeff county TN. I would say that all the Knowlings in Jeff county come from Daniel D Knowling. Can anyone point me in a direction in NC to find any leads on ANYONE with this last name and the different spellings? Any info would be wonderful.

Tracy Estepp
Born in Jeff county TN

James Nowlin - Martha Collins descendents

Pioneer Families of Missouri
Bryan & Rose, 1876
Montgomery County, Mo

NOWLIN.-- James Nowlin and his wife, Martha Collins, were natives of Scotland. They came to America prior to the revolution, and brought all their household and kitchen furniture with them. They settled first in the eastern part of Virginia, but afterward removed to Pittsylvania county. Their only son, Bryan W. Nowlin, was a Captain in the American army during the revolution. He married Lucy Waide, of Virginia, and they had fifteen children, thirteen of whom lived to be grown, and twelve of them married. The eldest son, Peyton, married Lucy Townsend, and settled first in Kentucky, from whence he removed to Saline county, Mo., previous to 1820, and raised a large family of children. Richard Nowlin, brother of Peyton, married Celie Shelton, and settled first in Kentucky, and afterward in Saline county, Missouri. Samuel Nowlin married Fannie Paul, of Virginia, by whom he had Joseph and David. His first wife died, and he was married the second time to Elizabeth Everson, by whom he had two daughters, both of whom are living in Virginia. Joseph Nowlin lived and died in Lynchburg, Va. David studied law at the University of Virginia. In 1835 he married Elizabeth Berger, of Virginia, and the following year he came to Missouri and settled in Montgomery county, where he practiced his profession, and was elected to several official positions in the county, which he filled with credit to himself and his constituents. He was also a Baptist preacher, and possessed more than ordinary powers as a pulpit orator. His son, Samuel S. Nowlin, is an attorney, and lives at Montgomery City. He has served his county as Circuit Clerk, and made one of the best officers the county ever had. He possesses a large influence, and his prospects for future political advancement are good.
