Hello Dale,
Well I hope I can help you, however my Pierre went to Guernsey not Jersey. He was convicted there of forgery of coins and sentenced to 7 years transported to Australia in 1735. I have traced his family with the services of a French Geneologist and have a copy of his baptism in Sauxemesnil in Normandy. That was really exciting for me I can tell you. You can email me on theantau@yahoo.com.au and I can sort something out for you. I must say the Poidevins look similar.
Please contact me
Cheers Ina Peacock

Hi;
I just read your message and would like to know more about Pierre Le Poidevin. I met a relative of yours in Coff's Harbour, Henry Poidevin, and he sure looked like my Dad! We were visiting from Canada. I have traced my Poidevin family to Jersey, but hit a wall there. Do you know of any siblings of Pierre Le Poidevin?

Dale Hay
nee Poidevin

Guernsey NOYON family in France

I've just finished reading the messages here related to the Guernsey NOYONs, and I have some details that relate to a number of the messages, so I have started this new thread.

I am Guernsey born, though now living in France, and I am a direct descendant of a Francois Noyon born in Bretteville, France on 4 April 1801. This particular Francois was still living in Guernsey for the 1841 census, so I assume is not the one transported to Australia. I am currently researching French birth, marriage and death records that recently came online for the Manche department (which includes Bretteville) and have located a number of family records going back to the mid 1700s, though I have much more research to do and have not confirmed all of the details yet. The French records are free, and you can find them at

http://recherche.archives.manche.fr/?id=recherche_archives

Go to the Etat Civil tab, and select Bretteville-en-Saire as the lieu if you are interested. If anyone wants the names of documents and page references where I have found images of the original certificates, let me know, either here or at andy@forit.com

One thing I did discover is that there is a hamlet near Brettevile, Hameau Noyon, where members of the family lived in the early 1800s. If you go to Google, and search for Hameau Nogoa, you will find it, though Google has named it incorrectly. Google street view at the end of that road does show the sign 'Hameau Noyon'

A couple of you here mentioned an article about the transportation of a Noyon to Australia. I would be interested in getting further details of that if someone could help.

Many thanks,

Andy Noyon

I wonder does anyone know of Delma Holmes who married Alfred Noyon in 1948 in Guernsey? They emigrated to Halifax Canada later that same year, but I have no idea what happened to them next, if they stayed in Canada or had children.

Delma is an ancestor of mine.

Hi,

I don't know how this links with your Noyons, but in tracing my Brooks relatives in Guernsey, I have discovered that Edward Craddick Brooks married an Emily Mary Noyon in 1891. Emily appears to have been born around 1861 in The Vale, and was the daughter of Charles Noyon. As far as I can see, Charles' father was Francois Noyon borb in France somewhere around 1800.
Edward and his family subsequently emigrated to Canada in 1910.
Regards,
Brian Brooks

Hi Brenda,
Regarding Francois Noyon, trust me birthdates never quite match up, its a bit of hoping for the best. On a serious note I was trying to find out what happened to Francois after he was transported to Australia. He and my ggg grandfather travelled out on the ship "Elizabeth 2" berthed in Sydney December 1835.
I am also trying to find a father and mother for my Pierre who was really distrustful, wanted in France for something, and in Guernsey called "that Frenchman". I have a suspicion that parents are Pierre and maybe a Rachel or Margaret. Any ideas?
Kind Regards,
Ina Peacock
NSW Australia.

Thank you for reply. Yes this is the Francois. Beauregard is a street in St Peter Port. Have the Guernsey Court Case type out, a few gaps, as the newspaper report from our Priaulx Library is a bit faded. Am trying to see if this Francois is 'our' Noyon but birth dates do not tie up completely. We have Le Poidevin's in the family tree as well.
Maybe we can exchange dates etc. Thanks and regards. Brenda Noyon (nee Horsepool). Guernsey

There was a Francois born c1799 in Bredeville, near Cherbourg France. He live in Guernsey near the Beauregard @ St Peter Port. This person was transported with my ancestor (Pierre le Poidevin) to Aus, for the crime of base coin (forgery). Dont know if this is one you are looking for but if it is I have part of his court case as reported in a paper of the day.
Hoping its good luck for you.
Cheers
Ina Peacock

Hello Brenda

I happened upon your reply to my old posting concerning Mary Stephania Noyon.

Her son Harold Bowditch Legg immigrated to Canada around 1904 and he is my grandfather. He had two children, my mother Dorothy Rubina Legg and my Uncle Stanley.

Two of Harold's brothers also immigrated to Canada and their names were Percival and Octavius. Neither married nor had any children.

If I remember the stories correctly, I believe that my grandfather's oldest brother immigrated to Australia. I assume that this was Nelson Charles Ozanne Legg.

I also believe that there was another sister by the name of Zelia.

It is interesting that you mention the name Stabb. When I was a kid back in 1976 my mother, father and I visited Guernsey. The woman that we stayed with was Jean Stabb. Her husband (who had recently died) was Rubina's son.

Since this time my mother has passed away and my personal connections with Guernsey have disappeared.

Thank you for contacting me. I will try to be more diligent in looking at the message board.

Heather Suttie
