My husband's name was William M. Nuckols from around Southern and Central Virginia. However, William Nuckles (great-granddad) was born 1831 Botetourt County (?), Virginia and died 1865 Rockbridge County, Virginia. I can't past William Nuckles. I would like to find out his parents names and where they were born and died. Thank you very much.

Sorry, I assumed that the year 2007 would be implied. It is next Saturday, June 2, 2007 which is the Confederate Memorial Day. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. MexicoSam

James Wesley Nuchols (1844-1906)

Memorial to honor Confederate cavalryman James Wesley Nuchols

Maryville, Tenn.- A local Civil War cavalryman will be recognized with a memorial service and the dedication of a soldier’s monument at Maryville, Tenn., at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2. . Great-great-grandson, Wesley R. Burnette, and Wayne M. Sampson who are members of the Col. Elijah Gates Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), Fulton, Mo., will honor James Wesley Nuchols (1844-1906), at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, 3736 Tuckaleechee Pike, Maryville.

James Wesley Nuchols was the great grandson of Silvester Nuchols. Both Silvester and his son, Thomas, settled in the Crooked Creek area, near Hubbard, about 1812. Thomas had a large family, six sons and five daughters. James Wesley was the son of Richard A. Nuchols, who was the eldest son of Thomas Nuchols. Most of the Nuchols' who live in Blount County and eastern Tennessee today are descended from these eleven children.

Simple but colorful pageantry will include a fired salute and a historical eulogy to Nuchols, who was a private in Co. K of McKenzie’s 5th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment of the Confederate Army. Wesley Burnette and Wayne Sampson are also Associate Members of the Longstreet-Zollicoffer Camp of Knoxville.

All descendents of Silvester Nuchols and their extended families, their friends and members of the SCV are invited to attend. For family, it may be a special opportunity to meet unknown cousins and distant relatives. Those who may need to be seated are encouraged to bring a folding chair.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) is not affiliated with any other organization. The SCV is a historical, patriotic and non-political organization dedicated to insuring that the true history of the South is presented and taught to future generations.

Her full name was Geneva Edith Walker and she was married to James Richard Nuchols. His father was James Wesley Nuchols and mother was Elizabeth Hubbell Williams. He was born in Blount County. I hope that helps a bit. Also, I was told we had a Cherokee Indian woman relative. Maybe you could clarify this as well? Thanks for all of your help. I really appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Emily Nuchols

The Society has over 50 John Nuchols in our database ranging from born 1670 to 1970....
Please help us establish this connection.....Johns DOB, his parents and his grandparents..... is a good place to begin. We would love to get the Walker sisters story into our newsletter

Hello all! I'm from the Spokane Nuchols clan and have just moved to Asheville, North Carolina. I will be working here with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for about a year. I just wanted to extend a greeting from your western relatives and I also had a question about Edith Walker, who was married to John Nuchols. I've heard that she was related to the famous Walker sisters and would like to find out if this is true. I'll be doing a lot of work in the Smoky Mountains and Roan Highlands and thought it would be great to find out some family history while I'm in the area.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you guys!

Sandi, I don't know who James Gordon Nuchols is to me! I don't know his parents, or anything else about him. All I have is the obit from the Knoxville News Sentinel. The May 16, 1999 issue stated he lived in Lake City, Tennessee, and that he worked for 16 years with Air Products in Cleveland, Ohio, and before retirement, he was a salesman for Ford Furniture Company, in Lake City. He was also a vetern of the US Air Force. It gave no relatives, place of burial, or funeral home. It stated that the arrangement would be later. Since I am researching all persons with the NUCHOLS spelling, then I am trying to find out about him. This is all I know.

It is hard to find the descendants without dates. You did not say if James was born in the 1700's, 1800's, 1900's??

I can help you if you give me his date of birth and his parents names and his grandparents names. Most NUCHOLS in Tennesseee are from Silvester Nuchols who came to Blount County Tenn from North Carolina. The Nuckolls Society has never found his connection to the immigrant ancestor, James Nuckolls yet.

As soon as you can give me some dates, names and locations, I will be happy to help.

Sarah Ann Hudson was my grandfather's sister; I don't know anything about B.J. Nuchols except the little information I've found on census records. The 1900 Noxubee County (Brooksville), MS, census shows J.S. Nuckols, age 60, born in Tennessee, living with his wife, Matilda, age 59, born in Tennessee, with their son, Bob, age 22, born in Mississippi. (Matilda is shown with 6 children, 3 living.) I haven't found him in the 1910 census, but in 1920 B.J. Nuckols, age 42, born in Mississippi, was living with his wife, Anne, age 42, born in Louisiana, and their three children, Frances, 15, Joe, 13, and Ethel, 12. I have a photograph of their three children; in it, the oldest appears to be maybe 8 or 9.

Now that you are probably sick of me. I just never give up. I am almost sure beyond a shadow of a doubt I found this family. But only if you can be SURE William is a brother of Martin. Martin is a son of Calvin Nuckles and Hester Ann Graham.

Look here: (remeber ages in the census are not always exact, but usually pretty close.)

1880 Tazewell Co. Maiden Springs
Martin age 23
Sister Jane 20
Sister Lou 23
Brother William 16

next door
John C age 34 wife and child Andrew

I could not find Calvin in 1870, but I have not given up.

1860 Tazewell Co, Cedar Bluff, VA
Calvin Nuckles children"
John age 15 (see John above)
Martin 5 (see Martin above)
Louisa age 3 (See sister Lou above)
Jane born 1860 after census enumerated age 20
and William born after 1860

What do you think. I think it is self evident!!!
I believe that the 1869 is a mistake because if you look, it lists his age as 36 which would better match up with the brother of Martin and would make his birth year 1864 or earlier. I could have been misreading it, It looks like 1869, but it could say 1864 and the 4 just looks like a 9.
The marriage record lists that William Nuchols parents are Calvin and Hester A. Nuchols

I really have to ask another question Your census records say William was born 7-1869. That does not match the brother of Martin in Tazewell Co, 1880 Census.( b c 1863) However it does match closer to William, s/o James H Nuckles in Tazewell Co, Clear Fork, VA You have documentation that your William is the brother of martin?

He is the right age to be the father of William b 1866, Martin b 1857, Jane b 1860, Lou born 1862 and John C b 1846, but the children are missing in 1870.
My only excuse is that I am trying to keep you on your toes. LOL. You are so right about the 1910 census showing children. I really overlooked that!. I dont want to discount your great aunt, but if they had children, at least some would be in the 1900 census, dont you agree? the oldest would only be 12. I have found some of my older ancestors memories to be not so good, but you never know. I WOULD however believe they had at least one. But unfortunatley you only have the census to rely on and it shows no children. The only other alternative is to go to Tazewell County and check the birth records for 1888-1910. I sure wish I could help more. I will keep this info on file with the Society in hopes of a connection.

Sandi

The 1900 Tazewell Co., VA census Enumeration District 103 Maiden Springs Page 8A dwelling 128, Family 129 Shows:

Knuckles, William Head W, M, July 1869, age 36, married 13 yrs
Barbarra E. Wife W, F, ---- 1866, age 34, married 13 years, 7 children, 6 children living.

The 1910 Tazewell Co., VA census Enumeration District 103 page 8A visit number 118 shows:

Nuckles, William Head, M, W, age 46, M1, married 21yrs
Barbara Wife, F, W, age 44, M1, Married 21yrs, 1 child, 1 child living.
The 1910 census does show number of children in columns 10 and 11 unless I am misreading what it says. I know the big heading for these two columns appears to say "Mother of how many children" I can't read what the subheadings are for the individual columns, but by going by what is listed next to other womens' names it appears as if it is the same as the 1900 census and is a listing of the number of children the woman had and the number of children that are still living.

The 1920 Tazewell Co., VA census Maiden Springs Enumeration District 141, page 6A at the bottom of house number 86 is:
Nuckolls, William Hired Man, M, W, 55, WD
There is a note in the margin which makes it appear as if he is suppose to be listed with another family. This note is hard to read, however, I do know that the first family listed on this page would be (Barbara's step brother's family) not sure if he was living in that household or not.
I am not his and Barbara's direct descendant. I am a descendant of Barbara's brother, Edward Lambert. I am trying to find William and Barbara's children and their descendants because my great aunt, who is still living remembers them having children, but can't remember their names. I would also like to see if those descendants might have information that I am missing on other siblings of Barbara and Edward's. Thanks for your help!

The reason I asked for the page number, is that I have all of the Nuckles, (and other spellings) in Virginia for 1900 transcribed and I dont see him on my list. I could check the actual census if I had the page number. I have found the children to be in error many times. Also, if married in 1886, it is possible to have 7 children by 1900, but none would be out of the house by then. Do you descend from one of their children? If first child born 1888, they would ony be 12 by 1900. The 1920 census does not give number of children , the 1900 was the one and only.

Sandi,
I don't have the census records in front of me, and I don't remember the page number. However, on the 1900 Census Record in the Maiden Springs District he is listed with his wife Barbara (her maiden name was Lambert) and it states on that census record that she had 7 children with 6 living, but there are not any children actually listed living with them. Then on the 1910 Census William and Barbara are listed, but on this census it says that she had 1 child (if I remember correctly) and again there is not any children living with them. Now, since the marriage register states that they married in 1886, I could see where in 1910 they might not have any children living with them because they could all be adults. However in the 1900 census they should have had children in the house with them.
Of course if 16 in 1880, then there are no census records for 1890, so 1900 is your first choice, and the children should be there. What was his wifes name and chldrens names?

You may want to check other spellings. After Nuckolls research for 25 years, I have found the errors in Nuckolls spellings to have only a 25%accuracy. Most of the Nuchols came from NC. In Tazewell Co, the prevailnat spelling was NUCKLES. In 1880 there was a William G Nuckles married to a Florence. (she might have died). There was a William Nuckles age 16 in 1880 living with his brother Martin Nuckles. Good Luck
sandi Evilsizer3@aol.com
