Alexander Nummy III, born 1831, Ireland

Hoping to find more ancestors! Henderson Nummy's, my grandfather's, father was Alexander Nummy III. The only information I have on him is born 1831 in Ireland to Benjamine Nummy and Sarah MacKnight Nummy. Supposedly, Benjamine Nummy's father was Alexander Nummy (maybe Jr.) and was born in 1776. Henderson Nummy's mother was Mary Catherine Raiford whose parents were Phillip B. Raiford and Aspilla Ann Raiford Raiford. I don't know if they were from Ireland or not. If you have any knowledge of these families & their ancestors, I'd love to hear from you!
I sent off for John A. (Aloysius) Nummey's birth certificate, his father is listed as William Thomas Nummey and his mother is Mary Hurley both birthplaces listed as Ireland. John A. was born is Brooklyn NY. Age listed as 54 years old, died on June 26, 1930. John was a licensed plumber who was a residence manager at 927 Fifth Ave. Manhattan. If you look in the census you will find some interesting tenants.

Now the question becomes why the middle initial is a J. and not T. for Thomas. Not sure why I ask in 2002 for a William J. Nummey.

I have heard my grandmother mention Co. Cork, but not many details. Only that some were Catholic and some were Protestant

Also, family "lore" from the Samuel Nummey side says that William changed his name TO Nummey FROM Murphy/Murray. Sorry I have to check records. Never checked this out because I wasn't sure where to start. Anyway there may be a name change somewhere. Great huh.

Thomas Nummey was a Catholic priest in New York.

Whew, luckily we've connected--didn't think the chances were good since your post was quite old.

I, too, have had a bit of difficulty following the Nummey family, and determining their birth years. For example, the 1910 US Census says William was 66 which puts his birth year abt 1834, and Mary was 57 then, putting her birth year abt 1843. However, the 1900 US Census lists his birth mo/yr as May 1846 (off by 12 years from the 1910 census!) and hers as Aug 1855 (again, off by 12 yrs) so I don't know what was going on there. The 1892 NY State Census lists his age in that year as 42 (birth year would be 1850) and hers as 35 (birth year would be 1857), neither of which "jives" with either of the US Censuses data. So, was William born in 1834, 1846, or 1850?

He supposedly immigrated in 1863 but I couldn't find him in any ship manifests, though I was only searching the port of NY, and maybe that was a mistake. Since I didn't know her maiden name, I couldn't search for her immigration papers. I was trying to see if they, by chance came from a part of Ireland that is close to where my relatives, the Sullivans, came from in Co. Cork. Let me back up...

I'm searching Nellie Sullivan, and hence, the Nummeys, because I think she might be Helen E. Sullivan, supposedly born in Hudson, NY in 1892, (according to her military papers--she served as a nurse in WWI). Helen would be the niece of my GG grandmother Elllen Sullivan. Since Nellie is the niece of one of the Nummeys (either John or Mary), I'm wondering if one of them is related to my GG Grandmother Ellen, and, hence, to me.

Carol Hokana

Hello Carol,
Wow, you are right, it has been a long time.It was only by chance I got your response, since I have changed e-mail accounts, this notice ended up in the junk e-mail folder. John A. Nummey is my great grandfather, Im not sure about Nellie, but I will check my notes. The only info I can remember off hand is what you have already mentioned. I have tried to follow the Nummeys back without much success. However due to more records being available on-line I have found William J, Nummey in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle Newspaper. It has been digitized and is now an online database of old articles/advert/announcements for the newspaper. I searched for the Nummey's but not Nellie Sullivan. Might want to try eagle.brooklynpubliclibrary.org . I'll check around to see what I can find in my notes. Keep in touch.
Laura Smith

Although your message is now quite old, I'm responding to it in the hopes of securing more information about William J. Nummey, his wife, Mary, and some of their children: John A., Samuel, Thomas, and Nellie. They all lived in Brooklyn, NY c 1890-1910 at the least, likely longer.

For a while, their niece Nellie Sullivan lived with them, who may or may not be related to me. I'm researching this family to see what I can find out about Nellie and how she is related to the Nummey family (and whether I, too, am related to the Nummeys).

Thank you,
Carol Hokana
Dear Teresa,
I recently saw your letter to Al O'brian on the ancestry bulletin board (Jun 02). I am a decent of William Nummey (b. abt 1846, in Ireland). He married a Mary Hurley. I have not seen too many Nummey's since I had started this 10 years ago. I know this is an old message, but I thought I'd see if you were still researching the Nummey tree.
Suzanne -

According to the 1880 Census of Population, there are several Stines Families from Ireland. There is one Stinces Family in 1880 in Arlington, Massachusetts.

Go to Ancestry.com. Put in the last name. there are about 27 pages of Stines by looking only for those born in Ireland, you should be able to locate your antecedents.

My Great-Grandmother was Ella Stines McGinity. She is in the Census as the daughter of Martin Stines of Ulster, New York.

Please contact if I can help you any further

Tom McGinity

Whatever the reason, you have certainly been a blessing to me! Thank you again!

Teresa.
The reason I have the seven volumes of THE FAMINE IMMIGRANTS
is that my mother often mentioned all the information about her family's arrival in the United States at New York. She knew the date, the ship name, the pier number, etc. Guess what? No one was then interested enough to write it down.
So when these books became available I had to buy them for I felt I would be able to find my Hennessys. Thankfully they were there, however, the name given was Hensey.
In the last ten years or so, I had an ad in the GENEALOGICAL
HELPER when I did lookups for $2.00 a name. It was a labor of love, certainly not for profit. Now that I have a computer, I'm continuing doing lookups and the rewards are sucesses such as this one. At least I assume that these people are two that are part of your Nummeys. I'd like to hear the details.
Good Luck.

Teresa,
Your going to love this, I think. On page 167, Vol. VI of THE FAMINE IMMIGRANTS is the passenger list of the ship PRINCETON which arrived at New York on August 14, 1850, from Liverpool. Listed are;
Alexander Nummey (20) (Carpenter)
Elizabeth Nummey (22) (Wife)
They are the only two Nummeys in the seven volume set which covers over 1/2 million Irish arriving at New York between 1846-1850.
I hope this helps.
