Another Nunez looking for answers

I have been able to trace my lineage back to Juan Nunez Maldonado but am unable to find anything beyond him. He was born somewhere between 1890 and 1900 and was married to a Norberta Santos. They had several children, Luis, Roberto, Carmen, Jose Juan andmy grandfather, Jose Nunez Santos (these arent all of them). The family hails from Puerto Rico for as far back as I can get so I anticipate that it will continue to find origins there.

Can anyone be of any help to me? My name is Joe Nunez and my grandpa was the first to move to New York and my Mom was the first generation of our family born in the Continental United States. Her name is Elizabeth Nunez Rivera, born to Jose Nunez Santos and Sara Rivera Velez.

Any help would be appreciated. Perhaps we are cousins and dont even know it!

Thanks

Joe

I might be your cousin. My father comes from huge family. He is from Valpariso, Zacatecas. His name is Manuel R. Nunez. He has a brother name Fidel, sister Maria, mother Guadalupe, father Maxumino (can't spell it). His sister Maria moved to Jalisco, Guadajalara. Your father might be my grandfather Maxumino's brother. I will find out more from my dad's first cousin Jose Nunez. If your family has blue, green or gray eyes...then you are more likely my cousin. Every of one my relatives has those eye colors. So is my grandfather's brothers & sisters. I'll get back at you as soon I hear from Jose. Thanks!

Hello!
My grandfather's name was Leonardo Nunez, he passed in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico in approximately 1985. He was born in Zacatecas (I can't remember the town right now, but not too far from Jalpa, Zacatecas, where his wife was from -- Maria Jesus Anaya de Nunez)

His father's name was Marciano and had one brother (name, unsure). This brother, we believe, settled in Chicago. I'm interested in finding Nunez (Nuñez) relatives in Chicago or others from Zacatecas, Mexico or related areas.

from family stories of my youth, i think i am a decendant of dr. samuel nunez.

i think we are from cole nunez who changed his surname to eunice.

the eunice families are in ware county, mostly waycross area.

my grandfather lived and died in waycross. william henry eunice married mary jane youmans.

they had a large family, as did so many in that time, they were married in 1904.

my name is connie nunes. my husband is not from the nunez line though we joke that i went from a nunez to a eunice to a nunes.

would be glad to hear of news and offer info i have if i can learn to navigate my way through this site.

Re: Nunez Family Canary Island to Cuba 1800's

There aren't too many Nunez families in the manifest so hopefully you can find a familiar name. My ancestor on the ship was Manual Nunez (Villavicencio) and Josefa Suarez, through their son Esteban.

I have found it mostly spelled Nunez or Nunes, and a few other ways. I have a copy of some of the transcriptions from the Archdiocese of New Orleans records from the early 1800s and found it either mispelled or transcribed as Nundez, Nunies, Nugnez, and Nugnes. The first names can change too - from Spanish to French spellings. For example one of my ancestors was Juan Antonio Nunez but I see him in records as both Juan and Jean.

Depending on where they settled - the Archdiocese records are awesome because there is so much information. Baptisms listed parents, grandparents etc. It helped me link my ancestors back to the ones who came originally. The archdiocese of baton rouge also has transcribed its scacrament records and I haven't seen them myself but think they are as informative as the New Orleans ones.

Do you know they name of the ancestor who went to Cuba from the US and about when? If they came from New Orleans or St Bernard Parish I might have some records.

Worth noting - I think there was another migration from the Canary Islands to Texas before the Louisiana migration in 1778/9. I don't know much about it but I think they settled in the San Antonio Texas area.
Jeannette

My Nunez ancestors came from the Canary Islands and settled in Louisiana. I recall that some of the ships that took the people from the Canary Islands to La stopped in Cuba for awhile and some people destined for La never left Cuba.

Have you seen the book The Canary Islanders Of Louisiana by Gilbert Din. It is available on amazon.com. It is interesting - covers how they came, the voyages, including how some ships tarried in Cuba, settling etc. The ships manifests are listed in the book. You can also find the manifests on line at www.canaryislanders.org.

I work with a lady who was born in Cuba and we always joke we are "cousins" because her Nunez ancestors also came from the Canary Islands somehow.

Good luck!
