Robert Franklin Nunley, b. 1849

I am looking for information about my gggrandfather. His name was Robert Franklin Nunley, and he was born 26 July 1849. He married Martha Jane Clay in Lawrence County, KY in 1880. He died 6 July 1925. Their children were: Louise (Lulu), John, Mary Frances, Charles, Benjamin, Ernest, Algie, Lorenza, Ralph, and Robert Bart.

His father and mother were William Nunley (b. 15 July 1815, d. 1872) and Elizabeth Mutters. They were married 8 July 1843 in Burlington, OH. Their children were: John, Lewis, Ibby, Robert Franklin, William, Alexander (Hart), Nancy, Isaac, and Elizabeth (Lizzie).

Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

After 31 years and half of my life I am

still looking for my GG-grandpa Walter NUNNELEE born abt 1795 in Wilkes Co GA : he was a lawyer and a teacher
and
still looking for his children William, John, Mary and the unknown older daughter all born in the 1840's in Alabama.
Uncle John was in the CSA with his cousins and disappeared after his discharge.

I would be overjoyed to compare notes and share information with anyone who had a NUNNELEE (or any other spelling) from Macon or possibly Lee counties Alabama before 1870.

Nobody else is researching "us" or if they are I don't think they've made the kinnection to my GG-grandparents Walter NUNNELEE and Caroline [GRESHAM] in Georgia or Alabama

I'm pretty certain it's up to me to find them or they will just be lost to history.

So, if you think there is the slightest chance your Walter, John, William, or Mary might be my lost loved ones please, please, please email me !!! I will jump in there and do anything and everything to prove or disprove them no matter how long it takes or what it costs.

I really just need to vent.
I've been researching my family trees for many many years. I stick with FACT. I feel the need to document each and every FACT that I put into my data. ( my family tree)
I have not and will not publish my records until I am sure that the information I put out for the world to see is TRUTH. So, I guess the reason for my rant is that I have found NUMEROUS family trees listed here on Ancestry and other places with FALSE information and they have my GGGrandparents listed with FALSE information. One has my ggrandfather's parents listed as someone other than who they actually are. ( I have the wills.) Some have my ggggrandfather listed with children that ARE NOT HIS. UGH. It's annoying.
And the REALLY annoying problem is these trees that I'm mentioning? There is not a way to tell the folks that their info is wrong. I've emailed. I've emailed and emailed. Some of the emails are no longer valid. A couple folks seemed to have posted Nunley information and just disappeared from Ancestry.
sigh.
Does anyone else have this problem? How do you handle it?
It's starting to really really bother me.
These are PEOPLE. With Children. These are our blood. Do we not owe them to take the time to document the true facts of their lives and not just breeze through with maybes?

My great grandfather was Jonathan Nunley, born about 1765 in
North Carolina, later moving to Alabama, then to Mississippi. I am trying to verify whether Thomas Nunley
born about 1744 was his father. Several family trees show that he is, while others show that a John Nunley born in 1765 is the son of Thomas Nunley. I obtained a copy of a photo of my Jonathan born in 1795 (from another tree) and he has very striking Native American features.
I've seen on some of the posts, that Thomas Nunley married a Cherokee Indian named Margaret or Elizabeth. I also saw someone by the name of Obediah Nunley that may possibly be his father as well. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks,

Mysteries of William B. Nunley 1801-1889

Maybe someone knows how to answer these mysteries.

William B. Nunley was married to Sara(h) Jane Smartt and they had many kids. Sara died in 1866, and William remarried my 2ggrandmother Margaret Arrick (Should be Orrick) (maiden name QUALLS) in 1887 Grundy Co TN.

Margaret was widow of John Orrick (pronounced Ark, spelled Arrick) who died fighting for the south at Shiloh leaving 6 kids. Eye-witness account in pension app-see below.

Mystery #1
In the 1870 Grundy census, Margaret (Peggy) and kids are shown as ARKE, along with a William Jones. Is this William B. Nunley? No researcher has been able to find him in 1870.

Mystery #2
In the 1880 Coffee census (same location as Grundy in 1870), Margaret and kids are shown as ARRICK, no William. Where is he again?
Why did Margaret continue to use 'Arrick' and not Nunley.
Because William was a Union man maybe, or to honor John?

Mystery #3
In 1868 a daughter Fannie Arrick was born, Apparently by William B. Nunley. But Fannie's death cert in 1938 says father is John Nonley. A simple mistake, or a scandal?

Margaret applied for pension against William's UNION service and here is the app including William's discharge papers:

Margaret had to go to great lengths to prove she was married to Nunley, possibly because of her use of Arrick. In the app is affidavits from a lot of people stating they were never divorced, even one from William's side of the family.

William is buried in the Nunley Cemetery along with Jesse and others. Apparently Sara is buried there but no marker, and even her father Reuben. Pictures were just put up on Find-a-grave.com.

Where is Margaret Arrick/Nunley buried?

Anyone have old records showing who was buried in the Nunley Cemetery?

Sally Nunley married Rueben Smart Warren Co. TN.??????

Does anyone know anything about Sally Nunley could have been born North Carolina. Rueben lived in or near Nunley Cove in Warren Co.TN. I was told she was an Indian and no one knew her real name.They would have lived in that area from 1812 till thier deaths. Rueben Smart is my GGGgrandfather. Any info would help THANKS.

Does anyone have any ancestral information on May or Mary Nunley? She was living with my 3rd great-grandmother, Mary (nee Gorman) Alexander in Carter County, Kentucky, at the time of both the 1850 and 1860 Censuses.

I don't know if she's a relative or just living with Mary and her family. I don't know whether or not her sister-in-law, Betsy Alexander, was married. If she was, May or Mary Nunley could be a niece.

Nancy [WHITLOCK] married Thomas NUNLEY 23 Jun 1872 in Colbert Co, Alabama. Nancy was the daughter of Hezekiah WHITLOCK and Matilda [GOFF] of Franklin and Colbert counties, AL.

Thomas signed his name "NUNLEE" on his CSA papers and his sons by his 1st marriage to Charlotte [PAINE] used that spelling also.

My cousin Jane thinks Thomas and Nancy could be her Great- grandparents: she has spent years and years trying to find either or both of them on the 1880 and 1900 census but has found no trace of either of them.

Her Great-grandfather, Augustus Harrison NUNELEE was born 28 Apr 1876 in Alabama and she hasn't been able to find him on the 1880 or 1900 census either. Thus she has never been able to settle the issue.

In 1910 Gus was was a HH in Denton Co TX, single, and living with only his Step-mother Martha age 60 born TN/Tn/Tn: no information was given as to whether she had any children. So, if Thomas and Nancy are Gus' parents they were both deceased by 1910.

Gus died 25 May 1913 in Texas when his only child was barely 9 months old and just 2 1/2 years after he married Mary Melviney [HERRON]. The state of Texas has no record of his death but it is believed he died in either Denton County where his daughter was born or Delta county where he is said to be buried.

I do not know who Walter or Amanda's parents or siblings are
but because of the surname spelling Nunnelee and Nunnellee I am certain that Walter is a descendant of James Franklin Nunnelee or Walter Franklin Nunnelee both sons of William Womack Nunnelee and Ann [Franklin].

My money is on Walter's middle name being Hubbard or Hamilton and that his parents were Martha [Terrell] and Simeon Nunnelee son of James Franklin Nunnelee son of William Womack Nunnelee and Ann [Franklin].

One last item, Walter received a CSA pension :
"W. H. NUNNELLEE applied for a Confederate pension from Bradley Co AR in 1908, citing his service in Co D, 20th Mississippi Infantry. His application was approved on August 6, 1908. Amanda Nunnellee also applied for a Confederate pension from Bradley County in 1912, stating that her husband had died on August 10, 1911. Her application was approved on August 8, 1912. The PENSION record file NUMBER is 4039."

If anyone can share any information on the ancestry or descendants of this "orphaned" Nunnellee family I would deeply, deeply appreciate it.

Looking for information about Richard and Harry Gilbert sons of Mark Nunley and Emma Blanton. Born in Alabama about 1895 and 1897. Mark Nunley was born in Tishomingo, MS. Harry Gilbert was a soldier in WWI and is buried in National Cemetery in Corinth, MS.

James W. Nunley born about 1881 in Denmark married Else Christensen, born April 16, 1885 in Aarlborg, Denmark. Both lived in Elsinore, Sevier County, Utah. Their son Darrall b. August 15, 1914 died in Italy June 17, 1944. He was a tank gunner in US Army armored division. Any information about this family will be appreciated!

The original name was our American emigrant spelling
N-U-N-N-A-L-L-Y first found in Virginia in the mid 1600's.

Throughout the years that surname has been mis-spelled and/or re-spelled into many, many variations but...........

Do you have a N-U-N-N-E-L-E-E in your family ?????
If you have just one, we would sure like to hear from you!

This exact spelling was "created" about the mid 1700's in Virginia and can be traced directly to Chesterfield County, VA. The reason for changing the spelling isn't known and only a handful of Nunnally's began using the new one.....

One of those few was my 4th G-grandpa, born William Womack NUNNALLY in 1738, who changed his spelling to Nunnelee in the 1780's while still living in Chesterfield Co, VA, but his father didn't and none of his uncles, aunts, or siblings did either !!! 4th G-grandpa William Womack NUNNELEE died 1804 Elbert Co GA and the only Nunnelee’s who ever lived in Georgia were his descendants.

So the spelling N-U-N-N-E-L-E-E is extremely unique and anyone in the USA who used it are unquestionably related to each other.

As of today, there are only 143 Nunnelee published phone listings in the entire USA with none in VA or GA !!! There are probably non-published phone listings and cell phone accounts but I do not have access to those records.

So, again ... if you have just one record of a N-U-N-N-E-L-E-E in your family or if you know anyone who uses our spelling, we would sure like to hear from you!

I can verify the posted photo as that of Robert and Martha Clay Nunley. I made a visit to the home of my Mother's (daughter of John Nunley) first cousin (daughter of Ben Nunley) in Cattlettsburg, KY two weeks ago looking for information on the Nunley's and she has the same picture sitting on her mantle. She also had directions to the gravesite for Robert and Martha which we visited the same day.

Polly NUNNARY; Caswell Co, NC

Polly NUNNARY was bonded to marry Johnston BEAVER in Caswell Co, NC on 3 Jul 1792. The bondsmen are Johnston Beaver and Alex Nunnary.

The 1790 Caswell Co, NC Census has an entry transcribed by Ancestry.com as "Alie Nunnand", but images are not available for viewing. As such, I am speculating that the Alex who is the bondsman for the marriage is Polly's father, though he may also be a brother.

I am a direct descendant of Johnston Beaver & Polly Nunnary. I would very much appreciate any information on either family, and I'll be happy to share any of my limited documentation.

He married my GG-grandma Caroline Dillard [GRESHAM]
29 Apr 1828 in Taliaferro Co GA. She was the d/o James Dillard Gresham & Mary Polly [ELLINGTON].

GG-grandpa was a lawyer and he and GG-grandma moved to Wetumpka, Coosa Co AL just before the 1840 census was taken.

For some reason my G-grandpa was left off this 1850 census and was listed as "Uriah" on the 1860 Macon Co AL census.

Alvin (Absolam) married Mary Angeline [? WHO ?] before 1843 in either Alabama or Mississippi - both were born in Alabama but all of their children were born in Mississippi......

This man is shown as Absolam NUNNELEE on the 1860 and 1870 census but shown as Alvin NUNLEY on the 1850 and 1880 census and all 4 censuses have the same wife and children !!!

N-U-N-N-E-L-E-E is a unique spelling and used only by the descendants of William Womack Nunnelee (1738 Va - 1804 Ga) who changed the surname from NUNNALLY when he moved to Georgia in the 1780's.

There may be a major clue as to his parents on the 1860 Pontotoc Co MS transcription below.......???

I am positive this Malinda HANDLEY is Malinda Amanda [MORGAN] who 1m Howell NUNNELEE 04 Feb 1818 in Elbert Co GA - both born in GA.
Shortly after Howell's death 1827 Dallas Co AL, Malinda 2m William F. Handley and had 6 chn live to adulthood.
So the only reason I can think of as to why she wasn't living with her Nunnelee or Handley chn in 1860, is that Alvin (Absolam) must be her SON or his wife Mary Angeline is her DAUGHTER...... Alvin (Absalom), however, FITS the 1830 and 1840 Dallas Co AL censuses as her oldest son whereas Mary Angeline doesn't.........

I am looking for information regarding George Nunley. It is reported he was born in Ohio. Not sure of date but he would have been born around 1860 to 1870.
He married Mallie/Mollie Bell.
He had a daughter named Lida Nunley who is reported as being Mallie's stepdaughter, so I assume Lida's mother must have died before George married Mallie.
Mallie's full name is Malzona Marie Bell. Some reports have her listed as Malachi Della Bell but that name is incorrect.
George was know to have been a gambler by profession.
Any information will be helpful.
George and Mallie married in 1899 in Lee county Texas.
It is unknown what happened to him after that.

"Ruth Ellen Nunley, 92, of Clinton died Saturday, November 19, 2005. She was born in Elba, the daughter of the late Jeff and Sally Tipton Isaacs. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Nunley and by a son, Harold Nunley.
Suvivors include her children: Don Nunely and Wilma Miller, both of Clinton, and Linda Cardin of Atlanta, GA, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Services were held Tuesday, November 22, at Dennard Community Church with Tom Jolly officiating. Interment was at Dennard Cemetery by Roller-McNutt of Clinton.

“Tedo” Cecil Joe Nunley passed away Feb. 2. Cecil was born Sept. 7, 1941 in Oklahoma City, Okla. to Cecil Joe Nunley and Mildred Newcomer Nunley. He was raised in southern California where he graduated from Excelsior High School. He later moved to Vernal in 1973.

Tedo loved adventures of all kinds including surfing, water skiing, boating, fishing, hunting, and camping. He was a genuine “River Rat”. He shared his talents of wood working and landscaping with others every chance that he got. Tedo knew ‘no stranger’; he was a true friend to all.

He is survived by his loving wife Allyson Warren Nunley of Vernal; children, Scott (Jamie) Nunley of Vernal, Kenny (Jen) Nunley, Stacey Allred (Coal Jackson) of Calif., Mark (Sherry) Nunley of Colo., Tyler Robb of Roosevelt; mother, Mildred Nunley Hansen; brothers, Dick (Carol) Nunley of Ariz., Artie (Annette) Hansen of Vernal and Leah (Bob) Osiek of Utah.

All I know about these 4 sisters is shown on the census below........
Their father Mansfield (aka Mason, Manson) was born and raised in Calhoun Co Al and noved to Marshall County after 1880. He was the son of William Nunnelly & Melisaa mary [Roberts].
His wife's name is supposed to be Mattie [SMITH] and his son Carl's daughter thinks he died in 1910.
We don't have a clue as to the parents or siblings of wife Mattie, who any of his daughters married or where they ended up.

Hi....

I am looking for information on James Madison Nunley b. 3/26/1848. and was married to Minerva Lou Gribble. I think James Madison fought for the Confederacy but I'm having problems finding his Civil War information because there are several James Nunley's on the war rosters. Also, does anyone know who James Madison Nunley's father was? Thanks for any information!!

I was adopted at age 2, by the --------- family, of ------, co. Ky.

My grandfather on mothers side was born 11-7-15 and is of Irish descent, a tall burley man, :( farmer, factory worker during the war)
My grandmother on mothers side was born 8-16-15 and is also of Irish desent. A rather tall lanky woman.
As this is my first attempt at locating my birth mother, I hope I have provided enough info.
I have no record of birth family s home:

It's possible birth mother lived with other faimly members.

I'm looking for information on a Nunley link. Mary "Polly" Ann Lockhart had 3 children named Robert, Mary and Ella Nunely. I don't know who their father was.

I know that Ella went on to marry Lafayette Roberts and that they had 2 children as of 1900 -- Julia and John.

I have been told that the Nunley's of Raunds have been there since the the church which dates before 1066. Northamptonshire U,K .She was the son of Owen Nunley
who is related to Samuel Nunley indirectly.I recently
received helpful information from a descendant in Australia.

I just started on my grandmothers line (Clista Mae Nunley)..her father was Edward Archie Nunley (1872-1957) and his father was James Madison Nunley...but that is as far as the family bible carries me...I do know that they were from Warren County TN...anyone else researching this line?

Do anyone have a Victoria Nunley Mcgee. She was born around 1875. On the 1920 Census her mother was from South Carolina. She is african american. I was told they had some indian blood. She married Watkins Mcgee from TN. They had five daughters and 2 sons. Her daughter Rosa Mcghee Millon just passed away in Nov. 2002. She was a school teacher in Hernando MS. Please help if you can. These are their names of there childern.

[Hi. I have found a listing for you for one of your great grandparents.

The listing is in Cemeteries of Madison Co., MO. VOL II Christian Cemetery pg. 139
Matilda Ann Jackson is listed, though it is noted that her grave is not marked with a
headstone. So the possibility is that Thomas is buried there also, and does not have a
marker either.

*JACKSON, Matilda Ann 10 March 1859-12 July 1933 D/O John Jordan Webb & Jane Elizabeth Nunley. Md: Thomas A. Jackson on 1 Feb 1880

I also checked the mortuary records that I have and Thomas Andrew Jackson does
not appear in those either. His death probably occurred between 1920-1930 and you
can get a death certificate from the state of Missouri. Hope this helps. There are other
listings for a Thomas Andrew Jr who married Ella Arnett, and another curious listing for
an Elizabeth Jane Webb Jackson d/o John Webb (?) b. 1840@ Middletown TN. -
22 Apr 1930 most likely w/o Richard, they are buried in the Methodist Cemetery.
They MAY be some relation. Hope that this helps.]
