"I am looking for Nunnally, Nunnelly or other variations who have Native American ancestry. Can you give some info on the origin of native ancestry in that line?"
============my reply to above email============
Hi Mr Rozier,
My line is from Walter NUNNELEE last record found is
31 Jan 1852 Chambers Co, Al when he & my 2g-grandma Caroline D. [Gresham] divorced. 2g-grandma Caroline is last found living with her daughter Cornelia Caroline [NUNNELEE] Burt 1870 Hill Co Tx.
My G-Grandpa Eugene Lavarsha NUNNELEE (1847-1909) told every one of his 11 chn (over & over!) that he was born in FRANCE and that his surname was originally "DeNunnelee".
Imagine my "shock" when I found my G-Grandma's CSA widow's pension application and learned he was born in Georgia!!! What makes the most sense regarding G-Grandpa's "Tall Texas Tale" is that he was hiding a Native American ancestry as did others using terms such as "Black Dutch", "Melungeon", "Black Irish", etc.....
In all my years searching for my N540's, I have found only 2 references to Native American ancestry and what I have to share at this time is precious little as I haven't had the opportunity to follow them up.
(1) fyi: I have tried to make contact with the living wife of a "Nunnellee" who said her husband is of French (DeNunnellee) ancestry and Native American ancestry. I recv'd 1 reply to my emails putting me off until later..... but later never came and is probably because "her husband is reticent to discuss his N.A. ancestry."
I will forward you an email with this correspondance.
I will also send you a WordPad doc entitled N540 French Connection with what little info I have found on this line myself
(2) a few weeks ago a grand daughter of my great-aunt Annie Caroline [NUNNELEE] Pruitt called me and said she had seen some Nunnelee's & Nunley's on the Native American rolls in Oklahoma but couldn't remember which rolls they were on (groan!)
Have you learned anymore about any N540 & Native American connections since this posting? Also, could you give some information on your N540 ancestry?
