RE: Alfred F. Nygard (b. 1861 Denmark - d. 17 May 1941, Grand Rapids)

Jan,

I too am researching Alfred F. Nygard. He designed and sculpted the plaster work, as well as the wood carvings, in what was the Powers' Theatre Grand Rapids in 1902. After arriving from Denmark in 1887 with his wife and son they settled New York City for a few months before relocating to Grand Rapids. He was a wood carver with the Universal Tripod Furniture Company, then becoming Royal Furniture Company by 1893. Shortly after his wife dies in 1893 he and his son William R. move to Detroit. His son William R. Nygard was a styled a Plasterer. By 1937 William Nygard marries and settles Lansing, Michigan.

I'm trying to find other projects Alfred may have been commissioned for in Grand Rapids. Maybe some of his work survives. I know he was perfecting Staff Plaster back then that was new to America, popular in Europe. He would design, carve and make the molds in his Detroit studio (1902). Once the molds complete he arrived in Grand Rapids where a special room was setup in the Powers Plaster Mine and Factory was on the Grand River to cast the Staff Plaster.

In July 1929 he moved back to Grand Rapids to settle for good. Alfred F. (1861-1941), his wife Alma Julia (1858-1893), son William R. (1883-1964) and William's wife Maribel (1883-1967) are buried in Oakhill Cemetery, Grand Rapids.

I also read somewhere Alfred was was a close personal friend and very active with Edsel Ford and Fordson Village, also known as Fordville or Edselville. I wonder in Greenfield Village may have records on him?

He also worked on carving in the Edsel Ford "Honeymoon Cottage". http://www.flickr.com/photos/joebehr/sets/72157624952170731/

I also have a news article from the Grand Rapids Herald dated: 8 Dec 1929 I found in the Biographical Vertical File GRPL - Grand Rapids Public Library has on Alfred Nygard. I can digitally send it your way.

The news article I have mentioned he was commissioned by James Scripps to work on his residence on Trumbull Ave... Some time around 1910 I believe Alfred was teaching at Cranbrook Arts & Crafts School of Detroit but for only a few years...

Cranbrook Digital Collections - Scripps Trumbull Avenue Residence
http://cdm9024.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/...

Cranbrook Digital Collections - Trumbull Avenue House
http://cdm9024.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/...

I'm in the process of tracking down his family descendants to possibly get a photo of Alfred.

Would love to know what you may have found.

Jim Winslow

My mom's uncle, born in the early 1900's was Hannas Norrback and my Grandmother was Elna Norrback. My grandmothers mom who was born in Sundom, Finland was Eva Lisa Norrback. Let me know if you think there is some relation, I would love to know. I also would be interested in anyone with the last name Granholm which was my Grandfathers name on my mom's side who was also from that area in Finland. Hope to hear from you.

I am researching a Danish born sculptor named Alfred Nygard. He immigrated to the US during the late 19th century. By the early 1900 he was working with high-profile architects, such as Albert Kahn, in Detroit, Michigan. I believe the he died in Grand Rapids, Michigan during the 1930s. I'm searching for a photograph of him, and information about his commissions in and around Detroit.
Thanks in advance,
Jan Durecki

I’m not sure if you will get this but here it goes.

I’m related to a family of Nygards that are from the Vaasa / Narpes area of Finland. My great uncle, Erik Nygard, lives on the farm that he and my grandmother, Ethel Nygard grew up on.

From what I understand that farm has been in the family for the past 300 years. It is located in a little village called Valsas (I’m not sure if I am spelling that right).

The farm it self is approximately 50 miles south of Vaasa and the closest town of any size would be Narpes or Overmark.

I’m not sure if this helps you. I can talk with my family to see if the names you have sound familiar.

Linnea

Hello, I'm researching the Stortors family (note real spelling used to be storthors) I have several Nygards in my extended family. They're connected to Ontonagon MI. A Great Aunt of my husband Selena Stortors married Axel Nygard who was born Ocy 18 1893 in Kristinestad, Finland. Do you think we are related? There is also Nygard's on my husband's Great Grandmother's Mother was Clare Nygard. Clare Nygard married Matt Norrback and had several children. It was Edla Mary Norrback who married my husband's Great Granfather Charles Ericksson Storthors. Both Edla Mary Norrback and Charles Ericksson were born in 1871 in Overmark, Vassa, Finland.

Please write back to me at stortorslucy@yahoo.com if you think we are related. I'm not a full memember on Ancestry.com yet. If we are realted I'd be happy to share what I have.

Anselm Nygard d. NYC 1885

A plot otherwise containing members of the Comerford, Costello(e) and Reid families in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY also contains Anselm Nygard, described on his death certificate as 17 years and 21 days of age whose unnamed parents were residents of Christiana, Norway. His occupations was paper box maker and he was single. Anselm lived at 278 Bridge St., Brooklyn, a building described as having 3 families with him living on the third floor. He had been in the US 3 years. Brooklyn death certificate number 15237, 1885. I cannot determine any relationship to other people in the grave. I hopes this helps someone finding a missing relative.

Information on family of Nels (Nils) Nygard (Nygaard)

Hi.. My name is Jim Nygard and I am the grandson of Nils and the son of Roy Nygard and I am trying to track down any information on friends and relatives of any of the Nils Nygard family. I have found some information under both names that I have been able to document as factual. Nels Nygaard came to Ballard, Seattle, WA in 1906 from Honefos, Norway. He brought with him a wife, Karolina or Caroline and a son Henry Albert Nygaard. Nels father was Anders Hansen also of Honefos. I believe that Caroline died in childbirth along with a son that was still born sometime between 1920 and 1930. The 1920 Census list's Caroline as wife and the children as Alf H, Harry, Norm, Thelma, Norma and Roy. The errors are Alf H is really Henry Albert and Norma is really Norm O. The 1930 Census list's Birtha as wife and the children as Harry, Norman, Roy and Carol. Missing from the 30 Census is Henry and Thelma. Henry I found was in the military. Thelma I haven't found as an individual in the census yet.

I am particularly interested in finding information any of my cousins, whom all except one who is female and I do not know their married names. Also any information on friends or relatives in Norway. I know that Nels had at least one brother in Norway whose name I believe was John or some variation of John.

Thanks in advance... Jim Nygard

Nygards of Vaasa, Finland. Shipping? Farming? John Nygard 1862. All info welcome!

Dear all,

My great grandfather is John Nygard, also known as Johan Nygard. I believe that he was born in Narpes, Vaasa, Finland in 1862.

Unfortunately, my family knows very little about him other than this. Some of my ancestors state that he may have been involved with shipping or sailing in some way. Possibly as a captain or a merchant. Does anyone know about Nygards that were involved in shipping near Vaasa Finland?

Is the name Nygard referring to a place near Vaasa in Finland? As I understand it, the name Nygard is Swedish, meaning "new land" or "new farm." Is there a farm near Vaasa that was named "Nygard"?

Any and all information and discussion would be appreciated!

Sincerely,

Travis
