Hi Angela,
I read your message, that You don't know any Mihály: Mihály is Michael and János is John in English. I was looking for a Mihály Nyitrai for a friend. That Nyitrai Mihály lived in the same time, but in Túrkeve, Hungary. his sons were:Mihály 1877, Lajos 1878, Mária 1880, Rozália 1881, András 1883.
Ilona, from Hungary
Thank you for this information. I am not researching the Gottfried family though. It is interesting to know, however, that they seem to be close to the Nyitrai family so I will keep that in mind.

I have never heard of Mihaly Nyitrai or Janos Nyitrai, but you never know, they could be related. Thanks again!

Hi Angela
You definetly need to get the rolls of microfilm to your nearest LDS Family Center and go through them. There are a lot of entries for Gottfried and quite a feew for Nyitray. I wasnát counting but the Gottfried seem to out number the Nzitraz entries.

I wasn't able to take any copies today as they had some problem with the microfilm scanner

On April 19, 1869 Janós Varga age 23 married Marie Gottfried age 20. His parents were Michael Varga and Anna Jonusite. Speelling may be off as some entries are very light.

Her parents were George Gottfried and MAria Szaka?????.

Another entry Jan. 19 188ö
MihalyNzitray 23 married Julianna Gyuresco age 26. His parents ewere János Nyitray and Anna Tokeszky.

I was mainlylooking for Czernay and found quite a few. I don't know how they are all related to me but in somw cases a Nyitray or a Gottfried were sponsors for a baptism or witness for a marriage.
If you order the rolls it will take a few weeks for them to arrive. At some point I will get a copy of one entrz and explain the headings etc. so you knnow what you are looking at.

Joe
Hi Angela
Glad to be of help.

I am in the LDS Family Centre tomorrow all day to look at the Forro microfilm. I will keep an eye out for the Nyitray, Nyitrai names.Any other names? Let me know. No never mind, I'll look up your origiinal post. As I recall you had a number of names listed.

I think I mentioned this before the surnames are in Hungarian, the firstname arein LAtin and the wordings are in hungarian. If I find one for one of your names I'll take a picture and send it to you.
Joe

Thanks, Joe. You're an angel. I definitely needed your guidance on ordering the microfilm and also on the Hungarian translations. I don't know a word of Hungarian! My last remaining relative who spoke it was my great-grandmother and she died when I was just two years old. Thanks again. I really appreciate your help.

Hi Angela

The microfilm rolls are for the Roman Catholic parish register of births, marriages and deaths in Forró. You have to read every entry to find names you are looking for.It is a little time consuming. I read through about 19 years of marriages and 9 years of baptisms in about 5 hours and found 7 marraiages and 5 baptisms for people with the last name Czernai but found none for another last name I am researching.

When ordering you need the following info

Kerezteltek 1730-1814 Házasultak, Halottak 1730-1827 - Vault INTL Film 623356
Kerezteltek 1814-1895 Vault INTL Film 623357
Házasultak, halottak 1828-1895 Vault INTL Film 623358

For info if you don't know hungarian.
Kerezteltek = Baptisms
Hazasultak = Marriages
Halottak = Deaths

I ordered all three but only two have arrived 623357-8
The other is on backorder.

Due to the condition of the papes and fading of ink when being microfilmed the early marriage book only started being readable around 1860
The baptism book around 1858.

While at the LDS FAmily center the volunteer told me that the LDS ia in the process of digitizing all the micro filmed records. The project is in its early stages.

I tried it and found a relative in the 1900 US Census that the Ancestry.com search didn't have.

The URL is http://search.labs.familysearch.org
The site is a little slow as it is a beta site. You have to register (email address only)

Good Luck
Joe Czernai
For info, Andrew is Andras in hungarian and Andreas in LAtin. RC church records show names in Latin back then.
I am currently researching the records of the Roman Catholic Church in Forro which are for marriages and baptisms. The micro film is only readable from 1860. In checking out my family name I have found a lot of info.

Are you looking for info prior to 1889. If so check out the Church of Later Day Saints family research site to find out how to get copies of the mictrofilm records they have for research. I can give you the microfilm roll numbers if you want.

JOe Czernai

Nyitray/Nyitrai Family from Forro, Abauj, Hungary

Hello. I am reposting this thread to the Nyitrai Board. I am looking for information on the family of Michael Nyitrai and Mary Bodner from Forro, Abauj, Hungary.

They had a number of children. Three came to the United States and settled in the Toledo, Ohio area. They are:

1. Andrew Nyitrai (Nov 17, 1889 - Mar 1963)
Immigrated in 1905 to Toledo Ohio from Forro
His first name was also spelled Andras and Andreas. I've seen his last name spelled Nyitrac.
2. Mary Nyitrai (married Steve Seles)
3. Theresa Nyitrai (married John Gottfried)

Two children who never left Hungary (that I know of)
4. Anna
5. John
6. ??? There may be more siblings in Hungary

Andrew (my great-grandfather) married Elizabeth Veres in Toledo Ohio in October, 1913. They had six children and per the 1920 census, the family name was spelled Nyitrai. Andrew and Elizabeth changed the 'i' at the end of their name to 'y' sometime after 1920. Their children are Andrew Jr, Margaret (Breitner), Mary (Siwajek), Helen (Petraska), Edward and Robert.

I would hugely appreciate any information or tips. My email address is oldkingdom@hotmail.com

The Lima News Ohio June 21, 1926

'WE ARE LOST," SAYS NOTE IN BOTTLE

Toledo, Ohio

Cast up by the lake yesterday came a message in a bottle "we are all lost" Other writing was indecipherable.

The identification bureau of the police dept. has taken possession of the missive which wasd written on tissue paper and corked in a bottle.

The only recent disaster to which the bottle might be traced, in thr opinion of police, is the sinking of a power cruiser last March, when Michael NYITRAI and Andrew KAYUH, both of Toledo were drowned.

With the aid of a magnifying glass, police later deciphered other parts of the message. It said
"We are all lost thru the ice. Just left Point Pelee
Island. The ice is xxxxx they xxxxxx"

The note was signed "Eva".

cheryl BALOG wenberg
