Still trying to find info about my grandfathers family..We know he came to theUS from Finland as I have his naturalization papers( 1888) but dont know when he came. Thought I had found his family in Finland on HisKi database but now not sure.We found a picture in my fathers belongings..on the back was written Fanny Nyland 91 4th Place, Brooklyn. I found her on 1915 New York State Census living at that address with an aunt and uncle named Gustus and Elizabeth Nyland..Gustus may be a brother of my grandfather, Carl E.Nyland. It shows Gustus was a blacksmith. The 1930 Census shows him on 5th St and listed as Gustava born about 1866and immigration year 1875.My grandfather changed his name to Erickson in 1890 and went to India as a missionary in 1892..one of the Missionary Alliance papers show his fathers name was John Erik. He met and married Violetta Case while there. If anyone knows this family I would appreciate hearing from you and would be happy to share information.

My Grandma is a Nancy Jones nee Nyland and she was born in 1922. Her Parents I believe were a John Thomas Niland b.1889 and Sarah Jane Jones nee Davis both born in the Wolverhampton area.

I also believe John Thomas Niland's mother was a Ann Hyland born Newport in 1869 and her mother Mary McNally born in Ireland in 1829

Lillian's maiden name was Goldsmith. She married Edward Nyland in 1914 but they were separated by 1930. Her mother's name was Lillian Lelep.

Some of the family has spelled the name "Nyland," which is the Swedish spelling. Others have spelled the name "Nylund," the Finnish spelling My great grandfather Alfred, whose real last name was Svarvar, adopted Nylund. Some of his children changed the spelling to Nyland. My father Robert Alfred, who used Nylund, had a brother who used Nyland. The Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Crystal Falls, Michigan, has a mixture of tombstones, some with Nyland and some with Nylund. It's interesting that most of them are related, depsite the difference in spelling.

Many of the Nylund's lived in the Ostrobothnia region of Finland. You may wish to consult the Genealogical Society of Finland for more information; they are on the World Wide Web and are very helpful. Some of your ancestors probably lived in Kvevlax. For example, Jacob Jacobsson Nylund married Maria Beata Jonasdotter Hjort in Kvevlax on 8 December 1844. My great grandfather was born in Kvevlax on 19 December 1869 and came to the U.S. in 1889. His name was originally Alfred Anders Johansson Svarvar, but he changed his last name to Nylund. He likely knew some of the Nylund's who lived in Kvevlax. Interestingly, his oldest son, Oscar (born 18 May 1894 in Hancock, Michigan; died 2 September 1936 in Portsmouth, Ohio), married Josephine Boutin, who was born either in Hibbing or Chisholm, Minnesota, in 1900 or 1903 (I haven't been able to confirm the date).

In 1992, I was given a scrapbook full of obituaries that were based mainly around Indiana county from a wonderful lady from Apollo. Over the years, this scrapbook became missing due to several moves as I changed employment.
After hurricane Rita's evacuation, I stumbled upon the scrapbook and have scanned as many obits as I could.

Looking for information on what ship he was on, what port in Sweden he departed from and what port in USA that he arrived at. He filed for citizenship at Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. Changed his name to Charles Nyland. May have been Nylund when he entered USA. Family came from Sweden later and settled in Morris Run, PA. My wife is his granddaughter.

My wife confirms that John Edwin Nyland was her mother's brother. Anna Nyland married Seward Tunnicliff, and they had two daughters, Eleanor, and Norma. Anna Tunnicliff died in June 1962. She had cousins in Morris Run,PA. and her confirmation was at the Lutheran Church at Morris Run. She received a Swedish Bible (contents are entirely in Swedish). My wife has her bible, but there are no Vital statistics contained.
Norma and I, and our youngest daughter went to Sweden and Finland in September 1984. We found the records at the church at Korsholm/Mustasaari. We found many records of the Paro family, and the church clerk told us that Norma had relatives living there, so she called them by phone. Ludwig Wiklund picked us up and took us to the farm that his ancestors had built. They called all the relatives they could and they came to meet us.We were only in Vaasa three days but we found a lot of information on the Paro family.
There are twins in the Tunnicliff family, butwe are not aware of any twins in the Nyland family.

This is to correct some information given in the message of 12/31/99. Further research re John Edwin Nyland reveals that he was the son of Edward Nyland, and he did have a sister Anna, but my wife's mother, Anna Nyland was the daughter of Karl (*Charles) Nyland, and she did have a brother John Nyland. This is just to set the record straight.

The two brothers came to America from Sweden, but they did live in Finland prior to going to Sweden. They also are believed to have spelled the name, NYLUND. Their name prior to NYLUND was MEUTS. Apparently changed by the brothers when they lived in Sweden.

I have photos of several Nylands, probably from the late 1870,s-1880s. The captions say William Nyland, Ellie Nyland, Mrs Jane Nyland. Another may or may not be the husband of Ellie. These are included in a Sample/Baker family album and I do not know the relationship between the Nylands and the Sample family. Some censuses of Albany, NY, indicate that a John Nyland, wife Jane, daughter Ellie and son William, lived there about this time. John Nyland was a butcher and was born in Holland. The Baker side of the family was also from Holland. If anyone out there has info about these Nylands or would like copies of the photos, I would be happy to share.

My grandfather Isaac (Isak) Nyland born April 1870 in Finland married Sanna Kathrina Mattson abt. 1892 in Finland. Isaac came to U.S. in 1893 and settled in Minnesota, Katherine came later in 1895, went to MN, a son was born abt. 1897 to 1899 in Hibbing, MN. 1900 Montana Census shows the family and a brother of Katherine (Jacob Mattson) living in Neihart Montana. The information I need is what town that Isaac and Katherine came from in Finland, they spoke the Swedish language. Isaac changed his name to Nyland when he came to the U.S. I don't know what his last name was when he left Finland.

The rumor is that she and Theo moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands, because Theo was unable to get citizenship in the US. If anyone has any help or advice as to which direction I should take to find them there, I would be grateful!

Halvor and Anna (Barnewton) had many children: Ole, Lars, Hudley, Knute, Inga, Gena, Theodore, Oleana, Ole, Tonnie, Henry, Tone Helena, Henry, Annie, and Arthur. They first emmigrated to SW Minnesota in Cottonwood, Lyon County, MN. Then around 1906 they moved to Gully, Polk County, MN.

There are more brothers and sister to these Nylands in OLDHAM England. Will have more information when I get b/cert of Mary Winifred Nyland. Mary Arnfield is my grandmother and she died when my father was 6. He was raised by his two aunts one being Mary Winifred Nyland. I am looking for any descendants of Karl G.E. Nylund -- it's possible that the spelling may have been changed to Nyland at some point. He came to the US from Finland in 1893, may have lived in Brooklyn, married and had one or two sons. He permanently returned to Finland in 1917 without his family.

My husband's gggm Bridget Nyland comes from family of Nyland Cutlery Works in England, and may have lived in Ulster. She married Anthony McDonald who was in a seminary on the north/south border. They went to the US about 1849, lived in Troy, NY, and moved to St. Paul, MN about 1857. They brought a daughter Catherine and later had several more children. She died about 1900.

My name is Winnogene Sheffield Johnson, Margaret Nyland Sturgis Bruce was my uncle's first wife. His name is Donald Hugh Sturgis. They had a son named Donald Hugh Sturgis Jr. I remember Margaret when I was a little girl. She lived I think on So. Dakota St. on 700 block. I don't know what her married name was at that time but she lived there with a beautiful little girl and my cousin Donny. I saw your information on Gen forum.com. I would like more information about Donny. My understanding is that Margaret and her family went to Washington State and came back to Butte
in the 1960's for awhile. My mother was Winifred Sturgis the sister of Donald Hugh Sturgis.

My wife is anxious to know what information you have concerning her grandfather. He was naturalized at Wellsboro, PA. My wife has seen the documentation that said he "revoked his allegiance to Russia ( Finland was Russian territory and that is where Karl was born near Vaasa in Mustasaari-Now Korsholm/ Mustasaari0. We were there in 1997, and there are cousins living there!

My Ggreat grandfather, Christoffer Nijland (1829-1919) immigrated from Eibergen, Gelderland, Netherlands to Cleveland, Ohio in 1854. Parents were Anton Nijland (1794-1855) and Dina Klein Naats or Nahuis(1797-1847).

His wife was Trijntje Klevinga or Clevering born 14 Feb 1834 in Gronigen.
