Hi Richard, I am researching my husband's mother's family. We know her mother's name was Artell Nylander and married Charles Board. I found an Artell Harmon listed on the 1920 Census along with Norris Nylander, Albert B. Nylander. Cora Hughes is also listed. Through some research I found a Cora Nylander Hughes and in trying to figure out who is who I am wondering if Artel had been born to Cora so young that her parents adopted her baby(she is listed as adopted on the census). We know that Artell married at the age of 14 and had only the one child Christine Board. But she also died very young when Christine was still a child. This family is such a mystery to me. I would love to know if your Nylander family is related.

Hi Ladi

I came across this book on Google with the history of the CMS in Sierra Leone
http://books.google.com/books?id=69twAAAAMAAJ&dq=nylande...

It has G.R. Nylander's age as 29 at the time he was selected to serve a mission in Africa. He was married in Sierra Leone to Phillis Hazley who died at age 22 and then later to Ann Beberith.

The name Nylander is found in Sweden, Norway, Germany and England. It is also a Dutch word for inhabitant or inhabitant of new land.

Good luck on your search
Hi Ladi,

Interestingly I went to Ghana in 1993 and a number of people mentioned to me there that my name was Ghanian - I was a curiosity because I was the first white Nylander that they had seen. Unfortunately I could not catch up with any of my namesakes whilst in Ghana, but I would have liked to.

For your information my great grandfather Carl Augustus Nylander jumped ship in Melbourne, Victoria, in the 1860's and settled in country Victoria where I was born in 1948. He was Swedish, and I think that this is where most of the Nylanders come from. I was told by a Swede some years ago that we came from Finland during a very bad climatic period and were known as new landers - hence Nylander. I don't know whether this is true or not though.

regards

Jim Nylander
Perth
Australia

I'm seeking information on a Christine Nylander and her husband Magnuson Peterson or perhaps Peter Magnuson Peterson. They were married somewhere in Sweden some time between 1863 and 1868. Magnuson Peterson may have died before the family came to America. Eventually, most of the children from that union settled in and near Phelps County, Nebraska. Any information would be appreciated.

My Nylander ancestors

Am seeking information that can be used to verify/add to data passed down through the family. G'g grandfather was Anders Swenson Nylander, born Sweden 9 Aug 1808, died in South Dakota in 188?. His wife was Kirstie Erickson, born 9 May 1814, died in South Dakota in 188?. They reportedly arrived in the U.S. in 1875. Children were Erick Gustav Nylander b 1840 d.1901; Anna C. Nylander b 1842 d 1935 in Salem, OR; Louisa Nylander b 1843; Marie Nylander b 1845 and Sven Nylander b 1849.
Anna C. married Amund Engbretson in Norway in 1873 and they emigrated to the US in 1881, eventually living in Missoula, MT where he died in 1919. It is believed that Louisa married an Andrew Johnson and that this couple also lived in Missoula, MT. Major questions are where in Sweden were these folks born? Where in SD did they die? Is there anyone else out there researching this family?

NYLANDERS OF WEST AFRICA

My name is Ladi Nylander.
I live and work here in Accra,Ghana where I was born in July 1946, a Ghanaian by birth. I am in the 3rd generation from a group of
Nylanders (two brothers and a sister) who set off from Sierra Leone to other parts of West Africa (Liberia, Ghana and Nigeria)to ply their various trades.
We are several generations down the line from the original "Nylander", a nineteen year old German Lutheran I believe who, together with others, were sent to Sierra Leone in the early 1800s as the first Missionaries of the New Society.
The history has it that "to its dismay the New Society could not find any Englishmen willing or available to be sent as missionaries to Africa. So, as with The
Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (1698) and The Society for the Propagation of
the Gospel (1701), the first missionaries sent out from The Church Mission Society (CMS) were neither Anglican nor English, but Lutherans from Germany........."
So there is a Nylander family well entrenched here in West Africa, & most probably descended from the nineteen year old missionary gentleman whose family may well have moved to Germany but originally from Sweden.
Hi John!

I guess you posted your message about 1&1/2 years ago, not 3. Oops!! I was so excited when I read your message. I must say I about fell out of my chair. No one has ever called my grandparents, their grandparents, except Ed! It was a really strange feeling! I went on the web. and found 4 email addresses in CA for John Nylander. I emailed them all, but no one responded. I guess they are not you. Do you still live in CA? After I read your message, I went and looked up Hilda Esterholm, Grandma Nylander's younger sister. We often went to visit her. There are death records for her in Munising,MI 1887-1982. After Grandma died in '72, we kind of lost contact with her and family. I tried looking up Sophie Johnson, but only get your message. I was looking in an old Bible yesterday and dad had written.....
Elmer J. Nylander (everyone called dad Jack)
Mother: Soffi( notice spelling)Johnson
Father: Jonas Johnson
Mother: Lovisa Johnson
Maria L. Johnson (I don't
know what this means)
Birthplace: Wasa Finland-Bjork

Kind of interesting. I thought she was also from Sweden...but I remember something about Finland. I have lots of letters from Grandpa and Grandma upstairs in a box. When I get a chance, I'll look through them. Many are in Swedish, but I have a Swedish Dictonary..so maybe I can translate some. Please email me at nnylander@cocsd.k12.az.us. Looking forward to hearing from you..Thanks, Nikki
My brother and I are your first cousins!!!

Hi!!!!!

Are you related to Jan Nylander??? I am Nikki Nylander and my brothers name is Edward John. Our father Helmer (Elmer) Nylander was the son of John Nylander and Sophie Johnson. My dad had one brother named Leonard, who was married to Helen. They moved to CA when Ed and I were very small and we saw them very rarely. My dad died in 1971, at age 68, and our Grandma Nylander died the year after. My mother, Evelyn, died in 1990 of breast cancer. That was a very sad time for us, for we had a very close family, even though it was very small. I have often thought maybe some day we would locate Uncle Leonard's children! Neither Ed or I have children. Ed is married to Nellie Juel (Danish) Nylander and I am engaged to marry Ron Carsrud (Norwegian) next June on Mackanic Island. Funny how all of us come from the same part of the world. We used to go a visit Grandma and Grandpa, in Kenton, all the time when we were little. I have lots of pictures that I can share with you! Sorry it took 3 years to resond to this message.
Hi!!!!!

Are you Jan Nylander??? I am Nikki Nylander and my brothers name is Edward John. Our father Helmer (Elmer) Nylander was the son of John Nylander and Sopie Johnson. My dad had one brother named Leonard who was married to Helen. They moved to CA when Ed and I were very small and we saw them very rarely. My Dad died in 1971, at age 68 and our Grandma Nylander died the year after. My mother Evelyn died in 1990 of breat cancer. That was a very sad time for us, for we had a very close family, even though we were very small. I have often thought maybe some day we would locate Uncle Leonard's children! Neither Ed or I have children. Ed is married to Nellie Juel (Danish) Nylander and I am engaged to marry Ron Carsrud (Norwegin) next June on Mackanic Island. Funny how all come from the same part of the world. We used to go a visit Grandma and Grandpa in Kenton all the time when we were little. I have lots of pictures that I can share with you!
Nylanders of West Africa

I have also been wondering about the
connection,since the then Amabssador of
Ghana to Brazil 1980 told me about
the Nylander family in Accra.

At about the same time I discovered that
there was a harbour official i Santarem,
Brazil with the same family name - Nylander.
I have asumed ever since then, that the
name in these two cases must have been of
Dutch origin: Nijlander.

I myself, I am a northerner Swede,
born in Härnösand, Ångermanland, Sweden,
december 1943. My family is of genuine farmer
stock. Relatives of ours emigrated in
the 193o's to Saskachewan, Canada.
We have lost track of them.

Anyhow, I wouldn´t mind geting into closer
contact with whoever bears the Nylander
family name, to try to sort out the reason
behind the simultaneous Nylander presence in
such far apart places as West Afruca and Brazil.

Sven Nylander
