I am descended from James McKinney Oaks who married Jane Norton, daughter of Henry Wilson Norton. They lived in the Bedford/Coffee County area of Tennessee circa 1820-1845. There was a Joseph Oaks in the area about 1820-1830. I have seen info connecting Norton Oaks by inference but no direct line. I would like to share info. Your notes indicate that the father of Norton Oaks was Joseph Oaks. Do you know the father of Joseph Oaks? I would appreciate any info that you have.

Do you know anything about your grandfather's brother Jess? I am trying to verify if the "Jessie T. Oakes/Nannie Self" marriage 2 Jun 1892 in Johnson Co. AR was Jess T. Oakes, brother of Leroy Norton Oakes, sons of Joseph Oakes, and Nancy M. Self, daughter of James Newton Self and Lucy M. Scallions. Lucy was raised by her aunt and uncle, Norton Oakes and Wealthy Mariah Toler Oakes. Lucy and James Self are my great-grandparents. There were several Nancy Selfs, so I haven't found a way to determine if Nancy M. and Nannie are the same person.

My name is Cassandra Oakes. My father's name is William Columbus Oakes, born in 1929 in Bessemer AL. He was a Minister, that later died in 1996.

His father's name is Marcus Oakes and mothers maiden name is Beatrice Thompson. We are a black family, well, what can I say about that? My grandfather's mother was native Indian and my grandmothers father was basically white.

Although he lived in Ohio, my father built at least two churches in Alabama. He was a beautiful man. Some say he was too good looking and sang too good, for church. Before he became a preacher, he lead a gospel singing group.

He loved God and was a strong believer in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I have four brothers, and three sisters. I don't know if this helps you, but I have a strong family whom I love. The Oakes rock.

My email is cassiejoe47@live.com

If you are the Tela I think you are, you are the daughter of my aunt Margret, and have a younger sister named Judy. My father was your mom's brother .. his name was Hubert. You should also have had an Uncle Doug and Aunt Clara, and also had aunt named Peggy that died when she was young. You should also have a cousin named Rita. I may have some of this mixed up but I think that's right. If this is not you, sorry I took up your time. Best wishes, Ross

With further checking, I have found that Harold was Harold Robert Oakes. He is not the same person but appears to be from the same community. Hope the other info helps.

I found Royal Oakes on the 1920 census in Jefferson. He was a boarder. Also a boarder in the same househould was James Oakes. Royal's occupation was difficult to read, but all the boarders seem to have jobs with the railroad.

I found Royal's death in 4/1974. Shows birth as 6/13/1886. Last known address was 13036 Central Square, Oswego, New York.

On the 1900 census, I found a Harold R. Oakes in a household in Jefferson with his parents Robert and Cora. Shows Harold R's occupation as a railroad clerk. Age is about the same.

Found a Harold R. Oakes in Brooklyn in 1930 with wife, Grace, and son, Robert. Occupation is attorney. May be the same person.

There is also a Royal Oakes on some records born in Illinois. Doesn't appear to be the same person.

Hope this helps.
