Classification: Query
Surnames: Oates/Oats, Walker, Murray, Laffelle/LaFaille, Middleton, Robertson
Edward Oats, born 1736 (or there abouts) somewhere in Pennsylvania to John and Francis Susan Reid Oats, died on his plantation on Daniels Island, Berkely County, SC 3/15/1780. Because he was Charleston's Vendue Master, he traded with the British - and he continued to do it through the Revolution. His lands were confiscated after his death, and then returned to his widow about 1785. His confiscated property consisted of his plantation on Daniels Island, and two tenement houses in Colleton-Square, Charleston. He was married twice. We do not know the name of his first wife. Their children were

(1) Marjory Corbett Oats born about 1757
m Patrick Murray 9/22/1774 in Charleston, SC
We have no clue what happened to this couple.

(2) Mary Oates born about 1759
m Nicholas Laffelle or LaFaille 9/17/1775 in Charleston, SC. This MIGHT be the LaFaille family out of Canada.

(3) Edward Jr. born about 1761
M Catherine?
1790 Census lists Edward living alone with 6 slaves.
Evidently he married after 1790.
They had a child - Edward H. Oates about 1792

(4) Charles Oates born about 1764
m Mary Middleton 9/8/1788 in Charleston.
1790 Census lists Charles with his wife and daughter.
Ann Oates was born 4/8/1792
She married Thomas Davis 7/12/1812

The marriages were found in the records of an Episcopal Church in St. Peter and St. Pauls Parrish, Charleston, SC.

Then Edward Sr. married Elizabeth Walker and they had one child that we know of, Elizabeth Oates born about 1770. We know nothing more of Elizabeth Walker Oates other than she married after 1785 and before 1790. We know nothing of Elizabeth Oates the daughter.

It had been assumed by our family that Edward was not mentioned in his father's will because he was a loyalist. However, John Oates died in 1778, which is just at the beginning of the War. I think he isn't in his father's will because he had a lot more money than his father and he didn't need it.

Edward Oats Junior is mentioned in the will of James Robertson or Robinson, who was an executor of Edward Oats, Sr.'s will. James Robertson or Robinson died in 1781, I think.
