Oberg's from Sweden

My ggrandparents were Oberg, Jacob Johan (b: 1846) and Johanna Elizabeth (Ring)Oberg(b: 1852). They immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Isphemming,Marquette, Michigan, where their children were born. Jacob was killed working in the iron mines there and Johanna Elizabeth remarried Engberg, homesteading in the Kansas Territory in Morris County, Marian Hill. There gravestones as Engberg's are located in the graveyard of the Lutheran Church, set on a windy hill.

When tracing ancestors to Sweden, make note of the fact that all of the Swedish emmigrants departed from Gothenberg; hence, all emmigration records are retained there -- in Swedish!

There seems to have been quite a few Oberg families in Worcester. I've found a few through the usual searches, but none that match those names.
Keep on pluggin', though. Keep posting on any message boards you can find. Everything I have found out about my family came from 'bumping into' people online who turned out to be relatives!

Hi Rick,
No, I don't know anything else. My friend Marcie is having a second battle with cancer and her husband Richard Oberg seems as if he may have had a stroke at one time. It is very importand for both of them that I find info on his family.
He did try to tell me stories about someone who was in the California Gold Rush.........John Oberg and one who rode with Roosevelts Rough Riders. But no specifics on anything. I would like to help them.
There is also a Chsrlotte Nelson and a great great aunt, Assarina-Sven Nilson.
It would be great if you could help but if not bless you for trying. It's not easy as I have found out looking for my own family.
If you do find something, use my e-mail address.

shopam@core.com.............Thank you much...........Pam

Hello, I am searching for the Oberg family for a friend of mine, Richard Oberg. His parents were Arnold Raymond Oberg and Dorthea Frasier. He doesn't know much about his family.
He was told that his grandparents came over from Sweden and they had 10 children. The children ended up in an orphanage in Mass. Also that one of his ancestors rode with Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. Other Oberg names I have are:

Carl Axel Leopold Oberg
Alma Gustafson
Clifford Knut Oberg
Clarense Herbert Oberg
Arnold Raymond Oberg
Edgar Gustof Russel Oberg
Agnes Linnes Oberg
Kenneth Willian Oberg
Melonie Lincoln Oberg
Rena Anita Oberg

I realize these are just bits and pieces but I really would like to help Richard and his brother Brian out.

God Bless Always
Pam

It was very cool just checking them out, and actually gave me some ideas about tracking down my own folk. (Would have never thought about searching Ebay! LOL!!)
Thanks again!

The whole "where's Aland" issue actually played a role in keeping me from making any progress with my lineage search for years. It wasn't until I bumped into someone else on this message board (my previously-unknown-to-me cousin, Mary) that my grandfather has changed his name (slightly) when he came to the US, and that he was from Aland. It also helped explain why he always claimed to be Swedish, having been born in Sweden, but his death certificate said Finland. With that info, I went from knowing nothing of my family beyond my grandfather, to quickly finding out my family tree back to about 1750!
Amazing how a piece or two can solve a huge puzzle.

Trying to locate where in Sweden my ancestors came from and when and what ship they arrive in the U. S. On the 1870 census of Sugar Grove, Pa Henry Ober (the G is not list) is 77 years old and list as being at home. Augustus, 48, is a farmer; Carolina (sic) is 50 and keeping house;
Christina, my great grandmother is 21 and married to John Lawson. Hulda is 14 and at school. Since all were listed as being born in Sweden, I presume they immigrated after 1856. Most Swedes in the area were from Smaland. My surname comes from Hassleby,
Smaland. Lawson were from Pelarne and Lonnberga, Kalmar, Smaland. Can anyone help me?

We are looking for any information on John William and Alma Oberg and their descendents. Both were born in New York City, NY, John William on Oct. 3, 1908 and Alma approx. in 1912. Their parents emigrated from Finland: Jakob Selim Oberg (born July 21, 1881 in Uusikaupunki, Finland), and Mary Laakso (born approx. in 1880 in Alajarvi, Finland).
We have found them in the US census information for 1910, 1920, and 1930, and are looking for any information after that.
Any suggestions on where to look for further information would also be very much appreciated.

I have alot of info on this family, however the records that I have show his name to be Joseph Friederic Oberg Born May 13, 1879 in Stonyhill, MO and died Nov 11, 1933 in Hermann, MO.He married Laura Jones during childbirth. They had children: Verena, Ezra, Raymond and Mabel.
According to research given to me:
After Laura's death in childbirth, Joseph brought his family back to Stonyhill, MO where Lydia Becker Oberg, wife of his brother, Willie, cared for them especially the baby Mabel. About 1913, joseph married Lydia. Joe and Lydia had two children, Tillie and Oliver. Joseph and Lydia are both buried in Bethany Church Cemetary.
Email ma at Ladyscoop@aol.com if I can be of more help.
He first appeared in the 1870 census in the household of Andrew Fletcher, Clay County, MO. Then married Sarah Elizabeth BAKER 1 Dec 1974 in Collin County, TX. They had four children, three living to marry. John Nelson died 9 Feb 1926 in Anna, Collin County, TX.

If you have any record of John Nelson SANSTROM please let me know.

Oberg family photos for sale at ebay ~ please look to see if your line
Hello,

I've been surfing ebay this morning and I cannot ignore the amount of family pictures there are for sale with the Oberg surname. I am not connected to the seller or ebay in any way, I just hate to see family pictures not in the possession of family.

The Oberg pictures are absolutely beautiful and a handsome family. I am hoping you will take the time to look at them and perhaps recognize them as your line.

Burnett and Hal Oberg
6151803884

Forgot to write down name(s)
6151804885

Otto and Alma Oberg
6151810616

Otto, Charlie, Gust, Augusta Oberg
6151811452

Otto, Charlie, Gust, John Oberg brothers
6151819525

Burnett and Erickson (no surname)
6151805979

I don't know if the surname Cedergren ties into the Ober surname or not, but for sale by the same person

Mr. Mrs. Cedergren
Cherry Valley
6151815655

Cedergren
6151809578

Then there is one
Julia West cousin of Alma and Tillie-Tullie-Tullis?
6151812468

Tillie
6151816624

There could be more with the Oberg name, had not completely finished looking at what was there. If I remember correctly no one has placed a bid on any of these pictures. So please take a look the pictures are very clear. Would love to know that family has obtained them. You can copy and paste the numbers below the names and paste them right in the search box on the ebay screen that comes up if you are not familiar with ebay.

Most of the photos have a DeKalb, Illinois studio embossed on the paper frame part.

Thanks Deborah

We found a 1920 Census listing for a John Oberg in Kingston Township, Meeker County, MN. It lists a John Oberg married to a Mary with children named Clifford, Esther, Olga and Adolph. Does anyone know anything about this family? We are trying to see if there is a connection to our John Ernest Oberg born 1867 in Sweden but grew up in Jamestown, NY. He left home at 17 and went missing as he wandered across country ending up in Salem, OR in 1923. He died in 1939 at age 72.
oberg minnesota

I am searching for any information on John Oberg pos. b.3-5-1886 and Hilda (Larson) Oberg b.1885. Both were born in Sweden. Pos. 1903 immigration. Lived in Quamba, Kanabec county, Minnesota between 1909 & 1921 that I know. They had 6 children during that time; Linnea J. b. 1909, Viola G. b. 1912, Reinold b. unknown, Russel R. b. 1915, Tense E. b. 1919, & Fritchof Olaf b.1921-d.1986 (my father). I have only found some of the childrens birth cert. and my fathers death cert. Any information would be helpful since my father did not have any contact w/ siblings and the story that Hilda Oberg died of cancer and husband John commited suicide soon after, is vague and quite the mystery. Thank You.

Re: Oberg

I just read your query about the missing "g". Here is what Ive seen and decided on missing letters.

1st: there is the mispelling theory. People just misspelled names especially the harder names. If your ancestor immigrated they had to give thier name to someone every step they took, mispelling just happened.

2nd theory: Accents. O-b-e-r-g may have sounded like "Ober" hence the spelling.

I dont know that any of this is accurate or true, but it is the little known truth inside my mind. Ya know? Thought Id give you my input. Thanks for listening.

Shelly
