Obst, Ernst, arrival 1903

Ernst Obst, born 27 May 1882. Entered US from Russia via Ellis Island 15 Apr 1903 aboard The Albano. Per Hamburg emmigration records was to join brother-in-law, Albert Shaube, in NYC. Wife, Bertha Quetschlich (born 19 May 1875), and baby daughter, Olga (31 Dec 1902), followed 5 months later (arrival 24 May 1903) aboard SS Blucher to Ellis, NYC. Per immigration records last residence was Lippin (cannot find this city in old maps). Bertha listed Rubon as last residence.

Cannot find the city names in any old maps. European territories under much change during this time. Since baby's name was Olga (tradition in Russia for children to have Russian names), I assume the info I have that they came from Russia to be correct.

Family moved from NY to Elizabeth, NJ prior to the 1910 census. Had 9 children (latter 8 born here): Olga, Gustav, Ernest, Elizabeth (died at birth?), Wilhelmina, William, Martha, Joseph, & Henry (died at birth?).

Ellis records show Ernst was a blacksmith. He owned a tavern in NJ. Per family stories, Bertha had a sister, Ida Simon (from France), and two brothers, Paul and Henry (both of Germany).

Only reference to Albert Shaube shows him as a ship's captain and his wife Mary (do NOT know if this is Ernst's sister) travelled with him as a ship's mate.

Any information to any of these surnames or localities would be greatly appreciate. My search of this branch has stalled pending more info. Thanks.

Posting about Obst being married to McCurdy

Pete Obst (Philadelphia) married my aunt Pearl McCurdy. They had two sons Frederick Peter and Frank.......Pearl divorced Pete Obst and remarried Wilfred Henon. Pearl is still alive and lives in Wissonoming here in Phila. Her son Frederick (known as Pete) was married to a woman named Orla Ria, she died a few years ago and he is now remarried. Pearl's other son Frank lives in Philadelphia and is married to a "Betty" they have daughters Helene, Peggy, Beth and Cris. I think this is the "McCurdy" connection that you are looking for. When Pete Obst and Pearl were married, they lived in Germantown, here in Philadelphia. If I can give you any more information, just email me at above address. I also knew Szewack's from Germantown from St. Francis of Assisi. Good luck in your search. Ginny McCurdy Clark......

Hi Betty, sure do know who Reginald Wray was. He is my cousin. He is a doctor living in Oregon. His father and my mother are brother and sister. It is a small world. I'll call Aunt Pearl and see if I can get some more information for you. As for Szweick (sorry can't spell it) there is a Szwazk buried next to my father in Our Lady of Grace Cemetery in Trevose. Figured it was from the family in Germantown. Such a different name. Kathleen was just here for Thanksgiving, and believe it or not we were talking about the one who used to work for Harry and about you (if you are the right Betty). We played on the computer that
whole week she was here. They are living in Fort Myers Beach Florida and she came up for a week to see my Mom (who was here) Kathleen is one of those women who got lupus from breast implants, and is suing but has yet to receive money. Her youngest Mark will have his first baby this month some time. Kathleen spoke fondly of all of you and we talked about the connection to the Obst family. It's just so incredible to be discussing it and then me finding you on the message board. Aunt Pearl is 80 and in very frail health (almost completely blind from Macular Degeneration. I will call her and see what information I can get from her for you and will put it on your message board. Reginald Wray is still a hunk but his hairs all white now! (ha) "talk" on computer with you soon. P.S. I married Johnny Clark who lived on Wakefield Street in Germantown, he knows the Szwizaks too. He used to hang in Nicoletti's store at Wister and Wakefield....
My email is Beerman4933@aol.com
See you

A little more

When Aunt Pearl was married to Pete Obst they lived for a time on Tacoma Street, I think with Pete's mother. When Pete and Pearl broke up, Frank (Pete Pearl's youngest son) wanted to stay with his father and lived with the grandmother for awhile. If Aunt Pearl doesn't remember I'm sure Frank will, I'll give him a call. Frank is a catholic because he went to St. Francis for a few years, his brother Pete is not though. When Aunt Pearl got married again Frank went to live with her, and neither brother saw their father for many years. Last I heard and this was awhile ago, young Pete's daughter was getting married and Pete Obst came to wedding, young Pete helped his dad out until he died I think. I never met the elder Pete, I wasn't even born when Aunt Pearl was with Pete. One of the brothers drowned near the Tacony Bridge years ago, he was fishing with another brother. I remember that because my dad knew the Obst family real well (he was friends with Pete)
I think I knew your brother Joe from school, he was ahead of me in school but we had the same friends. I didnt know him personally, but knew of him. I attended a wedding (I think it was yours) at St. Francis. We went to the church to see you get married, if that was you, you got married in a pretty little suit? Kathleen and I walked down to the church to see you get married. I sent Kathleen's son an email telling about your email, so he's going to let her and Harry know that I heard from you. She did say ( I think it was Joe) and family lived in an apartment at the shop on Green Lane? for awhile. If the Szewczak that's buried next to my dad (Beverly McCurdy) is a relation, it really is a small world. My dad knew everyone. Too bad he's not here because he'd have all the information you'd want to know, but I will call Aunt Pearl and Frankie to see what I can find out.. Ginny

He had a sister, Anna (1868-1958), who married John Lang. I don't show a Dobschutz in my researches. Ferdinand Obst, Sr. (1836-1909) came to America from Weitenhagen, Greifswald, Germany. I don't have a record of any siblings, so there might be a link there.

By any chance does anyone have any information on a married woman from Prussia named Henrietta Caroline Walther (or von Walther/walter, unknown maiden name) who's son Albert Walther 1856-1920 married an Elizabeth M Obst 1860-1960. Elizabeth's parents were Augustine J. Obst 1826-1891 and Abigail Casey 1837-1900 also from Prussia I am told. This is a large family. Joseph Obst was a relative and I know he died in the County of Hillsboroogh, Florida. However, most of the family seems to have resided in the MA, CT, RI area. Anything you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Since this is the only board where I have found the Obst name, I thought I'd list what I know.

My husband's father, Frederick J. Obst, born 7/11/1911 in Atlanta, GA; died July, 1961, and long-time resident of Philadelphia, PA was one of four sons and one daughter of Anna Obst (maiden name unknown) and ? Obst. We do not currently have information on Fred's father's name or background; I believe he died while the children were young and none of them seem to remember him.

The children of Anna Obst were:

SON: Fred Obst - married to Teresa M. Martini in Philadelphia; four children as follows:

Jane Obst - married to Hunter Snapp (three children, Michelle, Andrew and Kimberly Snapp and seven grandchildren).

Charles Obst - married to Mary Neusome (six daughters, Teri, Jeri, Toni, Joni, Ree and Lee and twelve grandchildren).

Fred Obst, Jr. - married to Margaret Schenk (seven children, Richard, Fred, Brian, Desiree, Robin, Karen and Adam and seventeen grandchildren).

William J. Obst - married to Betty L. Szewczak (two children, William and Elizabeth and two grandchildren).

DAUGHTER: Rose Obst married to Joe Smallburger; lived in New Jersey. Had about five or six children, at least one of which was a daughter.
SON: Alfred Obst - was married (maybe to a McCurdy?) and I think he had two sons; he's now deceased.

SON: Pete Obst - married to Velma ?; no children; now deceased.

SON: Charles - married to Jane Martini; two children, Gloria and Marie; grandchildren unknown. Charles is now deceased.

SON: Richard - married to Betty ?; five children; Richard, Betty Anne, Tommy, Diane and a son (can't remember his name). Grandchildren unknown.

I can provide additional information to anyone that is interested. Please advise if you have any background information on the Obst name, particularly in the Atlanta, Philadelphia of New Jersey areas which may be of help. Thanks!!

Obst-McCurdy connection

Hi Ginnie: Thanks for the reply. I didn't have your email address so decided to respond on-line.

I spoke with my husband and he agrees that it was Pete Obst that married Pearl. Bill I both knew Kathleen McCurdy from St. Francis (she was a year behind me in school); in fact, we saw a lot of her later, after she married Harry Kobie. We both worked for Kobie at one time and my brother, Joe Szewczak, worked for Harry for a very long time when he had his shop up on Green Lane. I also had a brother Rudy and a sister, Anne (we call her Angie) Szewczak. Which one of us did you know? My husband is Bill Obst, the youngest of the family of Fred Teresa Obst of Tacoma St. He also went to St. Francis'.

Do you have any additional information on the background of the Obst family? Bill can't remember what his father's name was or what his grandmother's (Anna Obst) maiden name was or where either of them were born. Any information would be appreciated.

By the way, I looked at other postings you had made and found an email address of beerman4933@aol.com. Is this still current for you? It's funny, but I note in your posting for Joseph Gamble Wray, that we may have another connection as well. I used to date a boy called Reginald Wray. He lived on a street that ran parallel to Germantown AVe., on the east side. What a small world!

Hi Ginny:

My husband, Bill's family, lived on Tacoma Street (Teresa Fred Obst); that's where Bill his brothers sister were raised. Bill's grandmother (Fred Pete's mother) lived on Garfield Street. Fred is the one who drowned in the Delaware River, but he didn't have a brother with him at the time; they were strangers he had met at the club.
I had no idea you had attended our wedding; it was in 1958 and I did wear a suit. Sally Walsh (now Clemmer) was my bridesmaid. Who are the friends that you and my brother Joeie knew? I'll pass the information on to him.

If your Dad is buried in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, it could very well be my Mom and Dad that are buried next to him. Their names were Rudolph (Rudy) and Rosemary Szewczak.

Please let us know if your Aunt Pearl or Frankie have any more information for us. Thanks for all your help. If you'd like, you can email me direct from now on, at betty.obst@skycon.com.

Anne:
My son, Bill, who lives in Memphis, TN was recently contacted by Gregory J. Bannister (bannister_gregory_j@jpmorgan.com). He contacted him through a mutual friend, Tim Drum. It appears that Mr. Bannister (goes by the name of "Craig" found a "cover" (I think this has to do with stamp collecting) cancelled from the USS Fall River in 1946 which was addressed to a Fred Obst in Meriden, CT. He wanted to know if my son was any relation. I don't know if this will be of any use but hey, I look under any stone I find. Good luck!

NYC Census - Obst in CT

Hi Anne:
I presume you're referring to the data I posted in regard to an inquiry by "Jenkins". I'm sure I found the data on the NY census records of 1920 while I was in Salt Lake City at the Church of Latter Day Saints Genealogy Center. They have centers nationwide where you can access this information. You can also check several sites on line. Probably best bets are Cindy's List, Rootsweb.com, Ancestry.com

I also responded to you yesterday in regard to your inquiry on an Obst in CT. That had nothing to do with the census but was based on a recent inquiry to my son from someone who is a stamp collector and who had a "cover" stamp? addressed to Fred Obst in CT from a US Ship in 1946. I gave you his email address.

7 Obst brothers/sisters and spouses migrated to South Australia in the 1840's. there are many, many descendants all recorded in a book with photographs etc. the earliest one we have is my GGGgrandfather Johann Gottlieb Obst from Merschwitz, near Liepzig, Silesia, Prussia. This May be of benefit to others searching their origins. Regards Heather. My email is kenyonheather@hotmail.com

Her mother, Johanne Christiane Friedricke Rauch, is the sister of my ggg grandfather, Henry Rauch, and has been one of my "mysteries."

I think the dates are off, but to tell the truth I know very little about the Obsts. I only have that part of the family back to Frederich August Obst born abt 1823 somewhere in Germany. He married Theresa Reidel. Daughter Anna Obst was born in Germany in 1853. Son Frederick August born 1844 Polnish Lissa. I don't know if they had had brothers/sisters or when they came to NY. I know death for Theresa Reidel Obst > NY 1899, but not for Frederich (father)- perhaps he died in Germany she came with children and/or other relative ??? Frederich(son) was married there, NY, in 1884. He Margaretha had 5 children - 3 girls, Emma b. 1885, Juliana b. 1887 Christine b. 1895 who all stayed in NY, They had 2 sons Ferdinand Frederich b. 1889 d. 1952? place unknown, Henry Bernard b. 1898 d. 1957 - place unknown. I don't know if this fits -- ther may have been other children in the 2nd generation I don't know about. ljj5@yahoo.com

Her Father was MICHAEL OBST (born in NY) and her mother REBINKA RACHEL OBST (born in Brooklyn, NY - maiden name DAVIS). Michael was a cigar maker. She had one sister, Evelyn Obst (never married) Both my grandmother and her sister resided in Brooklyn, NY for most of their lives.
Thomas, I do not have specific information. I too am looking for an Obst, he would be my daughter's natural grandfather or grandmother. I am looking to obtain a health history. We do not know any first names, but I do believe this person would have been born in the early 1900's and lived or traveled to New London Conn, or near abouts. I wish you luck in your search. Do not give up. I found my Grandfather's relatives in Germany and will be meeting them for the first time this June. We are now seeking information on another of his brothers who emigrated to Argentina and Died in Brazil....this is a heavy duty search!
Again, good luck!

Hi,

I have no ancestor with this name in my pedigree (until now). Maybe further research can bring such a connection.

Do you have more information about your grandfather (date of birth, place of birth, ...)?

greetings Hannes
