And he did live in Denmark. This Oby's family came from Copenhaguen, I think. But did you know? Their surname wasn't Oby when they were born, their surname was Jensen. As it was too common, they decided to buy 'Oby' as a surname. That's what my grand-father's brother told me

Hello Melva! Ulrich Oby was indeed the father of Irene Oby. Irene would marry Frank Leibel, the eldest brother of my grandmother Irene Leibel Watson. Irene lived in Spokane for more than 30 years - hard to imagine the photos getting away from her, though.
Anyway, if these photos are still unclaimed, I would love to claim them!

I am looking for info in Oby family from Mississippi. My father's mother's people are Oby's. I know that they settled in Mississippi From Haiti. They lived in the Cleveland or Clarksdale, MS area.

Ulrich Oby (1847-1911)

I purchased two old pictures of an Oby family (not related to me) in a thrift store in Spokane, Washington.

One of the pictures, taken about 1900, is of Ulrich Oby (1847-1911), his wife Elisa Marti (1852- ?), and their children Earnest G., Eliza, Herman J., Walter, Lena and Charles. All were born in Switzerland and came to America in 1889. All are identified on the back.

The second is of a 1923 Business College class (apparently in Minnesota) in which Irene Oby is identified. She was a daughter of Earnest.

I've also gathered some information about the family from census records and the like, and created a small Oby file in Family TreeMaker.

I would be glad to share these.

I hate to see old pictures go unclaimed. I'm wondering how they came to be in Spokane; there are no Obys in our phone book.

my mothers family were oby's/obey's. they were from louisiana. ludelia oby/george obey/simmie oby and lena oby who was my grand mother. my mothers name was o.d. newton. she was born in mississippi 1921. in 1930 she was living with her grandfather george oby. in the same year her mother lena oby was in arkansa she was married to andy quarles with a son name james quarles. if any of these names ring a bell please write back.

If you check the census records for the birth years in question, you will find this info under the name of Ely Lenior.
Sorry, that would be the Virginia census. Ely is listed as the head of household.

I have a brother by the name of Roy Oby, so far, he's the only one that I can find in Louisiana. There is however a "Ray" Oby. I can't contact him either, but I did talk to his wife over the phone. She had no information. Check the internet phone book and you may find him.

I have read the message trail on the Oby family. I'm also tracing this family. I'd be interested to know your source information for the births of Joel and Brussell (Bernard). How do you know there were four sons? I have only heard of William Henry (?) in addition to the other two. Any information on the source of this interesting data would be gratefully received.

Frances' age I got from the 1880 census GA. She was listed as 90 years old and bedridden. She was living with her son Brussel at the time. John Oby,my cousin, Baton Rouge LA has told me about the extensive amount of research you have compiled. I have been working on the family history for several years now. I would like to share information with you.

I am also reseaching the Oby family. which orginatedin VA with Frances Oby( born 1790) who had three sons, Joel, Bernard and William Oby. Joel migrated to TX. Bernard moved to GA and his descendants to LA where my father, Chester Oby Jr. was born.
Joel was born 1825 in Richmond VA and died 1882- Marlin TX. His son Joseph Ralph Oby was born 1853 in Charleston Mississippi and died 1914 in Marlin TX His grandsons, your uncles-Sherman Oby b.1896 Marlin TX and died 1921 Marlin TX and James Jim Oby was born 1892 in Marlin TX.
My cousins and I are in the process of linking the OBY families from TX, LA, OK and GA. I would be happy to share any other information that will be useful to you. I am using Family Tree Maker to store datafiles. Who are your grandparents?
