William M. Odum, b. 1849 Virginia, d. 1889 (?)

I am seeking information about my great-grandfather, William M. Odum. William married Ellen Jane Bridgeman in Washington County, VA. Sometime after 1880, William, Ellen and their children headed west with the intention of settling in Oklahoma. Two different sources have named William as being murdered during a train robbery, and being buried in Little Rock, Arkansas. Thereafter, Ellen and most of the children returned to Virginia; a few children remained in the Arkansas/Oklahoma area. If anyone has information regarding how William met his end and/or where he is buried, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has photos of these kinfolk and would be willing to share, please scan the photo in .jpg, .gif or .pdf format and email the photo file to: celtinore@gmail.com. Thanks very much!

Hello cousin. Have been looking for same John I think. Found 1870 John and Peggy with son Ambson (my Ambrose I think) Last name spelled Oldham! Also in 1880 my Ambros was with mother and father Jon R. Odham and mother Margaret. and his mother Manerva J born in Tn. Now I am trying to find what name really was and where they were before Dist 1 Jackson Co. on these census.

I have a picture of my father standing with Bedford's statue of himself in the cemetery. Taken before digital. When I find it I will send you a copy.

Linda Odum Tidwell, Daughter of James W Odum, Grand daughter of Perry Odum

Looking for any information on the Charles C. Odum family. Charles was born Feb of 1939 poss in Albany, Georgia and died August 5, 2007 in Leesburg, FL. He was married to Dorothy Ann Reynolds (her maiden name was Reynolds but she was married to a Kenneth SNYDER before marrying Charles Odum so the marriage license might be in the SNYDER surname). I have been told he has a sister living in Georgia but I have no information on her nor any other family members.

If you have any information, I would appreciate it.

I May have some info on John Dempsey for you. Look up decendents of Moses Odum (Kerby,s Creek, NC)>Wiley Odum(TN)>
married Sarah Kitchen and had sons Britton (my ggg grand father), Dempsey,Moses and Thomas A. one daughter Elizabeth.
Dempsey married Sarah Jordan and moved to Illinois and they had 12 Children. William C, Ann, *Moses(who married Mary Fry), Jane, James K.,Rachael,Martha,Nancy, Caroline,Ridley,Lucy.
Moses and Mary Fry Odum had 8 children the first of whom was John D. (may be your Dempsey)born about 1846. The other children were Emily,Sarah, Jacob,Nancy Martha, David, and Joshua. My great GF was a Dempsey also. Seems that parents named their children after brothers and uncels, so the same names got passed down from generation to generation. Makes it confusing?? but we might be on the right track. If this seems right to you, I would like to know more about your John D. Odum.
Hope this helps.
You can e-mail me at dono415@bellsouth.net
Sincerely
Don Odum

My Dear Cousin, Where have you BEEN! This is the sort of information I've been looking for from someone who knows! (Pay no attention to that sound. It's just the Aunts turning over in the graveyard just down the road.)

I was well aware that Granddaddy Shon, Uncle Walter and Miss Vic's other children were base born. In fact my information shows that they married in Oct. of 1902 and Godfrey died in Feb.of 1904. As you no doubt know, there are other children...........

Hey Cuz. Let's take this to private email. Is that ok? I try to be sensitive about all this because there's lots more where this came from and I would never want to hurt or offend anyone. In fact, I've been so cautious and that is why I can't get details such as you just gave me. My thinking is that these are my folks - this is my heritage. They were real people with real lives and I want to "know" them as they were. I think the real people were much more complex and interesting than what has been made up about them. My email is lodum3@comcast.net. Do write me. I want to hear what you know. I'm so glad I haven't offended you by inquiring about this.

Cousin Linda

Dear Cousin Linda,

Grandma Victoria's (Miss Vic, Godfrey's wife) children were all born out of wedlock. Miss Vic insisted that Godfrey marry her. By insist, I mean at gunpoint when all the boys were teen-agers. She and the boys 'escorted' him the city hall in Jessup. There they become legally one happy family.

Inez was the daugher of one of the sons other that Walter. I think her father may have been Uncle Shon. THis is enough of our 'tangled' family history for now. I'll send more later.

Cousin Walt

Dear Cousin Walt, OH! More FAMILY! How wonderful! I can't tell you how pleased I am to have found you! I sound like I don't have a relative in the world which is not the case. Between Daddy's family, the Odum's and Mama's, the Copeland's I have more cousins, aunts and uncles than I can count. Of course, I have a husband Ray, son Randy, daughter Rachel, son-in-law Kyle and granddaughters Meg and Kaity. Still, it is a thrill for me to find another one of "my people" and his family who are also my people. I cherish family - more as I grow older.

I will check the information shortly and see if I can find Inez. Just wanted to touch base with you first. Who is she and what was her maiden name? I don't know how much you know of our family history but it is - h'mmm -'tangled' and to me, utterly fascinating. We know little about Granddaddy Godfrey's chilren other than our Grandfather Mershon (Shon) Odum, except some of the names. Are you interested in sharing and hearing details of what we both do know or do you just need to know about Inez?

In any case I am delighted to have found you and will go now and check on her. I'll get back with you shortly.

Nice to meet you too!

Cousin Linda

Please tell me anything you want to share. This is exciting to perhaps have found yet another cousin. We may be able to fill in some missing links for each other.

If we are on the same page, your father practiced medicine in Wayne County and his picture is on the wall of Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup, Ga. which is our county seat. He greatly resembles his father, Godfrey. Thank you so much for writing. I'll be looking forward to hearing from you and will be pleased to tell you anything I know.

Cousin Linda

Not sure if I can be of help but the name and location caught my attention and there are several Walters in my Odum heritage.

I am Linda Odum Reynolds from Odum, Ga. which is about 70 miles from Savannah. My grandfather was Mershon Odum and my great grandfather was Godfrey Odum for whom out little town is named. One of Godfrey's sons was named Walter M. Odum and he became a doctor. He died in 1937. He had a son, Dr.Walter M. Odum, Jr. who was a professor in a college in Virginia at that time. My information stops at that point on that part of the family. One of my first cousins is also named Walter.

Can you find a connection in this? If so, I have a good amount of documented family history and would be glad to share. I'm always pleased to find more family and hear their stories.

Thanks, Art! I have some records I got at Al. State Archives but they are very hard to read. I now see that it says Oak Fields, FL. I don't find anything on them to indicate that he was captured, tho. Do you have the Co. Records? I am wondering why he never drew a pension? He lived intil 1924 and died here in AL. At least, I have not found a pension record on him. The AL Archives had a card on pensions but it said to check with FL. I have not done that. I do not think that he lived in FL. My grandmother was born in Walton Co., GA and they all came to AL from there, so I have been told. I guess I have more research to do. But I really do appreciate your help!
Brenda Gilbert ABBOTT
