Hi, my name is Judy Oehler. I have recently returned to Biloxi MS after living in Oklahoma for a dozen years, but James Andrew Oehler Jr and Sam lived out their days here in MS. I am Jimmy's daughter, the granddaughter of James Andrew Oehler Sr. Sam was my uncle. I believe Milas was my greatgrandfather and George was his brother. Both James Senior and Sam are buried in Biloxi on Gorenflo Rd in the cemetary that is on land that was my childhood home. Sam's daughter Elaine is still here. Carolyn is buried with her father as well. I am on my way to see my oldest sister Muriel who I believe has the contact information for Elaine. I will let you know. My email is judyoehler@aol.co
My parents, James Andrew Jr and my mother Edna Lewis Oehler aare buried in the Biloxi cemetary with my two brothers, James Lewis Oehler and Jerry Oehler. My dad Jimmy was born in 1912 and was very close to Uncle Sam who died when I was young.
Jimmy and Sam's last surviving sister, Mary Jane Oehler Choice, recently passed away in Leavenworth, KS. I am in touch with those cousins too. More later when I hear back from you! Judy

I've dug around a bit and can't find any information on an Maria Anna Oehler in my family tree.

The closest relative I can find with a similar name is Johann's mother, Anna Marie.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more help.

Hi Denise,

I just noticed your query and wondered if you found out anything yet. I was curious for you, because I, too, have ancestors named Charles Oehler, so I started doing some preliminary searching for you. So far, I've been able to trace your g-g-father,"Charlie" Oler back to Harris, Texas in 1900. The census says he was born Jan. 1867 in IL, as were both of his parents. Of course, other censuses have slight variations to the birthplace themes, but IL seems pretty consistent. I do have much more information for you post-1900, but wasnt' sure if you have already found it since you posted this email in August. If you do need more, please let me know.

Regards, Aine

PS. My g-g father, Charles G, was born in 1862, in Germany, ended up in IL. It's a small world!

My grandfather was Charles G. Oler, a fair-skinned black man. His sisters were Mable, Iris, and Blanche. He had 10 children, yet he named my mother after himself. My siblings and I have been told for many years that my great-great grandfather was a white man and that the German spelling of his name was changed to Oler. Can someone give me an idea of how to research further? Does anyone know more about the African American connection to the Oehlers? My grandparents, Charles and Mary and his sisters ended up in Houston, Texas
Denise

Just started working on the Oehler family today. Interested because there is a connection between the Oehler family and the Bross families in Hamilton Co.. Looks like one of the Bross daughters (Agatha b. 1822) married a Josef Oehler in Germany. They were from the Schutterwald/Offenburg area. Perhaps the Bross and Oehler families are connected in other ways. Sylvester Oehler's grand-daughter Rosa married Charles Bross abt. 1878 and are intered in St. James Cemetery, Ham. Co.

Hi, List!

I'm looking for a Jacob Oehler, son of Ambrose, who was born in Dubuque County, IA in about 1842. (Never mind that in all censuses, he reports that he was born in Ohio. He was definitely born in Iowa.)

He and wife Catherine appear in Table Mound Twp in Dubuque County, IA on the 1870 census with three children. Then everybody has disappeared by 1880.

Anybody out there know of this family?

There was a Jacob Oehler who was married in Allamakee County in 1878. Could these have been one and the same, Catherine having died in the mean-time?

Thanks for any information.

EB

Oehler from Prussia in IA? OH?

Hi. I'm searching for Ambrose Oehler born in about 1847. (This is not the Ambrose Oehler of Delhi/Delaware, Iowa family.)

I have found an Ambrose "AILER" in the Jackson County, Iowa, 1870 census. This is the right time and the right place. And this Ambrose is listed as a wagon-maker, as *my* Ambrose was. They are nearly identical in age. And I believe a census-taker would not be able to spell Oehler, and the inn-keeper where Ambrose was staying could not spell it either, probably.

That said, do any of you have connections with this Ambrose?

The census lists him as coming from Prussia. From which port would a Prussian have emigrated?

I'll share any information I have. Thanks! EB

Hi! When I do a search on Ancestry.com for OEHLER in the Ohio censuses, it comes up with three OEHLERs. That's impossible! There was an Oehler Street in Cincinnati!

Where are they all, or what am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any ideas. EB

OEHLERs hiding in 1850 IA census!

Hi, List! I went to the nat'l archives this morning, and found the two Ambrose OEHLERs I've been looking for.

Dubuque County, Dist. #7, p7?p11?. Father's name has been indexed as Abrais OEHLEEN; and that's exactly what it looks like on the census. He is mispelled on the next two censuses as well, and his son Ambrose (listed as "Ambois" in the 1850 census) appears as Ambrose AILER in the 1870 census in Jackson County! No wonder this is such a challenge!

Hope this will help someone. EB

Hello, Oehler Folks!

This fellow is indexed as O Ehler, as is Ambrose Oehler, a few lines down from Sylvester, in the Green Twp, Hamilton County Ohio 1840 census. Both were born in Germany.

I'm a direct descendant of Ambrose. I wonder if anybody on this list knows what became of Sylvester. He appears again in 1850 with a Mary of the appropriate age to be his wife. Who knows? And an older woman, Kathrine Stocke or Stucher, also born in Germany-- perhaps Mary's mother?

I'd like to find someone working on Sylvester, since I'm not able to take my Ambrose back farther than Hamilton County Ohio, 1840.

Thanks. And happy rooting!

Ellen Oehler Blackstone

Hi, If you want to contact me, please feel free. David Franklin Oehler was my grandfather. Robert Oehler was one of the older children in a big (very spread out family, some of my dad's nephews and nieces were older than he). Do you have that great family pic? Robert is the tall son in back and my dad is the little boy with the shaved head (he had caught lice playing with the Choctaw boys--that's the story). My dad was the next to youngest child who had his children late in life so the generations are very spread out... David Franklin Oehler was from NC and moved his family to first Paul's Valley (he left there because of an incident where he shot a guy...mixed stories there but the newspaper account can be found on the Gavin County history website). Due to this, they lost most of their resources and moved to forty acres (undeveloped) in Broken Bow. (He said he left NC because he didn't want his children to marry their cousins but this is a hardheaded lot so I suspect some other issues.) Last I heard, my cousin's son (Robert Dean Cress) had inherited half the property in Broken Bow and a neighbor the other half. I do have the will of David Franklin's father from NC. He was quite successful it seemed and had acquired several parcels of property. I visited the Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church a couple of years ago and saw my great-grandfather's grave, etc. (I was most interested in Margaret Kirk because my dad married my mom in Ireland right after WWII and Margaret was Irish and that was something that David Franklin apparently idealized. Unfortunatly, he died before my mom arrrived in OK) I am also interested in Emily Brigman's family because there wa rumor that they were Native American but I suspect that this is just rumor. E-mail me if you like: coolmodu@yahoo.com
