I am a decendent of John Newman Offenbacher born in Virginia. According to family legend and photos, John was born around 1842, fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy and then switched to the Union side. He settled with his wife, Ann Katherine Claspy in Champaign County, Ohio. His daughter, Cora Offenbacher, was my great grandmother. I have photos of quite a few of the Ohio Offenbachers, including John, his wife Ann, Cora at 3 years old, and Cora's siblings with their spouses as adults. There seems to be much confusion on the spelling of the name. I have have seen Offenbaugher, Offenbacker, and Offenbacher. It could be that the spellings were changed when John Newman switched sides in the Civil War.
