Joel J. Offutt

Seeking any information on Joel J. Offutt. Probably born circa 1818 in KY to Sabert and Nancy (Payne) Offutt. Found in the 1850 Federal Census for Chicot County, AR in Oden Township. Arkansas Marriage Records for 1837-1957 have a marriage for J. J. Offutt, age 36 and Miss Sarah Nichols age 18 that took place April 9th, 1853 in Chicot County, possibly in Bellepoint. 1860 Federal Census records for Mooney Township, Chicot County list a J. J. Offit, age 47 (or 42, not very legible), along with a female Offutt, first name illegible age 25. No search results for 1870 so far. I would like to try and determine what happened to Joel and his wife.

Any help appreciated

Dave O.

Jamie is noted on the Fayette Co., KY 1900 Census record as the granddaughter @ 18 yrs <1881 KY to the HOH of Sarah Vaughn/Offutt. Sarah was married to Samuel H. Offutt who died in 1894. He was the son of Samuel Ray Offutt and Elizabeth C. Hayes. Sarah and Samuel H. Offutt had 4 sons, James Samuel Offutt, George Offutt, Millard Offutt and John Marion Offutt. Have not been able to locate any marriage information to any of Sarah's 4 sons. Would love to find out who were the parents of Jamie who later married George Watkins Ewell. Any information would be really appreciated.

John Offutt (Offett)

Seeking information on John and Lillian M. Offutt. Per Arkansas Marriage Records John Offutt and Lillian Alexander were married April 10, 1887 in Little Rock Arkansas. John was listed as being 30 years old from Desha County. Lillian was listed as being 25, and from Drew County. However in the 1900 Census they are found in Bowie Township, Desha County it appears that they were listed as Offett, and the ages given do not match up to being 13 years older than their ages as given in the Marriage Records. John is listed as being born Dec 1848 in LA. Lillian is listed as being born Nov. 1863 in AR. There are 4 children listed. In 1910 however he is found in the Census in Bowie Township, Chicot County, Arkansas

Any help appreciated

Tamara,

Not sure how much you would be able to do in regards to researching Native American ancestry if there is a tie in.

So far I have your line as

Irvin Samuel Offutt Born Jan 1894 in Ohio, died Jul 23, 1967 in Wichita, KS. Married Agnes Harmon c1914. THey had 7 children.

Irvin was the son of Hezekiah Bartlett Offutt, born March 30, 1858 in Georgetown, KY and died May 17, 1929 in Springfield, OH and Luberta V. (possibly Ramby) born Jun 01, 1872 in MD and died Nov 23, 1909; who were married circa 1888. Hezekiah and Luberta had 7 children as well. Both Hezekiah and Luberta, along with two of their children are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Moorefield, OH. I believe Hezekiah was the son of George W. Offutt born between 1822 and 1825 in KY and Lucretia Lewellyn (last name unknown who was born between 1832 and 1835 in KY. Information that I have found so far indicates that George and Lucretia had at least 7 children, 3 daughters and 4 sons. George W. Offutt may have been a son of Thomas Odle Offutt and his wife Charity Benton.

Most of this information came from tracing back through the Federal Census information out there. More information might be available, but at least you have a start on where to look. If you are interested I can send you a report in Microsoft Word format that would show all of this information along with the names of the kids and whatever dates and locations that I have found.

Let me know. Once you've completed your thesis if you have a desire to follow it up I will be happy to help you.

Dave O.

Again,

Thank you very much. My mother said Irvin Samuel Offutt was half Native American?? She also said the family raised horses in Kentucy? I know there is family in Ohio as well.

Is there a different research process for trying to locate a native American?

Tamara,

I know very little, and that is all based on what research I have done since reading your post. What I do know so far is that according to the 1920 and 1930 Census Irvin was born in Ohio, on the 14th of Feb 1894. This information comes from both the 1920 and 1930 Census as well as the Social Security Death Index. Per both of the Census sheets Irvin was born in OH, as were his parents. Yet when I tried to locate them in Ohio in the 1900 Census I found no family that was listed under Offutt that had a child named Irvin. Irvin and Agnes had a number of children, one of which is your mother. If you know where Irvin died, your best bet would be to try and obtain a copy of his death certificate, as it would hopefully show his parents information. I am still doing some research, but at this point that is all I can tell you. I have a great deal of Offutt information, and I can tell you that the name Irvin appears as a middle name of an Offutt once. I do have a couple of Irving's additionally. I have looked at the Samuel's that I have information on using the 1894 birth date and came up empty as well. Should I find additional information I will enter another post. If you have any additional information that might provide me a clue as to his father's name please let me know.

Dave O.

Keith,

I can't be of much help, as Everett was not in my database, I can tell you though after doing some qucik research that he appears in the household of T. W. Offutt in the 1920 Census of KY in East Stamping Ground, Scott County. From that census the wife of T. W. is listed as Mary. In the 1910 Census they are again in E. Stamping Ground. However they were enumareted as Offut, Thomas with wife Mollie. Thomas and Mollie/Mary were both born in KY circa 1870 based on their ages. They were married circa 1889, and had 6 children all who survived till at least the 1910 Census, sons Clayton, Raymond and Everett as well as daughters Pearl, Belle and Nettie.

I will be looking at this family more, since they were not known to me I will want to add them to the Offutt material that I have.

If find anything else out I will add another post. Strangely so far I have been unable to locate Thomas, or Thomas W. in any earlier census listings.

Dave O.

You may be talking about James Orlander Offutt, who I have as being born circa 1843 in MO. I have three marriages credited to him, one to Mary Fletcher in 1864, one to Josephine Bonine in 1873 in Ray County, MO and one in 1875 to Sarah E. Jackson in 1875. I have that there were two children, one named Bertha, no name for the other child. Both of these children were supposed to have been from the first marriage, and though I don't know it for sure my impression is that they both died at an early age and were buried near their mother Mary Fletcher Offutt, near the Fletcher plot. Sarah E. Jackson could be Bettie if she went by Elizabeth. No facts to back this up at this time though, none of the research I have access to has a date of death for James or Sarah.

Dave O.

Hello Perry,

Thanks so much for your reply and information on the Offutt question I had posted. With your help I was able to find and copy two wills that I did not have before. Unfortunately these did not provide the documentation for the link I needed for the DAR application.

I have also been able to locate a copy of Nelle Offutt Chesley's book and hope this provides some documentation as I am still going through it.

Are you interested in any OFFUTT info yourself? I would be happy to share with you if that's a line you're working on.

Thanks again for the help and suggestions,
Holly

Hey Dave,

This is Holly Bennett and I think that someone picked up my post on Ancestry.com looking for help with my Solomon Offutt's link to Nathaniel Offutt and forwarded it to you. I am still working on documenting this link for a NSDAR application since they would not take the book, Capon Valley.... by Maud Pugh as an acceptable source.

Maybe someone out there will have something helpful with this brickwall of mine.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help me with this.
Holly
Hi--

A family member, Irene Johnston, now deceased, was working on the Offutt family. She had the children of Nathl. Offutt and Eliz. Owen as Samuel Owen, Eliz Burgess, (Rachel) Ann and Solomon. Solomon, b abt 1775 ma. Eliz. Roberts on 06 Apr 1804. She listed as proofs: Maude Pugh's book "Capon Valley". The will of Sam'l. Offutt, Lib.1, Fol.161, Frederic Co. MD, The will of Lawrence Owen, BK.1, P. 167, Frederick Co, MD, "The Offutt Family", Book I by Nelle Offutt Chesley. Bible records of Samuel Offutt who married Eliz. Burgess in possession of Mrs. Blank of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and included in Mrs. Chesley's book. I don't know which of the proofs refer to Solomon being the son of Nathaniel Offutt. Hope this helps. Perry

Holly--

Glad to hear that the wills are really there. I do have another item that I should have sent instead, it addresses your problem more closely. It is "Material copied from a DAR collection of misc. bible records. Film 0862003, LDS Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. (Transcribed from the microfilm as given by the submitter. The placement on the page of certain items led to errors in interpretation if some of the facts were not already know.) Van Vacter records from the family bible owned by Mollie Cele(Cole) who lived in Center, MO. This record was copied by Nina Jenks, a niece, and sent to Rubye V. Grayson, Dec 29, 1926 who resided at 1113 Polk St, Wichita Falls, TX.. The first entry on the record is the marriage of Solomon Van Vacter and Charity Austin on the 29th of Jan, 1816.
Soloman Van Vacter served all during the war of 1812, and was discharged from the army.
Soloman Vanvacter was the son of Joseph and Anne Van Vacter.
Joseph VanVacter died Dec 22, 1828. In the 69th year of his age.
Ann VanVacter died Dec. 30, 1843 in the 73d year of her age.
The mother of Charity Austin was of the Offutt line. There were relatives too by the name of Owen.
Soloman Offutt was an uncle of Soloman VanVacter. I will copy the record as clearly as I can from the Bible to show the line. Aunt Mollie did not want to send the Bible as she did not think it would stand the trip, as the paper is so old."

The Bible record goes on to list the births and marriages of Soloman and Charity Austin Vanvacter's children and some grandchildren. The important thing here for you is that Soloman Offutt was an uncle of Soloman VanVacter. Soloman Offutt's sister was (Rachel) Anne Offutt, b abt 1770, who married Joseph Vanvacter.

So, Cousin, you have a Bible record. The Bible in question was owned by Mollie Cole, my grandfather's sister. Her niece, Nina Jenks was my father's sister(my aunt). Mollie Cole and Nina Jenks are long dead as is Rubye Grayson(another Vanvacter descendant), I have no idea if the bible still exists. But it sounds like the record did make it to the LDS library, you may want to contact them for a copy. I will be glad to send a copy of the above but I will need an address. I would like to know how this turns out.

I am interested in the Offutt line and would appreciate anything that you send.

Sorry to take so long in answering, I have been out of town.

Take care,

Perry Jenks

Ooh, good point about her stating both parents came from MO (Mom did, Richard H is from Virginia per 1870 census). But I'm betting this is the same person- Bettie Offutt aka Sarah E Jackson, who then married a JM Ingram. I note that Clear Creek & Virgil Township are next to each other in Vernon County. Makes sense that if she was widowed (J O Offutt died 04/14/1880) that she'd want to stay close to her parents. I do find another Sarah E Jackson in 1870, in Indepence, Schuyler Co, MO, which is in the far NE side of Missouri, so I'm sticking with my guess that my Bettie is the Sarah E Jackson in Vernon Co in 1870. The only other James Offutt is the son of Samuel in Platte Co, and you probably know who he married. :) :) Bless you. :)

Looking for information on a J O Offutt, born circa 1850/55. Married a woman named Bettie about 1875, somewhere in Missouri most likely. I Find her in 1880 in Virgil Twp, Vernon Co, MO. Their historical society shows a death for a J O Offutt on 04/14/1880. They also show that Bettie remarried a J M Ingram 01/23/1881. Bettie and J O Offutt had two children, Ocieola b Nov 1876 and H Ralph Offutt born 04/11/1878. Ocieola married Orry E Michael 05/31/1891. Looking for any information on the Offutt side, or Bettie's maiden name, ect. Thanks!

I was hoping you'd have a lead on this. I looked at the Littleton Offutt, and felt there was a relation there. Thank you for all your work on the Offutt line. If you think of any other J O Offutt that would fit, let me know, but I do find a Sarah E Jackson in Clear Creek, Vernon Co, MO in 1870, and I find Bettie in Virgil Twp, Vernon Co, MO in 1880 with the two children. I've found it so frequent folks back then using their middle names. Thank you again, this has been a long lost line. :) Denise
