Re: Ogdens from Oldham, Hey, Crossbank

Some more information regarding the Ogden Family which may be of use is below.

The Ogden’s are recorded to have been residents of Greenacres as early as 1633. Abraham Ogden of “Grinacres” was the father of the Rev. Samuel Ogden, of Brazen Noze College, living in 1692. In 1747 there was a John Ogden, yeoman, of Greenacres, and in 1748, a Captain Edmund Ogden, of Welley-hole. The Ogden’s of Trub-smithy, of whom was John Ogden, Esq., barrister, are alleged to be descended from those of Greenacres

Hollins was as early as 1681 the residence of John Ogden, yeoman. In 1725, there was a John Ogden yeoman of Copster-hill. The late James Ogden, Esq., resided at Oak House, Hollins, which is still the residence of his family (1856).

At Priest-Hill, Mr Thomas Hobson draper, of Oldham, living in 1759, was father of James Hobson, Esq., merchant, who married Margaret, grand-daughter of Theophilus Ogden, yeoman of Lane-end Greenacres-moor: this James Ogden was the only gentleman resident in the town, who, at that period run his own carriage. He inhabited a mansion in the vicinity of the church; whilst his brother Thomas, who died in 1789, was an opulent draper, at Priest-Hill.

Lower Horsedge, adjacent to the town, contained the remains of a commodious old house, which was for a long time inhabited by the same family of the Ogden’s. In 1483, John Okedyn held lands in Oldham, under the Cudworth’s; and in 1486, there was a Robert Okedene, of Glodlike. Of this family, was Samuel Ogden, a celebrated Nonconformist Minister, who was born at Oldham about 1627, and received his education in Christ’s College, in Cambridge. Shortly after leaving college, he married the daughter of a Mr. Barnet, a minister, in Oldham. Becoming a zealous Nonconformist, and settling at Buxton, in Derbyshire, he was, in 1654, presented to the living of Fairfield, by the Earl of Rutland, the patron; but in 1657, he was called to the ministry at Mackworth, where he was ejected on the memorable Bartholomew day, 1662 [On St. Bartholomew's day, August 24th, 1662, the Act of Uniformity took effect, and about two hundred Presbyterian and Independent ministers lost their preferments.]. In 1686, he was appointed by Sir John Gell, to the mastership of the Free School of Wirksworth, and this situation he retained till the time of his death, May 25, 1697. He was buried at Wirksworth. He is described by the “Nonconformists’ Journal,” to have been possessed of great natural talents, and a distinguished linguist, an excellent mathematician, a lover of music, and an admirer of Latin poetry. When the pretended Archbishop of Samos travelled through England, he visited Mr. Ogden, and conversed with him in the Greek tongue. Adam Ogden, yeoman, was resident at Lower Horsedge, in 1759.

Lane End, adjoining to Fowleach, was an old habitation of the Ogden’s—their ancestors were resident here in the reign of Charles the Second. Theophilus Ogden. Yeoman, of Lane-end, died in 1723. In 1752, another Theophilus Ogden, was the possessor.
My ancesters on my maternal side are the Ogden family, When reading some old books on the history of Oldham I discovered the Ogdens were a wealthy family in fact being the only family to own their own carriage. I also discovered the following.
In 1670, Edmund Assheton, Esq., of Chadderton, sold the estate of Swine Clough an ancient farm a short distance to the west of Glodwick, to Adam Ogden the elder. The Ogden’s enjoyed this estate for several generations.

John Thomas Cocker, Esq., of New-bank Heyside purchased the estate of Swine Clough in 1850 from the Ogden Family. The Ogned family enjoyed this estate for several generations, being sold to Adam Ogden the elder in 1670 by Edmund Assheton, Esq., of Chadderton, Swine Clough was an ancient farm of approx 72 acres a short distance to the west of Glodwick. This land was later sold to Oldham council and became Alexandra Park. The House which was the residence of the Ogden family is still there and is the head gardeners house.
Has anyone seen a marriage record for these two? This Joseph is likely the same Joseph Allard who is my ggg grandfather. He later(1863)pre-empted land in the Cariboo region of BC and is found there quite elderly on the 1881 census. It says he is married but no wife is shown.

Thank so much.
Alana

My grandfather was Walter Ogden, son of Robert Sockalexis and Bertha Page. Robert was the son of Samuel and Frances Charlotte Iola(there is confusion on her name)of Indian Island. Walter,Robert and Bertha all lived in Dexter Me. I found info that Samuel was born in the Dakotas, and then moved to New Brunswick and then to Maine.
Have to dig out my records again,I believe Robert had a brother George who also lived in Maine.

HI Susan;
This is Daryl Ogden.. I received your E-Mail and thx for the info. I am still a little confused on the family ties, so it will help if we begin with a common ancestor and go from there. Please give me as much info as you can ie: names, dates, locations, etc. I will in turn research this to see if we both have a common thread. My E-Mail is mo990@juno.com

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thx

Daryl

hi my name is suzan theakston, i may have written to you before, but you said you weren't related. i think there is a possibility that we are. do you have any more specific dates regarding any of your relatives? my grandmother helen sadie ogden was from new brunswick, not 100% sure whether she was born there or in the US(maine)? she went by the name of sadie all her life. she was born may 12 1896or1899. her father's name was frank ogden b.mar.1861-d.?
her mother's name was mary (not sure of the last name) b.sept.1874-d.? both were supposed to be from maine.
brother: george ogden b.jan.12 1893-d.may 1985, in maine.
sister: francis ogden b. apr.1901-d.?
sister: lizzie ogden b.mar.1903-d?
sister: charolette ogden b.jan.1905-d.?
her mother and brother supposedly went back to maine and left my grandmother behind in st.john new brunswick. i have managed to track her brother down through the death index and the 1930 census of maine(indian island reservation) he was a neighbour to francis and sarah sockaexis at the time. no mention of the mother, unable to find her. i think that their father was related to samuel ogden, as their were a few of them in new brunswick at the time. alot of your info coincides with my info. when my grandmother died they showed my mother and father her birth papers which my father thinks were treaty papers, had all her info on there, but have gone missing since that time. most of the info i got is from the 1911 census of new brunswick. after that i hit a dead end. i would love to compare notes with you, hope you check your messages soon. talk to you later.

I just googled "Lillian Ogden" AND ballet- and saw there are some articles about her and other dancers in the Times, after all. They give you some names. They are after my grandmother quit- the first one is 1918. I will see what there is on Ancestry, as now I am curious. Sue

Hi- I just learned, from Sandy, who you are. I was a bit uncomfortable at first. Would you like the names of some of the dancers that I know about and the photo I have of Lillan and several other girls? Sandy told me she had reviewed your article before it came out and that you are a great writer in the dance world. I was being a bit cautios, not knowing who you were. I can go though my grandmother's scrapbook and find names for you, if you like.

I would love to know more about some of these women, also, as my grandmother did alot of dancing outside of the Met and afterwards, also. She was still quite well in contact with everyone there. I am writing so frantically that I hadn't even thought about researching their lives. That would be a great plus to our book. Sincerely- Sue Maxwell

George, my grandmother actually was the premiere danseuse for two seasons. I am in the process of coauthoring a book of her life and career with the head of the ballet dept at the university where I live. Sandy has great connections in the ballet world and will do the ballet part of the book. I am doing the family background and her life. We expect to publish next year. Have been doing research for 9 years. I have photos of Lillan and I know all of the ladies that my grandmother danced with, but I don't know much about them individually. My grandmother quit for moral reasons- that is all I will say about that one, but the others continued dancing, from what I can tell. One exception is her female partner, Loretta Glynn- I know she passed out on the stage of the Met due to blood poisoning and died in the hospital. There is a woman who has a ton of info on Loretta, through her fiance. She was going to send me info, but her fiance was ill, and after a while she would not answer my emails, so I gave up on that- what a loss- a whole box full of info on her.

I can't share info about my grandmother because much will be a surprize; I am the only one that has all of the proof of what she did- tons of articles, and memorabilia, etc. This is an important project. I am aware of the article that says she was the prima for only one year, and that Adeline Gene was before her, but if you look at the Met Archives you will see she danced two seasons. It may have had something to do with her age. She was really only 14 when she made her debut- She danced for the Met from Dec 1912-1915. I have a ton of articles and all sorts of things about her dancing. You may want to wait until we have published if you are going to include her. It will be published by a major publishing company next year. I am writing and researching like mad at the moment- it is a huge project. Yours sounds very interesting.

The people that she danced with the most were Lillian, Madeline Seitz, Florence Glover, and Loretta was alway her partner. I know the names of the women in the classes. Malvinna taught her privately and even during the summer. Her family was quite close to Cavalazzi. Kathleen Harding was also a part of the group, in that she played the piano and was Cavalazzi's secretary.

You won't find much in the NYTimes, as they never talked about the ballerinas. It was the other newwpapers that talked about them. Sue

Thanks for pointing out my error regarding Francis Ogden. My records are accurate, but my brain wasn't in gear when I wrote that he was married twice.

Richard Carlson, who also responded to my post, is fairly certain Margaret's maiden name was Ashbaugh. Do you have any information that will support that hypothesis? Also, do you agree that Francis was born in Kentucky?

Thanks for your reply. My records indicate that my wife, Nancy Ogden, is a great great grandniece of John Ogden (1814-1894).

Earlier this week, we spent four hours at the Adams County Historical Society in Gettysburg searching for information on the Ogden family. We also spent several hours in the Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg where numerous Ogdens are buried. Prior to that, I have used the Gettysburg Times archives and other local papers searching for obituaries, marriages, deaths, etc.

Nancy and I are 1949 graduated of Gettysburg High School, and last week we attended our 60th reunion, the reason for our visit.

I have so much information on the Ogden Family, I hardly know where to begin. I will see what I can extract from my software program (Reunion) on the approximately sixty Ogdens for which I have records, and if you agree, I suggest we contact each other directly to exchange information. My email address is gpaw@mac.com.

I am particularly interested in learning more about Francis Ogden, the father of James, John and Francis C. That was the primary reason for visiting the Historical Society. Unfortunately, all we came away with was the name of his first wife, Margaret ?? and the name of his second wife, Margaret Little.

Enough for now. Bruce Westerdahl

I am writing a series of articles on the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, the first of which came out in July 2009 in Dance Chronicle, Vol. 32, No. 2, on the years 1906-12, when Eva Swain was first a student at the school, then a member of the company and for a year Prima Ballerina. I've seen some material on Eva in the Met Archives, but now I'm trying to find information on many other dancers in the company, including Lillian Ogden. Anything that you have found would be of great interest to me - and would be fully acknowledged. Good luck on your project, unless, of course, it's now finished and published!
With warm good wishes -- George Dorris

Re: Direct line from Orlando Ogden to John the Pilgrim

Hi Daryl-

Have you come across any Lorenzo's or Lucy's in your Ogden research? How about a Jonathan Ogden that lived in Illinois?

My 3rd gg-mother was Lucy Ogden, born about 1841 most likely in Knox county, Ill., to Lorenzo Ogden and his wife Martha G. Morris. They moved to Iowa at some point.

Lorenzo Ogden was born in Ohio abt 1812. (Scott county, maybe??)

Also living in Knox county, Ill. was a Jonathan Ogden born in the 1790's. He could be Lorenzo's father, uncle or other relative. He signed on Lorenzo and Martha's marriage license - for Martha though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Melanie

Ogden's in Iowa

I'm sure I have posted a message on this board before, but at this point, I am unable to locate it. I am looking for decendents of Edward and Ann Elizabeth Ogden. I know there should be 11 kids, one of which would be my great grandfather Clyde V Ogden (resided in Des Moines, IA).

I have located Edward and Ann's death records and they are buried in El Dorado Springs, MO. I believe two of their daughters are in that area also. They had a son Arthur (I believe) who is rumored to have traveled and settled in California.

Any assistance in tracing this family would be greatly appreciated.
Heidi
