I am a decedent of Alexander Ogilvie. He is a brother to William. Alexander would be my great grandfather. Alexander was born in Canada in 1851 and died in Balsam Lake, WI in 1924.

I am very new to ancestry.com. Is it possible for you to view my tree? I do have it listed as public. I did not know of a brother named Archie. I have very limited info also. I do know of a sister to William and Alexander named Christie but do not know much more than that. I have also been searching for William's and Alexander's parents names.

Hi,

I am the son of Natalia Ogilvie Sheviakov and I suspect that she was the cousin of one of your relatives.

I do have information about the Ogilvie's in Russia (it starts with Sir Alexander Ogilvie [born Edinburgh, 1765] who was an Admiral/Field Marshall under Czar Peter and died on May 6, 1847.

As British Royalty, I tried to find out more about him in Edinburgh a few years ago, but was told that all those records (from that time) are now in London. It is my understanding that the Ogilvies are part of the House of Windsor and closely related to the crown. I was able to see the "family castle" near Kirriemuir on the River South Eske (northwest of Dundee).

There were a series of sons (and daughters) since then (one of whom was the Governor of Siberia) ending with my grandfather (Nicholas Ogilvie) who was a dentist in Irkutsk. He had a brother (Constantine) who was a surgeon and I believe he married a Slobodchikoff.

If all this makes sense, let me know and I do have more, but not a whole lot. You may be able to help me fill in some of my gaps. I certainly hope so.

Rick

Hi
Mary Charlotte is my grandfather's (Alexander Andrew Ogilvie)sister. I knew she married James Reid on 27 Sep 1924 in Toronto, but know little else of her life, death or children. My mother recalls a few details about the family and her younger sister played with their daughter Marlene, and likely remembers more.
I have photos of many headstones I took in Kilwaughter and there were lots of John Ogilbys in the church yard.
I also had a long discussion with an ogilvie girl in Alberta. About David (and Julie Obrien )but I have not heard anything from her since Jan 2010.
john.r.ogilvie on skype &
jogilvie@uoguelph.ca &
www.uoguelph.ca/~jogilvie

I'm very pleased to see this thread picked up again.
The initial posting was by my sister Laura back in 2010.
(correction David Ogilvie married Margaret Thompson not Crawford). We have done a great deal on this family since then and have visited Kilwaughter Parish and the area and the church where this family emigrated from. William Ogilvie (then spelt Ogilby) and Agnes (Nancy) Braden (then spelled Brady) are listed in the 1st Larne Non-subscribing Presbyterian Church baptism register in Larne. The baptism register shows entries for some of the children. Records for baptisms are missing in some places: pre 1720, 1770-1795,1797-1800, 1804-1825 and 1833-34. Unfortunately, this means James and William II's baptism dates are missing as is John Edward's. The following are the dates entered for the other children: Robert - 23 Jan 1828; Ann Isabella - 1 May 1831; Samuel - 2 Oct 1835; David - 30 Dec 1837.
These records are availabe at PRONI on Microfilm 1B/6A
I found no entry for John Robert 1939.

The David just mentioned, never married. I have his obituary and he returned home in his latter years and died in Ottawa on the 1 Jan 1922, after living abroad in the U.S. for several decades. The David Ogilvie (b. 1812, d. 8 Feb 1897) who lived in the Ottawa area and was married to Julie O'Brien was my great great grandfather. His parents were John Ogilby and Mary Nelson. We believe that he may have been a nephew of William Sr. (John an elder brother of Wm. Sr.)and came over with the family to settle in the Ottawa area in 1842. There were possibly other family members who came as well. A John Ogilby was listed on McCabe's List working on the Rideau Canal in 1829. He listed his father as James Ogilby living at Headwood townland, Coldwater (Kilwaughter Parish)in County Antrim.

I live in Guelph if anyone is close enough by and wants to see some of the records, photos and transcriptions that my sister and I have accummulated. There are many unanswered questions and I would gladly share resources.

Hi Gail and Jean

I am researching decendants of John Stewart Ogilvy (1887-1966) born Lintrathen, died Alyth.

He married my Great Aunt Agnes Clark in Coupar Angus in 1911 and I believe they had 7 children. The youngest was also John Stewart Ogilvy and he emigrated to Canada.

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-18717053.html

I'd like to find out who the other 6 children were and see if I can trace any family documentation passed on from Agnes - she had two brothers who died in WW1 and I'm trying to find any letters or photos from their war days.

A long shot I know!

David

Hi John, per your post, I have some similar data with some differences:

I have a photo of the headstone of the William Ogilvie(I)that you mentioned above from his grave in the Ramsayville / Bethany United+ Cemetery Carleton (Ottawa) County, Ontario that reads: ""WILLIAM OGILVIE Died Jun. 3, 1857 Æ. 68 Yrs. His Beloved Wife AGNES BRADEN Died Sept 28, 1885 Æ. 85 Yrs."

This would put William's (I) birth and death at about 1789-1857, and his wife Agnes Nancy Braden at 1794-1885.

AS for his children, I have the same birth dates you have for Robert, Ann Isabella, John, Samuel, and David...but I have slightly different birth dates for James (I show 1816 to your 1814) and William (II)which I show as 1824 to your 1818.

1 - William (II) is my ancestor, so I would be very interested in anything you have that would verify either the 1818 or 1824 birth date.

2 - Also I show a different set of parents for William (I) so anything you have about that would be very helpful.

You show William (I)'s father as William (0) and Isabell...whereas I have his father and mother as James Ogilvie (1768-) and Catherine McVicar Wilson (1769-).

First there was William Ogilvie (I) born Larne, Antrim, Ireland son of William Ogilvie (0) is unknown in Ottawa but his mother Isabell apparently arrived.
Children: James (1814), William (II- 1818), Robert (1826), Ann Isabella (1831), John Edward (1833), Samuel Ogilvie (1835), David Ogilvie (1837), and John Robert Ogilvie (1839). All these are buried at Ramsayville,Otario except William (II) who went to Campbellford Ontario and is buried there.

James had a son William (III – 1846),the surveyor, and of Yukon fame plus 7-8 others including my grandfather (John Robert).
I am interested in John Ogilvie born 1860 to Euphemia Hunter of Kirkton, Tealing. On 4 November 1860 at the Tealing Free Church Kirk Session, Alexander Ogilvie admitted paternity of Euphemia's child. This is the same Alexander who was married to Isabella Ogilvie. John Ogilvie was raised by his grandfather, John Hunter as both Euphemia and Alexander died when John was quite young. I am trying to find out if John had anything to do with his Ogilvie half-siblings, especially when he migrated to Australia in 1889. There are many interesting things about John Ogilvie, including that he went to Edinburgh University. I am also trying to find out who sponsored him.

Hope someone out there can help.

Alexander was age 23, a miller, bachelor, father David Ogilvie, farmer, mother Jannet Low. Isabella Herald was age 20 of High Street, Arbroath, a spinster, father George, a clerk, deceased and mother Catherine Kydd. Wit: William Anderson and Louisa Herald

I would the census would help you figure out ages and places of birth, siblings etc.other relatives living nearlby.

Janis

My ancester, William Ogilvie, son of William and Agnes Nancy Braden and married to Martha Haney, does not look like he is the surveyor.

William Ogilvie, son of William and Agnes Nancy Braden, was married to Martha Haney in 1842, making 1846 an incorrect date.

BUT I did find out more information on William teh surveyor including his father here:

http://www.landsurveyinghistory.ab.ca/Characters/Ogilvie_W.h...

William Ogilvie

William Ogilvie was born at Ottawa on April 7th, 1846, his parents being James Ogilvie and Margaret Holliday Ogilvie, who came from Belfast, Ireland, and Peebles, Scotland, respectively.

He received his education in the local public schools at Ottawa, and at the age of 20 years became articled to Robert Sparks, who was then a prominent surveyor at Ottawa. He was admitted as a PLS, on July 12th, 1869, and practiced local surveying for six years.

In 1872 he married Miss Mary Ann Sparks, sister of Mr. Robert Sparks, and continued to practice his profession at Ottawa until 1875 when he was first employed by the Dominion Government.

Mr. Ogilvie spent his entire life in surveying for the Department of the Interior. He obtained his commission as a Dominion Land Surveyor on April 14th, 1872. The following summary of the surveys performed by him was furnished by the Surveyor General:
Hi Lorraine!
I am so pleased to hear from you!How amazing that you are related to Mary Rose. Francis was my grandmothers brother, so we really are quite closely related. It so great to hear from someone so close, as often it is people who are three or four times removed. I have been researching on and off for a few years now, its all in a bit of a muddle, but something I hope to sort out when I retire (I'm 47)I am married with one son (Francis!)and living in Lincoln.Originally from South Wales. My grandmother is no longer alive, or my father sadly, but I have an uncle and aunt who will be fascinated to know I have found you I'm sure, as you would be second cousins..Granny always said what a small family we had,as her brother didn't have any children but I am learning that there are lots of us if you only skip a generation! I will invite you as a guest so you can see my tree, hopefully it will make sense. I have found bits and pieces, which you might find of some interest. I am particularly interested in finding proof of Jane Gray's father (Mary's mother)as if I can prove that he was a John Gray born in America, it will connect us to a tree that goes right back, which I will talk to you about. My email address is sian@msumners.fsnet.co.uk if you would prefer to use that. If I can be of any help in your search or if you find I have anything wrong, please say! Thanks again for contacting, hope to keep in touch, kind regards Sian. PS I would be very interested in the picture! I also have one, might be the same!

Hello Sian
My name is Lorraine Pull and I have recently started researching my mother's family (Clan Rose). A friend who is helping me has identified your ancestor Francis Falconer as being the younger brother of my Great Grandmother, Mary Falconer, later Mary Rose as she married Alexander Macgregor Rose and thereafter lived in Aberdeen. I am 60 years old and live in West London, married with 3 grown up children, recently retired from work, hence the time to pursue this research. I even have a handsome studio photograph of Francis Falconer amongst the family photos left to me by my mother. Do contact me if you are interested in pursuing this further!

I'm hoping someone out there might have some tips on where I should go next on the research front, or better yet weigh in with that all-too-scarse genealogical lynchpin that unlocks the family tree!
Hi,
I wonder if you can help me. I am researching my Great Grandfather's family who came from Ferryport-on-Craig. He was David Ogilvie, who became a teacher and moved to England, and his father was David Ogilvie, a blacksmith, living at the Ferry Toll. My GGF's mother was Mary Dandie Henderson and she was not married to David. I have read the posts about a David Ogilvie who came to New Zealand and died at Otaio. Just wondering if this is the same David Ogilvie. I live in Bradford, Yorkshire in England. Regards, Julie Waterhouse
Hugh Ogilvie (Ogilvy)

I am still looking for Hugh Ogilvie - married to Clarissa Winch who was born in 1801 in the USA. They emigrated to Ontario and had children named Frances, Elizabeth and Henrietta as far as I have found so far. There is info on Clarissa but nothing on Hugh. It is possible that they were married in upstate New York and her Winch family is well documented. Any info on Hugh out there at all? I don't know where to look next as he seems to have completely disappeared. Thanks!

Hello 'Any help out there...'?
I know this is rather an old thread to reply to but as research is 'never-ending' I just thought I'd see if there is any monitoring ongoing with this line of the OGILVIE's?
The Charles mentioned in Leisa Logan's 2000 thread is also the one associated with my other recent reply to a 2001 posted thread i.e.

"Gedees Family by b1bhby34
Posted: 27 Jan 2001 1:00PM
Classification: Query
Edited: 2 Jul 2001 2:27PM
Surnames: Geddes, Nicol, Ogilvie

More Geddes information. Siblings not known by me.
James Geddes a Cabinet Maker by trade of Banff Scotland was born April 17, 1872 in Banff died Jan 9,1873 in Clyde River Nova Scotia. He had been the son of James Geddes a Linen Dresser. His mother's name had been Jane Shearer, whose father was a farmer and distiller.
He is said to have taken Sarah Ogilvie from her boarding school and they eloped and married March 11-1804.
At an rate James wife Sarah Ogilvie was the youngest daughter of Charles Ogilvie & Ellen Emlay or Imlay.
Her sister was Anne Ogilvie married William Nicol June 19, 1795 at the Parish of Gaameerie, Banff Scotland. It is from them that I have descended.
It is said that their brother William was of "Knighted" Title. Some of the descendants ofthat Ogilvie family are known to be in Australia as well as Canada.Happy searching fellow searchers!
unfortunately the Geddes name on James branch died out due to having girls. There was one son John of his second marriage that may have carried on that branch of the Geddes name if anyone is searching."

"Re: Ogilvie tree
WATTJ10
Posted: 13 Aug 2011 5:46PM
Classification: Query

Can any one contributing to these threads, provide any further information on Charles Ogilvie m. Helen Imlach (Ellen Imlay) Gamrie, Banffshire, Scotland?
Our family line is said to come from Jean Ogilvie, another one of their daughters."

...so Sarah, Ann & our lines Jean or Jane Ogilvie are siblings.
