Hello-

All of my family is from Russia and we immigrated to the U.S. in the 1980’s when I was a child, after waiting many years to get permission to come. My grandfather’s name was Abraham Okin, but he changed his name to Аркадий (Arkadyie) in Russia because it was very hard for Jews with Jewish names to work and live there, as Russia was very anti-Semitic. He had a brother named ,Изак (Izaac) Okin who worked for the МПС - Ministry of Railway Travel. His brother had one son with his wife Clara, his name is Михаил (Mikhael, Misha in Russian, Michael in English). They also lived in Moscow. My grandfather worked as a construction engineer/building project developer and had one son, my father, who had one daughter, me. The family lived in Moscow, but the family roots were from further east.My great-grandfather’s name was Моисей (Moses or Moshe)and he was from Belarus. He died in 1922 or 1925 (my father isn't sure which as it was long before he was born). His wife’s name was Хава (Chava). She died much later and my grandmother remembers that she had relatives in America, although she doesn’t know if they were Okins from her husband’s side of the family or her own side of the family (her maiden name that we don’t know). My grandfather died in 1988, in Moscow. He was 70 years old.
Personally, I have never met anyone with the same last name as me and think it is not very common for a Jewish name, at least it wasn't in Russia according to my mother and father. My mother has told me that it might come from a type of fish.

Tzalel (Charles) Okun b. 1850 Shchedrin, Minsk, Belarus was the oldest of eight. Peretz, Schlomei, Alconah, Moishe and Lazar were his brothers (the others were sisters). His first cousins were Feigel, Morechai, Yehuda, Dovid and Yisrael (from his father's brother Ya'akov). That's all I have!

Hello from the Okins in England!
I was interested to come accross this site. My grandfather was a jewish immigrant from Belarus (somewhere near Minsk) somewhere around 1900. He came to London, England where our family remains, but I understand he had a number of brothers who went on to the USA. I think one was named "Charlie"? My grandma on that side was called Mini and she was Polish, from Radom, nr Warsaw.
I understand that most of the Okins derived from a local name "Okun" - a type of fish in russian, apparently.
It would be nice to hear from my American cousins - If, indeed, we are!
Regards
Stewart Okin

Okin Family Search

I recently married into the Okin family. My husband and I are interested in our family origins. We currently know very little. I am interested in finding other family members and would like to build a family tree. Any information would be wonderful for our future generations. This is what we know so far:

Harry and Deborah Okin (Bronx, NY) gave birth to Robert "BOB" Okin on Feb. 20, 1917, He had two sons- Kenneth and Dennis Okin. Kenneth Okin had a daughter and a son- Samuel and Catherine Okin. Dennis Okin had a son and a daughter- Peter and Elizabeth Okin.

I am married to Peter Okin as of June 15, 2002.
Very interested in finding out any additional information. Thanks for all your time, Shawn-Olivia

relatives

I am looking for any other relatives I might have on my fathers side(Okin)
My father Jules Okin is the youngest of several children. Jules is currently quite ill, and is 82 years old. His brothers were Hymie, Benjamin,Sol and Max and possibly there was another sibling left in Russia. His older brother Sol is still alive. His sisters were Tillie, and Anna. My grandfather died (Label) when my father was 2 years old. His mother's name was Sara. Label had a brother William and Alex. Alex would be over 100 years old if alive. William served in the army for 4 hears and was married. His occupation was an iron worker. He worked on horse shoes. The main large city was Minsk. However, they lived in the town of Koedanover, and Kameluoka. Spelled incorrectly, but sounds like the above. There is a possibility that our last name might have been Okinstan?

I have many cousins that I am in touch with, but would like to know if there are others.I have one brother Lewis Okin. He has 3 children Brian, Alex and Rebecca Okin. I have 3 children, David, Michelle and Beth. They are all in their 30's.
My uncle Ben never married, and my Uncle Hymie had one son Louis Okin. He has 2 children. My Aunt Tillie had 2 children: Howard and Helene. My Uncle Sol has 4 children. My Aunt Anna had 2 children. All of them have several children and grand-children.

My Uncle Max had 2 children Susan and and adopted daughter. My grandfathers brothers had several children as did their children. So my family is huge. If you know of any ancestors, please write. Thank You, Rona Dee Okin

Rona,

Please accept my condolences on the death of your father, Jules.

I am sure we cannot be very closely related, as none of the names you mention are familiar to me.

Our progenitor Joseph Okin was born c. 1850 in Russia. I will respond to you re birthplace in a few days. He brought his brothers here, and I will attempt to find their names.

All of our branch of the Okin family arrived in the NYC area before 1900. Does this help?

Wishing you success let's compare notes in a month or two -

Susan Okin Goldsmith
