Re: John Oklass and a descendant lineage

According to family tradition, John OKLASS came from Bordeaux, France, to Yarmouth, MA, then settled in Ste. Genevieve, MO. The 1850 census lists his occupation as shoemaker.

The surname OKLASS is a mystery--apparently now extinct; some have surmised a French origin, but the only other Oklass family I have seen was in 1910 Youngstown, Ohio census and was apparently derived from a Russian/Polish name Oklejewski or Okolewski. "Oklass" means "unclassified" in Swedish.

For another family's tradition that he was 2nd cousin to Napoleon, see http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.immigration.depeur/48/mb.a...

John Oklass (1794?-1869)
m. 1817 Elizabeth White Watson (1801-1867)
Mary Louise Jane Oklass (1818-1861)
m. 1840 Henry C. Pinckley (1815->1855)
Harriet Matilda Pinckley (1853-1921)
m. 1882 John Louis Lister (1860-1922)
Mary Louise Lister (1888-1968)
m. 1910 Rodney Bedell (1888-1973)
Further mention of John Oklass, in association with James Clark, can be found in the book "Territorial Masonry: The Story of Freemasonry and the Louisiana Purchase, 1804-1821" by Ray Vaughn Denslow (1925), pp. 157-159, 169 (http://books.google.com/books?vid=ISBN156459551X).

Apparently both Oklass and Clark became members of the Louisiana Lodge No. 109 on 26 Dec 1821. This Lodge had its charter revoked in 1824 because of non-payment of dues to the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. In a letter dated April 4, 1825, in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, and signed by Oklass, Clark, Nicholas Fleming, Thomas Oliver, and Sebastian Burtscher, these men sought to be reinstated as members. The petition was accompanied by a supporting statement by Henry Keil.

Charles,

William John Oklass, the son of John Oklass was the 2nd husband of Jane Hazelwood Bailey. I do have a census from St. Genevieve county, Missouri in 1860 listing the Oklasses. Since their not our direct line, I don't have a lot. There is a girl in Alton, IL who is a direct descendant to says the Oklass's are somehow related to Napolean Bonaparte, though we haven't made that connection as yet.

Let me know what you need.
