Would it be possible for you to post your lineage from current back to as far as you've gotten? I'm trying to trace back my own lineage, but I cant get any further than my grandfather because he was an orphan, and we dont even know if Oland was his real surname...any help you can provide would be MUCH appreciated. :)

Well I dunno if we could potentially be related, but I do know of a person that actually lives IN Norway that found me on Plaxo (the social networking site), on his search for other relatiives around the world. His name is Oyvind Oland. Feel free to find him on Plaxo. Perhaps he could be a lost cousin! :)

As for my family, the furthest I can trace back is to my grandfather, who was an orphan; the last I knew he was born in Massachusetts. his name was Bradley Henry Oland. As it is, the story in our family states that Oland may not have even been his birth surname, but instead something given to him by the orphanage. :( No chance you may have anything traced back to him, could you?? :)

Not sure if this is even related, but my grandfather's name was Bradley Henry Oland; he was an orphan, I believe born in Massachussetts. That's the most I've ever been able to find. Have you been able to trace from now going back to Henry Oland & Rebecca Kirk??

Thank you for your reply, I have looked there and this is as far back as I can get though the internet so far, I have two generations for Somerset then it seems they moved to Gloucester then late 1800's on to Swindon. Anyway thanks again for your reply

I donÃ¨t have your anaswer but just in case you didn ot know (and you probably do) Familysearch.com has a little bit of info on Olands who lived in and around the Somerset, Bristol, Devon area around the time that you are inquiring about. Perhaps there is a link there for you. I have been trying to get a link to these names but so far the info is too limited.

My grand-father came to Canada from England and I am the youngest child of his son George Bauld Oland. I have not been able to trace any connection to Scandinavia from England.

Seems like a common name but isn't My relatives came from Norway, lived in Minnesota , then homesteaded in North and South Dakota. Any relatives out there? Would like to know where we came from in Norway.
I know of Olands in the beer business in Canada, (Moosehead) and also some in Dallas Texas. Don't think we are related. I live in Arizona.

Hello Catherine,

I think my father can help you. He has done a lot of work and has most of it accessable via the net. Your Great-Grandfather was an important figurehead for several generations of Oland family members. John taught more Olands how to brew beer than anyone else. My Grandfather learned to brew beer from him. I beleive you have seen the book Bruce Oland did but you may not have read the Chatelaine article from 1974. My father has this on his site. The Oland name dates back to the 1500's in England but so far no one has been able to link us with those people. We can only get back to the 1700's. A lady named Judy Bingham (related to Ethelred Oland, brother of John C.) has been to England to do research and many for the info she had is what you will find on http://www.familysearch.org/.

On Sunday, March 7, 2004, Mrs. BERTHA MAY GOSNELL, 81, of Howard County; wife of the late James A. Gosnell; mother of Rebecca Marquardt and her husband Ralph, Joyce Gilliece and her husband James, Darlene Koch, Janet Taylor and her husband Robert, Jr., and Karen Gosnell; grandmother of 14 children, five step-grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; sister of Lucille Massey and her husband William.
Friends may call on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 . . . Damascus, MD. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Lisbon United Methodist Church . . . Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Sunshine, MD.

Bertha M. Gosnell, a retired Carroll County banker and active church member, died of Alzheimer's disease Sunday at Continuum Care Nursing Home in Sykesville. She was 81.
She was born Bertha Oland in Brookeville, Montgomery County, and graduated from Sherwood High School near Olney in 1939. She was married in 1942 to James A. Gosnell, a poultry and produce vendor, and moved to a farm in Woodbine, Howard County. Her husband died in 1980.
Mrs. Gosnell began her banking career in the late 1950s as a teller at the old Woodbine Bank. She later became vice president of Wesminster Trust Co., now Westminster Union Bank. She retired in 1984. She was active for many years as a member of Lisbon United Methodist Church and was a former secretary of its Woman's Society. Mrs. Gosnell enjoyed sewing and making Christmas ornaments, which she gave to family members and friends. She also was interested in her family's genealogy and attended reunions. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at her church, 15875 Frederick Road. Mrs. Gosnell is survived by five daughters Rebecca A. Marquardt of Centerville [Centreville, Queen Anne's County, MD], Joyce E. Gilliece of Ellicott City, Darlene A. Koch of St. Cloud, MN, Janet E. Tayler of Columbis and Karen M. Gosnell of Relay; a sister, Lucille Massey of Mardela Springs [Wicomico County, MD]; 14 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Rebecca: I am not related to Olands, that I know of at all. I have understandings with a few book dealers, that I will buy Bibles with family inscriptions from them, that are in such bad shape, they don't want to sell them publically. I then post the inscriptions and archive them in acid free boxes, with acid free tissue paper between some of the pages. I hope some day to be able to take classes on restoring old books, so I can make these treasures a little less fragile.
I also get Bibles from garage sales, used books stores, ebay, antique stores, Salvation Army stores, etc, so the inscriptions can be posted.

You can write to The Vasa Order of America in San Diego California about Warner Oland. The name was anglicized to be Oland, but someone in that order knows the whole story.

I'm trying to find a connection between Warner Oland and any Holmlunds from Umea, Sweden. I have been told he's related to my family (I'm a Holmlund) but you know how family stories are...

Can you give me info on his parents, other relatives? We are also related to Ekholms, Lundbergs, and Forsbergs.

I can't tell you where they came from, but i did buy the Bible from a PA book dealer. The inscriptions are done in a confusing manner, and i think most after the fact, not right away, although the later ones are in a different hand than the older ones. the
Bible is copyrighted 1884, and printed by Staley & Hawes, 907 arch St, Philadelphia, PA.

Warner Oland's mother's name was Maria Johanna Forsberg - so you just might be related! Let me know if you'd like more info.
