My grandmother's brother was named Herman Olberding, and he lived in Carroll, Iowa with his sister, Loretta. Neither married, and both were still living circa 1981. The Olberding farm in Carroll, Iowa was, I was told, one of the more successful and progressive farms in the area, acquiring electricity before any of the other farms. My grandmother was Mary Katherine Olberding; she married Frank Happe, who was a hired man for her father. They settled in Spirit Lake, Iowa and raised 8 children, my mother being the youngest. My grandmother's mother's maiden name was Osterhaus and it is my understanding that the Osterhaus family immigrated from Oldenburg, Germany. I have been told that my grandfather, Frank Happe, arrived in the U.S. on a banana boat from South America. If anyone can add to or correct my information, it would be very much appreciated.
