I'm hoping this still links to you. I do not have any Oldakers in my family but I do have a Marria and I am at a dead-end when it comes to finding any information pre-dating them. The names are not the same, but my g-g-grandfather is Stephen Marria of Sharpsville, PA. He married Mary Ellen Burke (name may have variations). Together they had Phillip, Margaret, Stephen, Matthew, Thomas and Winifred.

I don't believe we're of the same family but I'd appreciate any assitance you can offer tracing back on the Marria side. I've tried variations of Marria (Malia, O'Malley, etc), asked our priest (an Irishman) who thinks the name most likely is O'Malley (given the area they are from). If you can assist me or know a connection, please feel free to contact me at btschulze@hotmail.com

W. G. Oldaker and two sons arrested for moonshine

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 12 May 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA MOONSHINERS

A Quartet of Whisky Makers, a Still and Some Spirits Found

Grand: Sheriff Smith returned from Beason, this county, with four moonshiners - Ezra Mull, W. G. Oldaker and two sons. He also located the still, a half barrel of whisky and several gallons on mash. One of the Oldakers was captured after seven shots had been fired by the officer. A fifth member of the gang escaped.

Just how long the still has been in operation is not known, but the supposition is that at different times it has been in operation for months. The sheriff has endeavored for some time to locate the still and get the guilty parties.

I have now obtained the second marriage certificate of Annie Rosetta OLDAKER (nee OXBORROW). She married Henry Alfred WIGGINS on 02 June 1895 in Haggerston, London. Both parties described themselves as widowed. Hmm.

There was at least one child, Lilian Kate, from this second marriage. I am in touch with descendants of this child.

By the 1901 census both marriage partners are living apart with Henry WIGGINS describing himself as 'widower' (again) while Annie described herself as 'married' (by my count an understatement !)

By recent family recall, Frederick Louis OLDAKER did turn up on the scene eventually, having acquired a wooden leg in the interim, but the subsequent family dialogue is not recorded. Perhaps just as well.

If anyone can add to this or corroborate details of it I would be grateful.
According to the history of Putnam County, West Virginia,
It was Thomas Peyton that purchased 1,000 acres for .25cents an acre, sight unseen and sent his family. They had a wagon train. His daughter, Hannah, wife of Luke Wallace, son-in-law Harris, married to Mary, John, Isaac, Henry, William and Pascal were the first to arrive. Anyone know who this Thomas Peyton Was?
(This is not Peyton, son of Isaac)

I know a John Oldaker signed the surety when Hannah married, but that does not prove he was her father)

Who was Thomas Peyton?

William Oldaker b c1853, Essex, England

I'm looking for anyone you is able to help me find descendants of William. He married Jane Barnett in 1872 and they wne on to have a tribe of children who were born at various locations around London: Henry (1875), Ada Jane (c1877 - she married Edwin Francis), Albert (c1878), James (1881), Florence Ellen (c1883), Frederick Charles (1885) and Thomas (1887).

There was also a "son" attached to the family at the time of the 1901 census. He was a William and had been born in Woodford, Essex, where Jane's family had lived. As he was born before the marriage of Jane and William it is possible that he was not William's son.

If anyone has any information about this family I'd love to hear from you.

Lorraine

I am interested in finding how these families are related. On a given page of the 1850 Putnam Co Census, I find my ancestors, Stephen and Lucinda Cash. I have been under the assumption from other sources that her maiden name was BERCH. However, studying this one page, I find they are living in the middle, and probably on the property, of several BURCH's. Also, living in some of the households are Oldaker, Whittington, and Reice. Any help will be appreciated.

Ron

Yes. There is very little on the Booram branch, other than that of Hannah Booram who married Isaac Oldaker, but there is quite a bit on the other descendants of John & Martha as well as that of John's father Henry and the other children's family's.

The author is Edward L. Oldaker whom has posted to this list so you will be able to find an e-mail for him if you'd like a copy. I do know a Booram "cousin" just ordered a couple of copies from Ed, so perhaps he has a few more tucked away!
Linda Boorom
According to "The Oldacre/Oldaker Story" by Edward Oldaker, John was b. abt 1735. His 2nd wife was Martha, not Mary. The book speculates that she may have been a Tullos, but this may not be correct.

John's daughter Tamer Oldaker married John Booram ca 1785 Loudoun Co., and John's son Isaac Oldaker married John's sister Hannah Booram 16 Aug 1791 in Bedford Co VA.
Minnie Rosetta, born 20 February 1891 in Tottenham, was the daughter of Frederick Louis OLDAKER. Frederick Louis (or Louis Frederick as he sometimes disguised himself) married Annie Rosetta OXBORROW on 08 Sept 1884 in Hackney. They also had an older son, William Louis and a younger daughter Lily, at least.

Frederick Louis disappeared (to Canada ?) but returned to England some time and died 25 April 1942. In the interim, Annie Rosetta remarried, had children and I await her MC with interest .......... !

Contact me again if you need previous genealogy.

Dear Mr. Hall (Joseph)

You and I are double related. My great grandmother was Melinda Thomas Hall, the daughter of Joseph Jubal Hall.
Re: Oldaker Putnam Co., WV

Lisa,

You and I must be distant kin. My grandfather was Thomas R. Oldaker (great grandson of Peyton Oldaker). This story has not survived in my branch of the family, however the following information that I do have is very interesting. My mother (now 79) recalls that her grandfather, Pascal R. Oldaker (Peyton's grandson) was very dark skinned. She recalls a story told to her by her grandmother, Melinda Hall Oldaker, that when she (Melinda) first saw Pascal as a young boy she asked her mother who the little "colored" boy was. I have seen photos of Pascal (who was known as Doc) and indeed he was very dark skinned. Of course this proves absolutely nothing. One way to prove or disprove this "family myth" is by DNA testing. A living descendent of Peyton (and there are many) could have his/her DNA tested to determine if there is any Native American makers present. I don't know the cost, but I do know that many genealogist are now using DNA to establish relationships among family groups of the same last surname.

Let me know if you get this posting. Are you a related to a person my Mother knew as "Aunt Rean" Dodson?

Thanks
Tim L.
