I corresponded with Bill from 1997 until last year when he became really ill. If you would care to provide me with a snail mail address will be glad to send you what I have as I printed out most of his e-mails. He also sent me a CD which I have at our other home to which we will be returning the end of this month. Also have photos which I will be happy to copy & send along.
Always regretted that we did not have the opportunity to meet and talk face to face. His letters were so interesting & he was always so kind in providing information.
Do you have a copy of the Oldham coat of arms? He also sent that to me.
Susan
susancraig@centurytel.net

Looking for help with connecting Zera Oldham (1780-1844) to his Revolutionary Veteran father. Family history says that his name was William Oldham from NC.

Zera's daughter Eliza Leslie Oldham (8 Oct 1808-25 Apr 1883) was born in KY and died in Jackson Co., MO. She is buried with her husband John Rankin Whitsett.

Zera married Amelia Frances Collins.

There is a Alexander Dillard Collins aka Collens (1789-1855) b. KY d. Independence, Jackson Co., MO that is connected to George Oldham as witnesses in court records in KY or NC (can't remember)

Have found on Footnote:
p. 57 & 62 that connects George Oldham (Land Warrant Appl. No. S.21,906)
to George Oldham, James Oldham, John Oldham, Joe Oldham, Richard Oldham, Zera Oldham, Joseph Oldham, Janes Oldham and Monroe Morgan

Does anyone have a copy of this Land Warrant record?

I also believe that this James Oldham was either the son of this George, or the ?younger? brother of this George. Jan Oldham, researcher, has also speculated that George Oldham was "most likely" the brother of James as both apparently were overseers for John Smarr.

Many list Richard Oldham as the father of James Oldham ( was h/o Leah Stephens). From what I have found to date, there is no indication of this relationship, not even a naming pattern. I would love to know what the basis for this "connection" is => Why do so many folks list Richard Oldham as the father of this James? Is there a record that has been missed? If anyone on this board can answer my question... give me some direction ... it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,
Debra

Well that was quick!

I just started to look at my Longleys and Oldhams several weeks ago, but have found quite a bit so far. Just the other day received the War of 1812 Widow's Pension Application for Jonathan's service (from NARA) .... this led me to the James Oldham group. I understood that others listed James as her father, but was delighted to find her own statement, along with Joel Longley's statement!

Are you a descendant of Reuben? If so, I also have a couple of questions for you.

Would like your response regarding these Loudoun CO VA tax lists.

Please contact me directly andersondebra43@yahoo.com
&
Thank you for your response,
Debra

Would love to share and compare information. I have been researching this family for many years. In fact I have made plans to photograph the burial place of Reuben Longley, son of Jonathan and Sarah. I've often wondered if his grandparents family knew he was being held prisoner less than 50miles away from their homes in Fayette County, Indiana.

This is an old thread but hoping something comes of it...

I am researching 'my' James Oldham who marr to Leah Stephens on 2 Jan 1774 in Shelburne Parish, Loudoun CO, VA -- Marriage was performed by Rev. David Griffith. ((These marriages were found in Rev. Griffith's personal account book, in which he recorded his business transactions, salary paid to him (usually in pounds of tobacco) and the fees he received for performing marriages and funerals))

I am a descendant of this James & Leah Oldham by their daughter Sarah who marr Jonathan Longley (aka Langley). Some list this Jonathan Longley as Andrew Jonathan, but no record has been found to date that lists a given name Andrew or initial 'A'.

We know that James, along with his family, removed to Sevier CO TN, then finally to Fayette CO IND where he died 1827 (his will written & Prob).

I believe, based on the early tax lists of Loudoun CO VA, that my James who marr to Leah 1774, and died 1827 in Indiana, was the son of George who was of Loudoun CO early on. Please see below. I would like to exchange information with anyone researching this Oldham family.

Thank you for your time,
Debra Anderson

~*~*~*

NOTE: All the Oldham entries from the "Index to the 1758-1781 Loudoun Co.
I am directly related to the Oldhams from Stockport/Manchester area. My great grandfather was Orlando William Oldham who married Catherine Gee. They had 11 children and mostly resided in New Zealand. Orlando had a son Daniel who produced three boys; Daniel (Dooley), Albert (Bert - still alive) and Winter (Bill who resided in Denton and died in October last year). I am interested in any news about family and wondered if you have anything available?

Keith,

Thank you, this is certainly my John. However according to the Pleasley parish registers he is actually the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Oldham. Although he names his father as John Oldham on his marriage certificate I have been unable to find any other information pointing to John knowing who his father actually was.

Would you mind providing any information you may have on how your information was compiled or what sources were used? I would love to be pointed toward sources I have yet to research.

Cheers,
Christy Fillerup

I have Oldhams in Derbyshire a bit later in Pleasley and Northwingfield. Elizabeth Oldham is the mother of my third great-grandfather John Oldham, born 1823 in Pleasley. He was born illegitimately. I have yet to determine who Elizabeth's parents are. I would be happy to exchange information if you believe these two families are related.

Christy

Hi Keith

If you do get time to visit All Saints at Glossop, I have a small puzzle for you. The Glossop Local History Society have put some transcriptions of the registers online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dusk/gloss...
There's a christening on 9 Jan 1797 for Joseph Oldham born 3 Jun 1781, living Allmensheath/Stockport, mother Sarah Oldham, no father's name, Joseph apprentice to John Garside.
Can't find any other Joseph Oldhams that year.
Also, do you have a card for Joseph Oldham christened at St. Matthew's Hayfield on 22 Apr 1798, father William (mother probably Martha)? I need to confirm that this Joseph married Ann Wild 30 Mar 1823 Glossop. Otherwise I have too many Josephs!
Thanks so much
Jillian

Hi Keith
Thanks for all this wonderful information. Is it Marple Rd between Sandy Lane and New Mills Rd that I'm looking at? I can see rows of cottages on the satellite view like those in the Fatting Hay photo (see private message sent). Martha may have died young I'm sure your Dad had it right. He must have been working on that card file for many years. Joseph Oldham died at High St West, Whitfield 28 Sep 1873 in the presence of his son in law James Platt who lived at 273 High St West, a grocer's shop. Do you think that building would still be there? Also, if he followed the naming conventions, his parents may have been Ann and Joseph, just a guess, but would there by chance be a card for an older Joseph and his family?
a very grateful
Jillian

Hi Keith

Thankyou for your kind offer and yes, I would love photos! Joseph must have had brothers and sisters and perhaps parents names may be found there, but I have no idea who they were. I have ten children, so perhaps I've a stray one in here somewhere.....Ann 1823, Joseph 1824, William 1826 (to Australia), Wright 1828, Elizabeth 1829, Eliza 1831 (same person?), Athaniel 1833, Mark 1837, Aaron 1838 (to America),and Moses 1842. Joseph married again late in life after Elizabeth died, to Ruth Large. Also I have his 1841 address as Fattinghey Chisworth. Is that just my misreading the old writing?

Thanks so much for your help
Jillian

Interesting about the Pleasley entry. Does it actually say he is illegitimate? I had thought this was perhaps the John Oldham and Elizabeth whose marriage is registered at Sherbrook in 1821. The info I gave earlier is, as you say, from John's (b 1823) marriage. He may have invented a father to legitimise himself. There may be a marriage after his birth (which I haven't looked for yet). I'd be interested in any other info you have (cos I love puzzles - lol)
Keith

Hi Jillian, The card for Joseph, bap 3 June 1797 covers both sides; unfortunately it doesn't show his parents! He was baptised at All Saints, Glossop. That is only 6 miles away and, if the records are still there, I can check the entry for any clues if you like, although I suspect Dad would have written any down anyway. I take it you have his marriage to Elizabeth Hall (b. Chinley 1796 dau of William Hall (b 1771)) and details of their 9 children? Tatton Bay, Charlesworth has gone but the farm at Gamesley and 9, Sumner's Place still exist. I can take photos if you like.
Meanwhile I'll keep looking!
Hi Jillian,
My father didn't have Mark or Moses. As a late addition (written in pen on his typed card) he has Martha born 11 May 1836. I think Athaniel might be Nathaniel. Ruth was born in Edale in 1806, in case you don't have that already. You're right about 1841. In my father's defence I can only say he was working in the local library back in the 70's and 80's using scratchy microfilm on dirty-lens readers! It's much clearer on ancestry and having looked at each page I think it's Fatting Hay. This is a puzzle until I can examine the old maps at Stockport, especially as there are so many people there. Looking at the places on either side and the fact that so many people there are colliers I think I've narrowed it down. If you Google Map Grid Lane, Chisworth you will see that Smithy Lane joins it from the South. Near this junction, on the north side, was an open cast hand-worked coal mine which was working well into the 1950s or so, was reopened later but is worked out now. The general area here has long been known as Ludworth Moor. The seam ran north west and reappeared where the A626 crossed it between Ernocroft Lane and Boarfold Lane. The cottages here were certainly there in 1841 (I used to live in one of them three years ago!) There are five at that point. There would have been a lot more around Ernocroft Lane and this area generally. Ernocroft is named after the coal mine and mill owner (as is Ernocroft Wood). But, given the field area it could well have been known earlier as Fatting Hay. It is fertile grassland on this side of the hill, rather than the moorland of Ludworth. The area is between Sandy Lane and Holehouse, as it is in the census return. Again I can take photos of the area. There is also a pamphlet about the mine itself and I can snail-mail a copy if it's of interest.
As you say, Joseph must have had brothers and/or sisters. I'll see what I can find.
Keith

Sorry - got no James Oldham in my tree of that date. The same Oldham family links into 3 different parts of my tree - all based in Hyde, Cheshire where my Pickford family came from. That's quite unusual - we have a lovely portait of Priscilla Oldham - mid 1800's.

Trouble with the US censuses is that they never said which part of England they came from so you can really only track from the UK to USA and not the other way round!

Could you direct me to a census that shows all three brothers and parents living together or birth dates of your uncles, just something I can look at that shows Eugene's relationship to your uncles. Sorry, I know I am being a pain, but really want to get this photo album to the rightful family. If you prefer here is my email, etakathy@aol.com

Not sure if related to your George Oldham. I haven't been able to trace where my GG grandfather James Oldham (born abt 1831 in England)came from in England. He married Jane Pilling in Pennsylvania (she was born in Pennsylvania abt 1835 --the daughter of Thomas and Mary Pilling both born in England) . James and Jane's children were George Pilling Oldham -born abt.1856(my G-grandfather), Jane b 1858, Albert b 1859, Mary b 1864.

Granville was my grandfather's father. I'm interested in any research you have. According to our history, though, Granville was born in Shelby Co Indiana. As for John, all we know is that he came over from Ireland. Was he Irish, or an Englishman who sailed from there? (FYI Elizabeth Floyd's parents were James Floyd and Martha Hume..if you don't have that one.

Diana Oldham
