County Cork Ireland O'leary family

I have my Jerimiah O'leary- b. 11 Jan. 1801 d. 22 Apirl 1850 (dropsy) was a Stonemason

State of South Carolina Petition of Jerry O'leary petioner York District, was born in Ireland, the County of Cork and did arrive Norfolk in the State of Virginia in 1821. Hath resided in the US eversince within the Jurisdicion of this state for the past 2 yrs and is now 25 yrs of age and intention to become citizen 23 Oct. 1824

Then have come across these letters which mention his sister Ellen and brother Dan. I am wondering if anyone has connections in Ireland to help me out:

29 July 1829, Sullivan[']s Island, Ellen O[']Leary, to Jeremiah O[']Leary, Yorkville (commenting on the recent illness of "my best friend in America Mr. Simons" who "was taken verry sick with a Paralytic Fit," and urging her brother to remove to Charleston where he could "get employment as Bricklayers are verry scarse in town [and] the People complain of their bad work").
5 Aug. 1829, Sullivan[']s Island, Ellen O[']Leary, to Jeremiah O[']Leary, Yorkville (scolding her brother for his lack of written communication and congratulating him upon his forthcoming marriage on behalf of Mr. Simons and Mrs. Ball).
15 Oct. 1830, Charleston, Ellen O[']Leary, to Jeremiah O[']Leary, [Yorkville] (mentioning their brother, Dan, recently arrived from Ireland, who needed money in order to travel to Yorkville, and reminding him of his promise made six years earlier upon leaving Ireland—"you brought God to wittness that you would be a Father and a protector to me in the Land of strangers").

I also have not been able to trace Ellen and Dan in the US. Most likely because If Ellen was married it was not recorded or perhaps Ellen and Dan used different spellings of O'Leary.
but I would also like to find the Ireland Connection.

thank you
Kquerna
Hi, Unfortunately you stumbled upon a board full of those who are transcribing records vial the World Archives Project. Primarily what this board is for is questions about transcription rules, and various aspects of the project. While I wish you luck in your research, you are unlikely to find family connections here.

Hello fellow researchers!

After attending last year's O'Leary Clan reunion in Inchigeelagh, Co. Cork, the homeland of the O'Learys I met a Daniel Bhui O'Leary in Kiskeam, Co. Cork and he agreed to participate in our O'Leary Clan DNA project. His test results came back with a six generation match with my DNA (about 150 years) and verified that I am a descendant of the Jeremiah Bhui O'Leary Clan of Tooreenanean, b. 1751, and father of the poet Maire Bhui O'Leary, b. 1774, whose youngest brother Richard, b. 1795 may have been my grt.grt.grf. Furthermore, our family historian Peter O'Leary in Ballingeary, with whom I also share a ten generation DNA match has researched the Bhui clan back to an O'Leary Chieftain in the late 1400's who had four sons in the early 1500's Cornelius, (Conchobhar) Daniel, (Domnhall) Jeremiah (Diarmuid) & Timothy. (Teighe or Tadgh) Peter descends from Cornelius and I descend from Daniel, along with Kiskeam Dan. This leads me to believe that Terry O'Leary in England and Mike O'Leary in Australia & I also share the Bhui ancestry, along with a few others on our DNA chart, and our roots go back to Bantry (Ardnaturrish) & Wales. (Dowlais, Monmouthshire) I'm still looking for my grt.grf. Michael's roots and have narrowed it down to two theories, which I won't get into now. Of course Terry & I have always known that we are related because his daughter Clare is a clone of one of my aunts, and he resembles my 2nd cousin Tom.

I have been looking over a few hundred old O'Leary website inquiries, all of which instigated this report. If there are any more of you out there who can claim a Bhui connection I would like to hear from you. Please contact me at dbjoleary@aol.com

Thanks.

Don

Re: Sylvester O'Leary

Go to free www.familysearch.org. On the "Search Records" tab find "Record Search Pilot" (it seems to work best with Mozilla Firefox web browser). Since you gave enough info in your post I did a search on Sylvester Oleary and a search location of New York (When you enter a location you need to wait a second and then the program will give you suggested places and you must select one of these.) After that I got one page of Sylvester Oleary/Leary/Olary/Lary's (there's alot of variations of Olearys) and there he was in Cohoes. I figured that must be him. People do move around but generally not to much. Also Sylvester and Lawrence are not common first names so there's not a lot of them. With the info you gave it made it easy to narrow down.
Once I had an approximate birth year and where they were born that made it all the more easier. I just did a quick look so I'm sure there's more info out there.

Good Luck
Mike

You will find Sylvester b. 1889 and Genevieve b. 1891 living with their father Lawrence b. 1852 in the 1900 census for Cohoes district, Albany Co., New York. They are listed under surname "Leary". You will also find Lawrence living with his parents Lawrence and Ann in the 1870 census of Cohoes, Albany Co, New York and in the 1860 census of Herkimer Co., New York. In the 1860 census the surname is "O Lary". Unforunately Lawrence's wife is not listed in the 1900 census which means she either died or left after Genevieve was born in 1891.

Good Luck
Mike

The Shea names is often seen as a sponsor for my O'Leary/Leary family and St. Illtyd's was their Church, and later Immaculate Conception in Sirhowy.
My GGGF Thomas Leary was abt born abt. 1824 in Cork (no townland, sorry to say) and married Catherine Downey, also Cork about 1826-36. Not sure if marriage in Ireland or Wales--unable to locate certificate in Wales. Don't have a clue how or where to search Ireland.
However, they are on the 1851 Wales census in Tredegar, SIrhowy.
I don't know if Daniel had a brother by that name, however I'm fairly certain he had a brother James. On Daniel's marriage certificate he gives his father's name as Dennis and one of the witnesses is James O'Connell. Daniel and his wife Johanna(O'Leary) name their first born son Dennis and their next and last son James as is the Irish custom at the time. Also, my Daniel gives his place of birth as Ireland. Sorry it took me so long to respond. My e-mail has changed and I wasn't notified as I evidently neglected to change it in this format.

In reply to your message of Feb. 2001, do you have any dates
at all, as I am looking also for my Great GreatGrandfather who's
name was Keady O'Leary, from Castletownbere, Co. Cork,
which is under the Bantry area for mail etc.-
There is no doubt some relation with all these Keady's, as the name of the father is usually past down from one
generation to the next.
I am interested in any additional information you may have.
Somehow, somewhere I think we are connected after reviewing all of the messages on this board, especially with those of you who have a Richard Leary or O'Leary in your tree. I know I'm connected to Terry O'Leary in the UK & Dan O'Leary in New Jersey USA and possibly with Tom Leary in Boston USA via our O'Leary DNA Project and share a common ancestor(s) back about 1800/1815 (with Tom about 1780) but so far we haven't been able to find the guy, especially a Richard. The Wales connection is our best shot so here I go again.

Grt. Grt. Grandfather Richard Leary, b. circa 1800 (1795 - 1810) county unknown. Grt. Grf. Michael Leary, b. circa 1831, County Kerry, Ireland, (possibly the Killarney area)according to Wales census records. Mike migrated to Wales during or just after the famine, married Johanna Sullivan in 1855, St. Iltyds, Dowlais, Wales. Parents of Johanna were Patrick Sullivan & Ellen Moriarity, both born Co. Kerry 1807 & 1811, as was Johanna, circa 1840, her siblings Ellen, 1845 & Jeremiah, 1847. Richard was recorded on their wedding certificate as father of the groom and was a farm labourer. Mike and Johanna had eight kids in Wales, most of whom were born in Victoria, where all the boys worked in the iron mills of the Merthyr Tydvil Valley area of Monmouthshire. Names were Michael Patrick, Ellen, Mary Ann, John, Thomas, Catherine, Willam & Joanna. (Anna)

All eventually migrated to America between the years 1881 & 1890 (except for Patrick & Ellen Sullivan & Grt. Aunt Ellen who are buried in Ebbw Vale, Wales) and settled in Sharon & New Castle, PA to work in the steel mills of western PA. Grt. Grm. Johanna's sister Ellen (Deasy/Dacey) had come over late 1770's to Sharon.

Have not been able to find any siblings of g.grf. Mike or g.g.grf. Richard, or who Richard was married to but hope that someone out there on these message boards has information that will locate that needle in the haystack that I don't have many more years to look for. Please contact me at dbjoleary@aol.com because I don't get to the boards that often. (Can never remember my user name or password when I do) Hopefully your ancestors were related and came over the pond at an earlier date. Family rumors have a couple of my clan going "down under" but no info on who they were or what generation.

Thanks. Don in Indianapolis, IN USA

They apparentle left Ireland due to the Potato Famine and lived in Liverpool. He was a shipwright and she raised the family. One of the census I found him on has his last name as Seary ans I also have one with him listed as Leary. I have very little information on them and am looking for their parents also. Any information would help me if you don't mind sharing. If you can help thank you and please email me at xshyone1@aol.com.

I am trying to discover whether Daniel Geoffrey Leary b. ? poss Middlesex c. 1827, poss d. about 1866 and Martha Sainsbury b. Middlesex c. 1830 were my ggrandmother's parents. Poss married 1851. Daniel was a silk dyer (1861 census). My ggrandmother was always known in our family as Annie O'Leary. On her marriage certificate she is Annie Leary prior to her marriage to Henry Ward, and her father's occupation was Dyer (Daniel Leary was by then deceased). I have not found any other Daniel with a daughter called Ann who was a silk dyer except for this Daniel. .In the 1861 census they are Oleary. I have not yet tracked down a birth registration for Ann Oleary or Leary (or indeed O'Leary) around 1853-5. But then another ggrandmother from a good church going background never had a birth registration either - it was prior to the days when it was illegal not to register a birth. Deemed OK if the baby was christened. After Daniel died Martha was married to a William Duffy, b. c. 1818 in Dublin, who had been married to Louisa Duffy, b. around 1815 in Soho. William was a 'garment dyer', and I'm asssuming he worked with Daniel. Martha & William's spouses must have died around the same time. I can understand why she m. about a year after Daniel died - she had quite young children. A baby Duffy was born - aged 3 in 1871. Can anyone help me make the connection with my Ann or Annie? Does anyone know who Daniel's parents might have been - possible Irish? Also I can't find Ann or Annie in 1871 but she would be 18 by then - so many young women of same nam and age in London. On 1881-1901 censuses Annie was born either at St James, Westminster or Pancras (Martha Sainsbury was b. St James, Westminster, ANY HELP TO ASSIST THE CONNECTION GRATEFULLY RECEIVED!

Hi Kathydevere,
Unfortunately I have no knowledge of which leary (O'Leary) Sept my family came from.
My g.grandfather John Leary dob.4.11.1834 was born in Ardaturrish and attended St.Finbarr Church, Bantry. His father was a Jeremiah Leary dob 13.11.1808, who married Elizabeth Coughlan. I have no information on Jeremiah's or John's siblings. John went to live in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales pre. 1857.
He married Ellen Shea, in St. Illtyds Church, Dowlais on 18.8.1857.They had eight children, one of whom, who was a twin, was a Denis O'Leary, born 1875, who was my grandfather. They, John and Ellen, had begun using the name O'Leary for the children.
I'm afraid that Mandy Bautz does not appear to figure in my family.
I hope that this is helpful to you, and that maybe you can find a link.
Best regards,
Mike O'Leary (Mikeol 1)

San Francisco O'Leary's

My grandfather Frank was born in SF in 1923. His father Frank and mother Rose Meany were born in SF as well. Both parents died when he was young and was raised by his step-mother Ruth. I've done some searching in Census records and have found some O'Learys in SF during the 1800's and the Frank that is listed is about the age of my great-grandfather. Ellen was the mother, and sibling were John, Jeremiah, Joseph and Ella. Does anyone have any connections that could help me in my search?

Thanks,
Mike O'Leary

Timothy O'Leary, New York City, 1820s.

Hope someone can help. I am researching Timothy O'Leary. He was in New York City by the 1820's, as a daughter was born there in 1829 and another about 1834. By the mid 1830s he was in Cornwall, Orange County, New York, where he died in 1875. He had a second wife in Cornwall, and two more daughters. Census records say he was born in Ireland about 1795. A gravestone for his second daughter has his first wife's name as Sarah. His second wife was Magdalena. I have been unable to check the 1835 New York state census. I have been unable to find him in New York City. There are numerous naturalization records for Timothy O'Leary, but I do not know which, if any of them, are him. Any suggestions? Thanks!!
