Obituary James Olive d.1893 Cambridge Mass.

I am looking for information on the descendants of James & Mary (Clark)Olive. I am descended from Mary's brother John Griffin Clark.

May 3 1893
County Saint John
Place Saint John
Newspaper The Daily Sun

A despatch was received by Charles F. olive yesterday announcing the death of his father, james olive at Cambridge, Mass. where he had been on a visit to his son. Mr. olive was at one time one of the leading men of St. John. He was a native of Carleton. His father, the late William olive, was one of the firm which carried on an extensive shipbuilding at Carleton years ago. There were several brothers in the firm and it is doubtful if any one concern in New Brunswick ever constructed such a large number of vessels as the olives. When a lad, james olive entered the dry goods store of Solomon NICHOLLS, who was at one time President of the Bank of New Brunswick. Afterwards Mr. olive worked in the office of Stephen Wiggins & Son as a clerk. As he did not fancy this business, Mr. olive went to work for his father and served his time in the shipyard. The firm at this time was Wm olive & Sons. In 1851 Mr. olive was elected councillor for Guys Ward, John C. Littlehale being the alderman for the ward. In the following year, Mr. olive succeeded Mr. Littlehale and in 1853 he was chosen mayor of the city by the council. The other candidates for the mayoralty were the late Isaac Woodward and the late Gregory Vanhorne. During the year a new law was passed under which the chief magistrate of the city was to be chosen by the ratepayers. In 1854, Mr. olive was re-elected, defeating the late W.O. Smith and Mr. olive was the last mayor chosen by council and the first elected by the people. The following year Mr. olive refused to offer and he was shortly afterwards appointed by the government of the province one of the water commissioners of Carleton. The other commissioners were the late Frederick Coster and the late Joseph Beatteay. After the completion of the water system Mr. olive was appointed chairman of the water commision, a position that he has held for several years. In 1865 Mr. olive built a grist mill near the place where the Hayward & Stetson mill now stands. He ran this mill until it was destroyed by fire some three years afterwards. Mr. olive then resumed work in the old shipyard and turned out some fine vessels. As this business became unrenumerative Mr. olive stopped work and about 15 years ago removed to Fairville, having been appointed parish court commissioner for Lancaster. Mr. olive married Mary C. CLARK d/o the late Ebenezer CLARK of Yarmouth, N.S. and a cousin of thr late John CLARK who carried on a very extensive lumbering business at Carleton. They have seven children living: Ebenezer olive, druggist of Cambridge, Mass; Wm olive, manager of a mill in Michigan; james W. olive who lives in Cambridge, Mass.; Chas. F. olive of (St. John) city; Douglas olive, druggist of Cambridge, Mass.; Mrs. A.J. CANN and Mrs. Norman A. WYMAN of Yarmouth, N.S. The remains will be brought to this city for burial.

Source:http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/NewspaperVitalStats

OLIVE, MILTON L. III

Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Army, Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade. Place and date: Phu Cuong, Republic of Vietnam, 22 October 1965. Entered service at: Chicago, Ill. Born: 7 November 1946, Chicago, Ill. C.O. No.: 18, 26 April 1966. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Pfc. Olive was a member of the 3d Platoon of Company B, as it moved through the jungle to find the Viet Cong operating in the area. Although the platoon was subjected to a heavy volume of enemy gunfire and pinned down temporarily, it retaliated by assaulting the Viet Cong positions, causing the enemy to flee. As the platoon pursued the insurgents, Pfc. Olive and 4 other soldiers were moving through the jungle together with a grenade was thrown into their midst. Pfc. Olive saw the grenade, and then saved the lives of his fellow soldiers at the sacrifice of his by grabbing the grenade in his hand and falling on it to absorb the blast with his body. Through his bravery, unhesitating actions, and complete disregard for his safety, he prevented additional loss of life or injury to the members of his platoon. Pfc. Olive's extraordinary heroism, at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty are in the highest traditions of the U.S. Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of his country.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Lexington, Mississippi
Cemetery: West Grove Baptist Church Cemetery

Born: 1946 Chicago, IL

Died: 1965 Killed in Action -- Awarded Posthumously.

Additional Information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_go/olive...

Note: This is not my ancestry. I believe they had 9 children but I only know of 3: Sally Marie b. 1909, Lee Edward b.1911 in Cottonwood, Huston Co, Alabama and Hilda b. 1913 (?)

Any info on his parents or any other children would be very helpful, I've been unable to go any further back in the Olive line. Thanks.

Maggie Elnora OLIVE (SMITH > NEWMAN): 1900s TX, USA

Hi, I know this will sound strange but aftter many years one mystery has been solved only to open new questions.
I have looked for years for information on the death of my Grandmother. Her name was Maggie Elnora Smith. She married Henry Newman and they had my Mother. Soon after Maggie left Henry and her daughter (VC Evelyn). She was know to have been in Corpus Christi area for a while about 1951 living with a man named Charles Moon. This was where I was looking for her.
This week a cousin found one of my postings. She knew my Grandmother! She also had her death date (7/12/1955)and place of death ) Merkel TX>) ! What JOY! Now I find out that the name on her head stone says Maggie E. Olive.
No one seems to know anything about this new twist of events. I am hoping some one here might know. Could my Mother have a brother or sister she knows nothing about? Do any of you have a unaccounted for wife for your Olive named Maggie, Elnora, or Nora? She often went by the nick name Todie too.
Any help or light you can shed would be wonderful!
Thanks in advance.

Carol

13 September 1892 Dallas Morning News, p. 5

TAYLOR, Tex., Sept. 12 – Sheriff John T. Olive died at 5:30 o’clock this morning. His wife and family having arrived from Georgetown yesterday evening, the funeral took place at 4 o’clock this afternoon. Elder J. B. Sweeney preached the funeral service at the new Christian church. The Taylor fire department, together with the Masons and Knights of Pythias, of which organizations he was a member, turned out in uniform and the procession to the grave was the largest ever seen in Taylor.

Bold, fearless and intrepid, he was admired and honored by the law abiding class and scorned by violators of the law, at whose hands he no doubt fell. All the stores and places of business in the city remained closed this afternoon during the progress of the funeral.
In the James Olive Family book on page 150, mention is made of the 1840 Wake Co., NC Census which is said to list Sarah Olive as the head of family. Sarah/Sally Hartsfield Olive was the widow of James Olive who had died at some time following the 1830 Census of Wake Co., NC in which he had been listed as the head of family. I have located the 1830 Census, but I cannot for the life of me find Sarah (or Sally) Olive listed in the 1840 Census. Does anyone have the Page and Line number for her listing in the 1840 Census?

Searching for parents and sibs of my great-grandmother, Mary Sophronia OLIVE, who married Richard Huston BURRESS. She is buried in Martin Cemetery in Mablevale, ARK. Recently saw an early spelling as Maplesville, ARK. Huston BURRESS was from Selmer or Ramer TN. His father is buried just outside of Corinth, MS. Gfather BURRESS is buried in Grapevine Cemetery, Grant Co. ARK. Family lore has it that there was so much overflow water when he died in 1927 that they could not get his body back to Pulaski Co, Ark. for burial at Martin Cemetery. Does any one have any info. on her? She had two girls, Myrtle Naomi, (born 16OCT1883-Died 1949) was my gmother and she married James David WYLES (1885-1968). Her sister, Donia Mae, was 12 years younger and married Arthur RAMICK. Will share info with anyone. mnichols@ipa.net.
Mary Ann Nichols
