Hello Trish,
How great that you posted to the list. Are you a descendant of Martin F. Bruce? If so we are cousins a time or two removed.

How remarkable that the Bruce House was built with ship building technology. When Martin's older brother August Freidrich Bruce built a house at 352 Scott Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he too used ship building techniques.

Of course ship-building and ship-caulking, as well as sailing, were the traditional occupations of the Bruce men.

There were three brothers. The oldest, August F. Bruce, stayed in Milwaukee, married Apollonia Becker and had nine children including my great-grandfather Martin P. Bruce. Martin F. Bruce went to Florida, married Margaret Ollinger and had five children. The youngest brother, John, went to the San Francisco and Oakland area of California, worked as a ship caulker and apparently never married.

I am happy to share more about the Bruce family if you are interested. Why not write to me at barbara_petura @ yahoo.com [remove the spaces in the address].

Thanks again for posting.
Barbara
