Oh my gaw! Okay, I see. lol. You KNEW my grandmother. Aww. Reeny. I remember that now. Her name wasn't really "Sorenia," was it? :OP

I love my tough-old bird Aunties too. You heard that Patty had a stroke but is, last I heard, doing better? I wrote to her daughter, my cousin, yesterday, asking after her.

My email address is superliberalgirl@gmail.com.

It's nice to meet you Cynthia, and thanks again.

Laura:

Send me your email address (mine is cmcdonald.home@gmail.com) and I'll email you an Ahnentafel or some other chart of what I have. It will explain all the names you don't recognize, but Renie (don't know if I have the correct spelling but pronounced "Ree-nee"), is what everyone called Sorenia. Too bad you have missed out on the Huffman gatherings. I love your aunts Patty, Shirley and Ruthie!

Cynthia

Wow. I keep getting chills, reading what you've sent me!

Believe it or not, until last week all I knew was that I probably had Norwegian ancestry, and it was probably through my paternal grandfather's family (we always assumed, wrongly, that it was through the Huffman line.) I didn't even have a name (my father guessed Mary) for my great grandmother until this week. My paternal grandfather died when I was about 6 years old. I have very few memories of him, and had only heard tales of his grandmother's flaming red hair. None of my father's six siblings nor he have red hair, but they nearly all have red-headed children (usually one per family). We too have observed the skipping of generations pattern. :O)

I am glad you confirmed for me that Gunder had married a pair of sisters. I wasn't sure if I was making that connection correctly here while researching, and even thought there was probably just a name mistake in the records. And, I take it is (or was) traditional in Norway for a son's last name to be his father's first name plus "son" and a daughter's to be the father's first name, plus "daughter?" This is all so new to me; I want to do it right. And, you may know, is there some way for me to view public trees where the complete Olson/Huffman familial lines have already been researched with a fair bit of certainty, due to more familiarity to the family, that what they've included is correct? It's a little unnerving having nothing to cross-reference what I find with. Past Gundar and Gjartrude, I just keep thinking, "they COULD be my ancestors."

I am glad you wrote me about Susan's middle name. I liked it because it was unique! I think you are definitely correct in that census takers made a lot of mistakes. If it wasn't an overly common name, there was potential there for them to get it wrong. Also, people tended to shed names and spellings over their lifetimes back then. They didn't have an electronic file following them around, pulling them back to the original all the time, like we do.

I should be up-front right now and say that I have not heard of Dick, Suni, or Rennie, or even your husband Rick! lol. I'm sure he's lovely. Do you think he is a distant cousin of mine? And I am sorry for your family that Dick (this is Rick's father?) is not in well health. I hope he is as comfortable as can be expected, regardless.

I will have to track down my dad and ask him what he knows about his family. He was the youngest in his large family, and I was born during his second marriage when he was in his late thirties, so, with both of us being kind of like familial after-thoughts, we're out of the loop in a lot of ways. I have not had any experiences with large family reunions or holidays together, and thus I have never met a single one of my relatives from the Huffman extended family.

And, my grandfather's name was Paul Gladstone Huffman. Is that to whom you were referring?

If you'd like to see (I realize this is probably more interesting to me than it is anyone else), I have attached a copy of the "cleaned up" version of your wonderful photo of Susan and her parents (they all have such a mirthful little smile on their faces!). I am a bit of an armchair art and costuming historian (my background is in the arts/theatre), and I really wanted to see what his coat looked like. And, as far as the eyebrows and eyes...they had their own version of "photoshop" back then, where, eyes especially, were drawn in later. The exposure time needed to take old photos was quite long comparatively to now, and people blinked, or their eyes moved, and they came out blurry. Interestingly, Susan's eyes came out quite clear, and you can see they were blue, as probably were her parents. :)

While I was working on it, I could vaguely see written above Gunder and Gartrude's heads their names, in what looks like pencil. I figured the baby's name was there too, but try as I did, I couldn't bring it out. I'm glad there was an inscription on the back, that settles things.

And, I understand the ravages of time, children and pens. I remember being quite naughty and doodling on old photos as a really little kid. It's kind of irresistible to them. lol. Like crayons on walls.

With thanks to you, and regards to all in my extended and distant Olson/Huffman family,

Laura

Dear Laura:

Susan's middle name was Caratine according to her death record. I've seen the name Caroline used by census takers, and I've seen other researchers use that name, but since the information on a death certificate is something that comes from relatives (probably a son or daughter), I have gone with that. Susan's youngest son is still living, but he is unsure of her middle name, but doesn't feel it was Caroline. Caratine is not a common Norwegian name, but not unusual either. I've seen it from time to time in the Bygdeboks (the Norwegian farm records). As you will find, census takers were inclined to write many things that weren't correct. Literacy was a real problem!

Susan was one of the younger children, but you must remember that Gjartrud was Gunder's second wife. When his first wife Sigvor died, and Gunder sent to Norway for her sister Gjartrud. I have the wooden trunk that he built and shipped to Norway so she could bring her belongings over. Also, I believe that someone had written on the back of the photo that it was Susan, Gunder and Gjartrud. It is one of the few photos that actually have some sort of identification on it. Susan and Carl were Gjartrud's kids; Della and the others were Sigvor's.

I tried cleaning up that photo, as I have done with so many of the others, but I was afraid I would damage it further. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the photos, they had been stored in cardboard boxes for years, and time, silverfish and grandchildren had all had a go at them. I have no idea who added pupils and eyebrows, but they should have left well enough alone. Too bad...they are so lovely. I have the protected now, you can be sure!!

Dick, Susan's youngest son (and my father-in-law) says that Susan was a redhead. Only one of his daughter's inherited it, but she also has a daughter who is also a redhead. It seems to be a generation skipping trait.

I hope this helps out. There are relatives in Iowa and Minnesota who have researched this line for years (one of Della's daughters was a major contributor in the effort). I have a letter from one of them that I will post soon. It has Dick's address on it, and I didn't want to release any personal information until he passes. I don't know if you were at Suni's memorial -- perhaps it was your sister -- but Dick has gone down hill the last few months. Sadly, he won't be with us much longer.

Good luck with your research. Oh, if you have any good photos of Paul and Renie, can you please post them or email them to me? I have a photo from when we visited Renie up north years ago, but I wish I had a photo of them and the old house in Costa Mesa. Also, the only photo I have of Paul (besides the big family photo) is one of him asleep after having lunch (his practice was to take a nap after eating). That would be a little strange to post, but I suspect some of the relatives would get a kick out of it.

Cynthia McDonald (Rick Huffman's wife)
cmcdonald.home@gmail.com

I can't tell you all how excited I am to find this post. Thank you for all your hard work and research, it's aiding me so much in mine ( I just signed up two days ago).

It's AMAZING to finally see photos of ancestors you've only heard vague lore about (even more amazing to see how much your current relatives look like them). My paternal great-grandfather was of this family; His mother was Susan Caroline Olson (unless Caratine is a common Scandinavian name, I suspect that it came from a misreading of her name on a census, I read it Caroline, and that's when I connected the dots to that possibility - maybe someone here knows more about this?).

I've been looking at a particular photo of Gartrude and Gunter with the baby on their lap for most of the night, as I decided to correct the damage done to his jacket in photoshop. The more I think about it, the less I think the baby is Susan, as it was labeled. Wasn't she one of the younger children? Their first-born was a girl too, Della (?), and the Olsons certainly do look young in this photo; Perhaps too young to have worked their way through several other children and then look so un-aged in a photo with Susan so young. What do you think?

I also suspect that they both were red-headed. That would explain why he appears brunette, but with a much lighter beard (or he could just have had a prematurely greying beard! :) , as well as her apparent lack of eyebrows (they were too blond to be seen in the photo, and I think someone tried to draw them on...bad ancient photshop! lol. My sister is redheaded and her eyebrows are there, but are so baby-blond they are almost invisible). What do you think?

Thank you again!

Laura Huffman

Hi, Kristen.

I have some suggestive information for you, but it is not conclusive, because there is not enough information available at this point to be sure this is your ggrandfather.

On April 17, 1884, a Thorvald Olsen age 23 (born 1860 or 1861), residing in Kristiansand, Vest-Agder, emigrated from Norway via the Thingvalla Line. He is listed as married ("G" for gift which means married". Link through the digitalarkivet is here: http://www.digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=vi...

This Thorvald Olsen is listed on the passenger manifest for the SS Geiser of the Thingvalla Line arriving on May 2, 1884 at Castle Garden in NY. His destination is shown as Chicago. He is shown on Line 766 (although it looks like 66 because they only put the 7 before the first of each ten, like 760) on the last page of the manifest. This can be accessed through www.stephenmorse.org, scroll down to Castle Garden Ships Lists and click, put in the ship's name and arrival date and click "search", then scroll through the 20 pages of manifest to the last page.

He was not traveling with his wife.

If you haven't seen the 1900 census, your family is shown as living at 1001 Kimball Ave., Chicago - Thorvald, b Aug 1860, age 40, arrived 1885; wife Miern (surely a misspelling) b May 1856, arrived 1887; son Ivar born Jan 1888, Chicago; daughter Signie, born Oct. 1890, Chicago; son Arthur, born May 1894, Chicago.

I'll let you know if I can find anything more. Please let me know if I have duplicated anything you already know.

Regards,
Anne

Finding your great-grandfather was a challenge, because there was not a lot of information. However, the key was the name change to Soberg.

I first found him with his grandmother in the 1900 census in Stange, Hedmark on the Søberg farm with his grandmother, Tillie Andersen, born 1842 in Vang, Hedmark (he is listed as Torolf Olsen, "datterson" - daughter's son). You can find this here: http://www.digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=vi...

From there, I was able to trace his christening record based on the birth date and location (many of the church records have been scanned and are available only). Here is a link to his christening record in Vang, Hedmark:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?urnread_imagesize=full...

His father was Olaf Olsen, born 1870, his mother was "Pige" Lina Larsdatter, born 1875 (I believe the Pige is to indicate she was unmarried). He was born Jan 3, 1896 (amazing that that date was right all along - usually they get botched), christened on Jan. 26, 1896. The witnesses were Kone (Mrs) Ingeborg Olsdatter Gulkerud, Pige (Miss) Lina Mikkelsdatter.

If I can find any more information about this family, I'll let you know.

Regards
Anne
Olsen Family from Norway

I am looking for information on my great grand uncle. He emigrated from Norway to the US in 1895. His name was Tobias Olsen Breilid. He was born in 1870 in Bjelland Parish, Vest-Agder County.

I don't know anything about what happened to him, but I have an old photo of him that was taken by R. Thelon on 262 Columbia Street, Brooklyn, New York. Rumors also had it that when his brother, my great grandfather, was in New York he met Tobias in New York. If this meeting did happen it must have been between 1898 and 1900.
So I suppose it is most likely to assume he had settled in New York.

Will appreciate any help I can get! Thank You!

Osmund Tønnesland, Norway

Margaret Nichol England to IL

Looking for any information about Margaret Nichol born about 1900 in England (possibly Hirst). Her father was Henry Nichol and her mother's name was Elizabeth.
She had several siblings Mary J, George, James, Sarah, Henry Jr (all these sibs b. England), Ruby, Elizabeth, and Helen (last three born IL).
Looks like this family first came to USA in 1893. Stayed a short time and returned to England. Then came back to IL in 1903.
Margaret Nichol married Oluf Christian Olsen on 27 Oct 1921 in Scott Co., IA. Oluf was killed in an accident on 21 Mar 1922 in Moline, Rock Island, IL. At the time of Oluf's death Margaret was living with her parents in Farmington, IL.
I'm wondering what happened to Margaret and if and when she ever re-married. I also wonder if she and Oluf had a child. It is very possible that she might have been pregnant when Oluf was killed. Oluf was my great-grandfather's brother.

I am looking for information on my great-great grandfather. I believe that his name is Torvald Olsen (may be Thorvald) He was born in Norway and immigrated to the United States before 1893. His son, my great-grandfather, was Arthur Emmanuel Olsen, he was born in the United States 5 May 1893. He was married to Maren or Marren Norr. I am not sure if they immigrated together, or seperately. Family legend is that they actually returned to and died in Norway. My great-grandfather Arthur, was in Chicago when he married my and eventually in California where he died in 1967. I don't know if he had any brothers or sisters, but I know from his daughter, my grandmother, that he had at least one cousin in Illinois also named Arthur Olsen.

Hi Anne,

Thank you so much for the information regarding the immigration of Torvald Olsen, I will definetley look into it.

After I posted last week, I actually looked again at the 1910 census, and couldn't believe that I had actually repeatedly over looked it. So yes, I did know about my ggrandfather's siblings. I was actually able to find both his sister Signe, and his mother Maren on the 1930 census. Signe had married at the age of 39 to a gentleman by the name of Fred Beck. I have as of yet been unable to locate
his brother.

Thanks again!
Kristen

Dena!

Also, I have the history of the Oxendal family, my great great grandmothers family. She married Peter B Olson.

I am interested in the connection to the Bakki Church in Norway. One of our ancestors was the last person burried under the a Slab at the entrance of the church, Stosle (? spelling) Olsen Oxendal.

Diane
