As the volunteer administrator for the Omland surname message board, I want to introduce myself. I am Kristian Omland, and I live in Vermont, USA. Around 1880, my great grandfather, Ole Stiansen Hallen, moved to a farm called Omland on the outskirts of Risør, Norway and thus he became Ole Stiansen Omland. A painting of that farm (actually two homesteads both called Omland) is attached to this post. My grandfather, Jacob Olsen Omland, kept the Omland surname when he immigrated to the States, and so that got to be our last name.
As I'm sure many of you know, "omland" på norsk essentially translates to "outskirts" in English. So just as my family uses the surname Omland because at one point our ancestors lived on a farm on the outskirts of Risør, there are lots of other Omlands whose ancestors once lived on farms on the outskirts of other communities in Norway.
I look forward to your posts and our mutual discoveries!
