The first territorial governor of New Mexico was Juan de Onate y Salazar (1552-1624) from Zacatecas, Mexico. He came to New Mexico in May, 1598 with 400 men, 130 of which brought their families. He established the first capital at San Gabriel in southern Rio Arriba County. He also travelled/explored from Arizona to Texas and Kansas. He was suspended from office in 1607 and returned home.
