David, I had a grandmother, Ethel Atchison Harris that lived in Nyack and died in 1999. Could that be of the same family?
Very interesting,
Bill (William H. Harris)

David Atchison was born in Ireland around March 3, 1818 and died in Rockland County, NY on June 27, 1876. Does anyone have access to his naturalization papers where I could get more information on him or his wife Margaret who was born in Ireland around 1816 and died in Rockland County on December 11, 1888?

Hi James, I read your post. Did you have any luck finding your birth mother? I too am looking for family. My biological father was Herbert Onderdonk from the Suffern area. I never knew him, I found his name after he died. I'm hoping to find some living relatives. I was born 12/6/1953 my mother's name was Rita McCloud. I was adopted by Fred Swin. I have Onderdonk info for that area, maybe we are connected.

Sharon Fischer

In West Virginia, we have always used the Underdonk instead of Onderdonk. Charles and Sadie Show also have a relative Silas Starry who was my dads cousin. I knew him when I went to Shepherd College. I will go to my records and see what I can find for you. I think I may have what you need. Give me a few days!

We are definately related! Sarah Robinson Underdonk (born 1831) and Jacob Underdonk (born 1834) were my great, great, great Grandparents. They then had a Sarah M who married a Charles Show and that's my line to them. I don't have a lot about them, even their death dates but any info I have I would be happy to share and if you had any on any of the siblings, that would be really great and helpful. My grandparents are actually still alive and just told me they have a very old family bible which I am going to look at sometime this week, and it has some pictures and things in it. I'm excited to go see it! I do have one picture of Sarah M. that I just found this morning.

I don't believe William had any children.

Hi Peter. It was your grandfather's father, also William Holmes Onderdonk, who I was referring to as marrying Matilda Hendrickson. They had a son, William Holmes, who was your grandfather, and also sons, Dudley--who married Helen Scully--Forman Hendrickson, and James Lawrence Onderdonk.

It seems confusing because your father is Dudley and grandfather is William Holmes Onderdonk. Your great-grandfather is also William Holmes Onderdonk. Then your father's uncle, Dudley, had two sons with Helen Scully also named Dudley and William Holmes Onderdonk.

I am way on the other side of the Onderdonk tree at about eighth cousin once removed from you. My great-grandmother, Lura Onderdonk Ferguson Carpenter, was the last Onderdonk our our branch. When her mother died, she moved around between grandparents and aunts on her mother's side. Although she was mentioned as Andrew S. Onderdonk's daughter in his obituary and Civil War Pension application, by the time my grandmother spoke to us about her all she remembered was "Vanderdonk" and Moone which was Lura's mother's family name, although she didn't know that.

Re: ONDERDONK / UNDERDONK

Clarence Ellis married Mrs. Charles Newton Underdonk. I can't read her name on the 1900 census but I have seen it elsewhere as Seina Frances Light and that her parents were George Smith Light and Fannie Virginia Welshans. The Underdonks and Lights are on the same 1900 census page in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

As far as I know at this point Charles Newton Underdonk was the son of Newton C. Onderdonk and Virginia B. Reed. His grandparents were Henry Onderdonk and Julia Bellar on his father's side and James Furlong Reed and Ann Snyder on his mother's side. His great-grandparents on the Onderdonk side were Henry Underdonk and Ann Maddock. I haven't found a connection of this Henry Underdonk to the rest of the Onderdonk family but suspect he may have come from Somerset, New Jersey. I know Jill Underdonk was working on this family and may have had more success since she is more closely related.

I think Charles N. Underdonk and his wife had five children: Bessie Belle, Charles N., Bertie Marie, Daisy Marie, and Virginia Underdonk. Then after Charles Underdonk died, Bertie/Seina--since I'm not sure of her name--and Clarence Ellis had a daughter Evelyn Frances Ellis.

That's the extent of what I know and it could certainly use some confirmation. I'd like to connect these Underdonks to the rest of the Onderdonks and hopefully that can get figured out too. Does anyone know more than this?

Birch Drive Phillips/Knapp Cemetery

I have determined the Onderdonk connection in the Birch Drive Phillips/Knapp Cemetery per the readings I referred to in an earlier message.

1. Knapp, Charlotte, w/o Sylvester Knapp, 3/4/1874, 19 yrs 8 mos

This is Charlotte Onderdonk, sister of Sarah Onderdonk, the wife of John Odell. I believe this is a misreading of the stone as she was born June 26, 1824, and was 49 yrs 8 months old if 3/4/1874 was her death date. She was still living in 1870 census with her son Edwin D. Knapp, his wife, Adelia, and Charlotte and Sylvester's daughter, Laura Knapp, shown below. Another sister, Caroline Onderdonk, was living with Sylvester and Charlotte Knapp in 1860 census.

2.
Leroy Onderdonk, NY/Wisconsin

Anyone out here descended from Wisconsin Onderdonks? I am specifically interested in Leroy Onderdonk who lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1920. He was born August 12, 1877, in New York and died January 1966 and was apparently living in Baileys Harbor, Door County, Wisconsin, at that time. In 1920 he was married to an Emily S. age 35 and had a son, Jack D. Onderdonk who was just over 3 years old. Leroy's occupation at the time was salesman.

I'm trying to determine if Leroy is the son of Dr. David Wellington Onderdonk and Clara Haden or Hayden of Rochester, New York, and originally from Orleans County, New York. They had a son, Leroy, who was born in August 1877 according to the 1900 Federal Census and was a tobacco salesman at that time. He was no longer in New York by 1920 and the Wisconsin Leroy also has the middle initial W.

This shouldn't be too hard to figure out, but I'm interested in any surviving descendants. Leroy would have been my great-grandmother, Lura Jane Onderdonk's first cousin but she was raised by her mother's family after her mother, Mrs. Andrew S. Onderdonk (Fannie Estelle Moone), died in 1866.
Maria had died in 1867.

1870 Federal Census, Shelby, Orleand County, New York, Page 45
23 July 1870

Hade Clarissa 16 F W Servant New York

Hi Doug,

The scan I have of the Bible pages is from Gilbert Onderdonk's family which I received from one of his descendants in Texas. Much if not all is in Dutch if I remember correctly and you are welcome to a copy and translation if you are interested.

I am a descendant of Andries and Jacobus' brother, John Onderdonk, who took his family to Albany County, and then Peter Onderdonk (who was Gilbert Onderdonk's grandfather), Abram Onderdonk, Andrew S. Onderdonk, and then Lura Jane Onderdonk, who was my great-grandmother. Gilbert was the son of Abram's brother, John Onderdonk.

I have the Onderdonk book too. If you look up Lura and Andrew S. Onderdonk in the book, you will see her listed as the daughter of Eva Merriman, but she is actually the daughter of Fannie Estelle Moone. Her daughter, Merna Ferguson, who is also listed in the book, was my grandmother.

Lura's mother died in 1866 and she was taken in by her maternal grandparents and aunts, so we knew little about the Onderdonks until about the past five years. My grandmother always thought they were Van Der Donks and had them confused with her mother's aunts who were part of the Moone family.

I would also be happy to exchange anything you are interested in.

Eric

eric, i am doug, mentioned by vickie in her e-mail, saw your repley , i am taking my info from "onderdonk family in america" pub in 1900, which i have. Also have bible pages which mention jacobus(james). my mother put these pages in plastic many years ago, they appear to be a hand written copy of about 7 pages. it states the original is owned by a Gilbert Onderdonk of nursery, texas and supplied to Chauncey Buchannan of tarrytown. In the book each generation is numbered and each listing is. so jacobus islisted as #27 son ofAndries # 4 of the 3rd generation. So we are related as i am decendedfrom jacobus brother andries # 25 born apr 17,1747. I live in Fla but if can find anything for you in the book, let me know Doug

Her mother was Rachel Palmer. Her grandparents were Andries Onderdonk and Willemyntie Van Houten.

I agree with Douglass on the identity of your Sally Onderdonk. I don't know where I found it--for some reason it isn't documented--but I have her "buried Family Plot recorded by Maude and Gertrude Conklin. Partial listing. On a bend on Birch Drive just off of Calls Hollow Road, Stony Point, NY. Behind Private house." I have her, Sarah Onderdonk, born 14 January 1782 and died 4 October 1847 and married to Jonathan Odell. She is a first cousin 6 times removed.

Vickie, sorry to take so long, on vacation, holidays, sm operation, seem like no time anymore. well might have found your sally. going thru the onderdonk book i noticed many sarahs were also called sally. have two for you. James Onderdonk 1752-1806 had a daughter Sarah b/ 14 jan 1782 who married a johnathan odell 11 sept 1805 at kakiat and had two children, Rachel and charles(no dates) but were born in haverstraw, n.y.. This sounds like the correct one.. the other shows up on ancestry.com. I looked john and found a john jacob odell b/ 1806 in haverstraw, who died there in 1850, he married a sarah sally ann rose_________ no maiden. thats the only other one i could find. i think the first one is your sally. you might also check on Dutch Door Genealogy.com a web site for rockland county. hope i could help, she sounds like a distant cousin of mind Thanks///Doug

Hello, I am working on a desecrated cemetery with the help family members of the Phillips/Knapp who are rebuilding it. There is a Sally Onderdonk buried in the cemetery. She was the wife of John Odell. Sally died on Oct 3, 1847. Aged 66.8.20. So she must have been born in or around 1781. Any help to know her more would be greatly apprciated.

Vicki

Dudley Onderdonk

He married Helen Scully, daughter of Henry Dennis and Mary Monro Scully of Pittsburgh. Dudley is mentioned in Henry's 1919 obit. I am researching the Scully family of Pittsburgh, of which my late mother was one. Net searches indicate a Dudley Onderdonk currently lives in Illinois; and I suspect he is a descendent. I have questions; information to exchange.
