ONG in Cambridgeshire, England

Hello everyone.

I've known for a while now that i had the ONG family in my ancestry but it's only really tonight that I've tried to go back further.

The most recent ONG in my tree was Mary ONG. She married Philip CROSS in Ely, Cambridgeshire in 1790.

Mary was the 7th child of Thomas ONG (of Ely), and she was the 4th child of his second wife, Martha (née FEAST). Thomas' first wife had also been called Martha and she died in 1764. There had been an earlier Mary child but she died as an infant in 1769.

It looks like Mary ONG and her younger sister Martha were likely to be the only survivors of the ONG family in Ely.

If anyone can shed some light onto this name and it's location in a pre-1858 date.. then i'd love to hear from you.

There's a bit more ONG on my website - www.familytreeuk.co.uk/ong

thanks
Andrew
www.familytreeuk.co.uk
I do believe that Rebecca Ong of this line married Reason Jones, an ancestor of Mary Vanetta Jones, who married Adam Kerr, and produced my grandfather, Roy Melvin Kerr. Mary Vanetta Jones was a Quaker, and her mother still spoke the King James English.

Hello,

I've loaded my ancestor tree which includes all the Ong children on www.genesreunited.co.uk . I suggest you register on the site and look for George Ong born 1824. I can then give you access to my tree where you can see all the Ong family I have found.

Hi Ray, I am also researching the Ong family in the UK. My grandmother was an Eliza Ong (circa 1890's) and she was one of 15 children, her father was a George Willim Ong but I don't know the name of the mother (it may also have been Eliza). The only siblings I know for sure are her sisters Cissie and Nellie (who was an opera singer), and one of the brothers named Jack who went to live in Derbyshire when he got older. Two of the sons died in the 1st World War and I have an old photo of one of their graves in France as well as a photo of one of the sons on Minden Day. It looks as though Edward was one of the brothers as well. What are the names of the 8 other children you know about and do you have any idea where George William Ong originated

Margaret M.(Smock)Ong was divorced from Benjamin Ong in Wilson Co. KS and later died in Amarillo, Texas. I have seen the date of her death as 16 Feb 1917. At Find-a-grave is a Margaret Ong, no birth date given, in the Llano Cemetery in Amarillo,TX with a death date of 1915. There are no dates on the stone in the picture. Can anyone tell me if the two Margaret Ongs are the same person. Thanks!

Theltenham ONGS and Quakers

I am a direct descendent of Ada Minnie ONG, who married William STONE in 1909. Ada was the daughter of Walter ONG and Minnie Ada POULTON. This branch of my family has its origins in Thelnetham, Suffolk where Thomas ONG married Sarah NICE in 1754.

The Ongs who emigrated to America seemed to be Quakers - unless I'm mistaken. Does anyone know if my ancestors in Theltenham and thereabouts were Quakers too?

Many thanks

Apologies for my tardy reply. Is your grandmother the Margaret who married James Jackson in 1921? She and her brother Albert were two of the children of Alfred William Ong and his wife Margaret (nee MOYLAN). Alfred died in 1956. His parents were James and Ellen Ong.
I havn't been in touch with Jim Whittle and Neil Cullen recently but they are also related to other children of James and Ellen. If you email me I'm sure I will be able to give you more information. Best wishes. Les
Judith,

I just came across your Dec. 2000 message regarding the identity of Oliver Ong's parents. I am sure that by now you have discovered that they were Dr. Nathan and Mary Hammond Ong, my gr-gr-great-grandparents. I am descended from their oldest son, Reason (Rezin).

I am wondering if by chance you have come across any information on Mary or her parents, George and Deborah Hammond. As Nathan Ong died so young in 1828, I have always wondered what became of Mary and the seven children, including my Reason and your Oliver. Possibly she remarried, or she and the children moved in with a relative, or some of the children may have been sent to live at other Ong or Hammond households. I haven't been able to find any answers. If you have come across any information, I surely would appreciate it if you could help.

Hello Janette

I’m not sure how much you are already aware of your mother’s ONG roots but she is part of the same family as Jim Whittle and Neil Cullen (see replies above) who I have been corresponding with. The family of James and Ellen ONG (nee ORTON) lived in Fulham in London at the end of the 19th Century. One of their children Ernest married Alice Agnes BELL in 1910 in Lancashire. Their son George, born in 1914, married Ruth BUCKBY in 1935 and my records show that the births of two children with a mother’s name of BUCKBY were registered, Ruth (1939) and Gillian (1948). Is your mother Gillian by any chance?

Please feel free to email me. I’ll be able to provide you with much detail of this branch of the ONG family.

Regards,
Les
Hello Les

My mother (and I) have always been curious about the origins of her birth-surname - which is Ong. Her step-surname (Buckby) is also rather unusual, as is my maiden surname - Watson-Barron.

I am very keen to try and either unravel (or knit!) my lineages and have started from my maternal side - hence this correspondence.

I look forward to any serious correspondence/information with regard to the surnames Ong, Buckby, Stevens and Watson-Barron - primarily in the UK.

With Kind Regards
Janette Watson-Barron

James married Ellen Horton, Ernest married Alice Agnes Bell. Their daugter Constance was my mother. Constance died in 1985 in Brisbane Australia. I would by most greatfull for any more information on the James & Ellen side.

Paternal grandfathers

My father was James Mifflin Ong III. I found his father and grandfather in the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census. James Mifflin II is listed as age 7 and age 16 in the census which would make him born around 1864, but the only record found has him born in Covington, Kentucky. The majority of Ong's I think my link is are in Ohio or Indiana at this time. The James Mifflin Ong born to Jacob Ong and Mary McGrew died as a teenager (14) so he can't be my great-great-grandfather. The James and Mifflins have to be cousins, uncles. Can someone help me with this history mystery? I have a current four generation family group sheet that I would be happy to share.

Re: Ong Surname

I’ve searched my records and found that Ernest Herbert Ong’s birth was registered in the first quarter of 1883 in the Fulham (London) registration district. I think this means that he was either the son of James & Ellen Ong or William & Ann Ong who both had families in Hammersmith at that time. Obtaining the birth certificate will resolve that. I have the registration reference if you wish to get a copy of it. I can link both of these families back into Suffolk where Ongs originally came from.

It looks to me as if Ernest’s wife was named Alice. Are you certain it was Agnes? He married her in 1910. Ernest died in 1958 and Alice in 1967. Their daughter Constance was born in 1911 and their son George in 1914.
Re: Ong Surname

I have been doing some digging and have come up with the following:-

James ONG was christened on 5 Jun 1825 at Wissington (also known as Wiston) in Suffolk. He was the youngest son of George and Mary Ann ONG (née OSBORN). In 1841 the census records show that he was living with his brother William’s family at Little Horkesley in Essex. I havn’t yet been able to find him yet in but I suspect that he was serving in the army at the time because it’s on record that a James ONG received the Indian Mutiny medal sometime between 1857 and 1859 while serving as a private with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps.

The 1871 census reveals James to be a discharged soldier living in Hammersmith, London with his wife Ellen (née ORLON) and children Ellen Louisa, Mary Jane and James Henry. His wife Ellen was born in India. In 1881 James and Ellen were still living in Hammersmith but this time with 7 children - Louisa, Mary Jane, James Henry, Thomas, Julia, Alfred W and Frances. James died in 1893 and Ellen in 1912. Ellen probably died penniless because she was a pauper resident of the Fulham workhouse at the time of the 1901 census.

If my interpretation of the parish records is correct then the lineage of James can be traced back to the early 17th Century:-

James’ father George was the youngest of the 9 children of William and Elizabeth ONG (née PARSONS), all christened at Assington in Suffolk.
William was christened in 1752 at Alpheton in Suffolk, the son of George and Mary ONG (née ELY).
George was christened in 1714 at Alpheton, the son of Thomas & Elizabeth ONG (née AVIS).
Thomas was christened in 1678 at nearby Shimpling, the son of John & Elizabeth ONGE (née ?).
John was christened in 1635 at Shimpling, the son of George & Margaret ONG (née GREEN).

By the way, it looks feasible that some descendants of the other children of James & Ellen may still be living but some more digging would need to be done to determine this.
The gremlins crept into my last update. What I meant to say in the 2nd paragraph was “I havn’t yet been able to find him in 1851 but I suspect that he was serving in the army at the time because …………”.

Also, I realise now that, according to the birth certificate of Ernest Herbert’ s brother Alfred William ONG, the maiden name of their mother was Ellen ORTON (not ORLON). This ties in with name HORTON that you obtained from Ernest Herbert’s birth certificate. So ORTON or HORTON? Take your pick.

I will email you with the details of everything I know about the family. Then we can perhaps unravel it.
Heather,

I can indeed help. George ONG was the older brother of James who is referred to above. Despite the census entry for 1881 stating that he was born in Colchester aged 54, he was actually christened not too far away in Wissington in Suffok on 1 Feb 1824. As you probably are aware, while he was a soldier, he married Eliza PEARSON in Preston on 14 Nov 1859. George and Eliza started the Lancashire branch of the ONG family that thrives there today. They had 15 children even though George was 36 when the first of them was born in 1860. The last was born in 1889. The family suffered terribly during the 1st World War when no less than 5 of the Lancashire ONGs were killed in action or died of wounds.

I have a fair amount of documentation on your Ong family that I will send to you by email. Also, I’m in touch with one of your mother’s cousins who also has been researching his family history. So you will be able to make contact with him as well. I’ll send you his email address.

With regard to the origin of the ONG surname, if you take a look at my Rootsweb message board reply to Susan James on 11 Jan 2003 you will see what my thoughts are. As you say the idea that it’s French does seem unlikely.

Best wishes, Les
Mike,
I have some ONG in my family tree and would like to confirm the relationships, links and dates. I'm hoping you can help.

Susan A. Ong married David R. Graves in LaSalle County, IL
Sept 20, 1860. I have a copy of their marriage license.
I think Susan was born June 28, 1833, in Ohio maybe, and died July 11, 1906 in West Plains, Howell Co. MO.

Susan's parents were maybe John McGrew Ong b. Dec 27, 1799 d. June 27, 1888 and Mary Cuppy b. abt 1797 d. June 27, 1888.

Susan's siblings were possibly Alfred, Abram, Mary, Jacob W., Nathan A., Mifflin, John L., Ann, and Isaac.

I have a copy of David Graves's Civil War pension papers and these papers include petitions from John L. Ong (age 56 in Mar 1890) and Jacob W. Ong (age 64 in Jul 1890) on behalf of David Graves. These papers give the date and place of death for Susan mentioned above; the series of communities that Susan and David lived; and the names and dates of birth of their 4 children.

Does any of this fit with your information? Thanks.
Wendy

Janice,
I just received a copy of the Civil War pension records for David R. Graves. David Graves and Susan A. Ong were married Sept 20 1860 in Ottawa, LaSalle County IL. The pension records reveal that Susan died July 11, 1906 at West Plains, Howell Co. Mo. The record also reveals that they had 4 children: daughter (first name unreadable, middle initial E) born July 2, 1861; son Dick W. born Sept 20, 1866; son Ned or Ed H. born July 19, 1870; and daughter May A. born Nov 11, 1875.
The pension record contains petitions submitted by both Jacob W. Ong and John L. Ong on behalf of David Graves to support his effort to increase his monthly pension amount. The pension records shows that David Graves died Dec 6, 1918.
In addition I received information from Greenlawn Cemetery in Springfield MO showing that David Graves was buried there Dec 23, 1918 and May Graves was buried there May 5, 1931.
Wendy
Hi - I have recently found out that an estranged branch of my family are Ongs. I have very little information, and would really appreciate any help, if available. My paternal grandmother's name was Ada Minnie ONG, who married William STONE (? when). They lived at 277 Pinner Rd in Harrow, near London (UK) when their son - my grandfather - Alfred Stanley STONE was born on 12/8/1917.

Is it the case that British Ongs are of French origin, or Chinese? Also, how can I get hold of the 'Ong Book' - and would it be relevant to European/British Ongs?

Dear Les,

My mother Theresa was an Ong, b. 1928 in Salford and I have just begun to trace the family tree. I have traced her fathers family back to George Ong, born 1827 in Colchester. He married Eliza Pearson in Preston in 1849, I assume he was in the Army and transferred to Preston.
Do you know anything about the line of the family. I figured that all the Ongs in this country must be related back to those in Norfolk/Suffolk.

I had also been told that the name was of French origin but that looks unlikely.

Any information you could send me would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards, Heather Hunt

Hi, Cindy,

I have looked through the Ong book but am not able to find reference to the three Ongs whom you mentioned. Perhaps they are among the Ongs that Albert Ong tried to contact but failed. I believe that Albert started his research around 1880. Anyway, I am sorry that I can't help you. Good luck. There were indeed many Jacobs, as well as many Ongs in Jefferson County, Ohio.

You might try getting additional information from Civil War records, as pension papers tend to deal with wives rather than parents.
