My grandfather Alfred Stanley Onion was a merchant seaman from Oxford England and disappeared in Brisbane in 1945 whilst his ship was being repaired after crashing with a tug in the bay. He left 2 young children and a wife in England and when his best friend on the boat tried to track him down it seemed that he was covering his tracks. The same when his brother went out to look for him shortly after that. There are a couple of family stories that suggest he was in contact with his father in Oxford and that he phoned to speak to his friend many years later. He probably moved away from Brisbane, changed his name (might have used the middle name as a surname?), started a new family and has since died as he was born in 1920 - but there may be family in Australia. A bit of a family mystery and this post is a very long shot that someone might recognise something familiar about this, but I'm not expecting too much after all these years! I'd be interested to know if you think there is a connection.
