TIPTON, Iowa -- Bernice Ruth Onken, 101, of 1200 Mulberry St., Tipton, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Cedar Manor Nursing Home, Tipton.
Services are at United Church of Christ, Tipton. The Rev. David Lorenzen will officiate. Musical selections will be provided by organist, Nancy Hipple. Pallbearers are members of the United Church of Christ. Burial will be at Tipton Masonic Cemetery, Tipton.
Visitation at the Fry Funeral Home, Tipton.
Mrs. Onken was born on Nov. 3, 1901, in Tipton, the daughter of Jacob and Minnie Willer Pfarr. She married Herman Onken in 1939 in Tipton. He preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 1991.
She graduated from Tipton High School and earned a master's degree in math from the University of Iowa.
She was a math teacher at Norfolk Nebraska Community College and then worked in the Auditor's Office, Tipton.
She was a member of First United Church of Christ, Tipton.
She served 40 years as treasurer of United Church of Christ and was a member of American Association of University Women.
Survivors include a son, Carl Onken and his wife, Mary, of Central Valley, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Alexandra Fallot and her husband, Dr. Andre, of San Antonio, Texas, Christopher Onken and his wife, Jennifer, of Thabatfeka, Lefotho and Natafha Onken of Boston, Mass.; a great-grandchild, Alexandre Fallot; and a sister, Mildred Gates of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three sisters, Bertha Mauer, Lucy Walton and Florence Thompson.
