Classification: Query
Surnames: ONSTOTT, STEVENSON, JANES, EVERHEART, LYONS, REEDY, HICKS, HAMPTON, CURTIS
I am working on a large STEVENSON family tree. Here is an ONSTOTT family that one of my STEVENSONs married into.

Louisa M. STEVENSON (1836-1870) was born at Hot Springs, Arkansas, the eldest of ten children of James Hall STEVENSON (1803-1886) and Emily Clement JANES (1817-1899). Both James and Emily are buried near Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas.

Louisa married William ONSTOTT on 04 Sep 1851 at Lamar County, Texas. William and Louisa are buried next to each other at the Onstott Cemetery, near Wolfe City, Hunt County, Texas. In 1860 the family was living at Precinct #7, Page 330B, Hunt County, Texas. William was listed as a wagon maker and thirty-five years old, born in Tennessee. Two children, James M., age six, and Mary E., age five are listed. Living next door to them was William's brother Henderson ONSTOTT. In 1870 the family was listed as living at Timber Creek District, Page 432, Hunt County, again next door to Henderson ONSTOTT. Listed in the family was William OMSTOTT age 50, Louisa age 47 and three children: James, age 17, Emily, age 15, and a third child (female) whose name is very hard to read (Parlia?), age 10. It is not known why their daughter Sarah or son Joseph were not listed. In a 1865 listing of indigent dependents of Confederate Civil War veterans in Coryell County, three indigent children are listed for a William ONSTOTT. Louisa may have taken her children to live with her parents while William was fighting for the Confederacy in the Civil War.

In the 1880 Hunt County Census William ONSTOTT is listed as 55 years old and his second wife Sarah E. is age 28. Children included Sarah E. (age 18) and Joseph H. (age 13). No mention is made of Parlia. Since only three children were included on the 1865 indigent children's survey and Parlia is not listed on the 1880 census, she may have died young. But why wasn't Joseph and Sarah listed on the 1870 census? They may have been staying with grandparents. Three children by William's second marriage are listed also along with a step-son William C. EVERHEART, age 10. William's will was filed in 1881, so that was probably the year that he died. An Eugenia ONSTOTT (06 Sep 1846 - 14 Jul 1914) is buried at South Sulfur Cemetery, near ________, Hunt County, Texas. Was she the daughter of William by an earlier marriage??

Also buried at the Onstott Cemetery are Mary ONSTOT (d. 22 Jan 1879, age 73 years, 8 days) (she is William's mother); Miss Bettie (Elizabeth) ONSTOT (15 Jan 1826 to 16 Feb 1905) (William's sister), and Amanda and J.O. ONSTOT with no dates. In addition five stones are broken and unreadable. On son James gravestone the surname is spelled ONSTOTT, and I will spell it this way. After Louisa died William married a second time to:

d. at

Children:
Lillian W________ ONSTOT b. 1874 d.

In 1900 Sarah EVERHEART ONSTOTT was living with her son William C. EVERHEART in Johnson Co., Texas. I know nothing of the three ONSTOTT children of William and Sarah.

William (1774-1856) is buried at the Hilger Cemetery, east of Bonham, Fannin County, Texas. His wife Elizabeth was buried at the Onstott and Stewart Cemetery.

The two eldest children, William and Elizabeth, were born in Tennessee. The next two children, John and Henderson, were born in Illinois while the last three children were born in Texas. It is known that William ONSTOTT (1774-1856) came to Fannin County, Texas in 1834 and received a large land grant. Evidentially his son John came to Texas at the same time. John and Mary were living in Lamar County, Texas in 1850. I have additional information on the sons John, Henderson, and Jefferson if anyone is interested.

William ONSTOTT was born in Tennessee in 1824 at died on 17 Jun 1881 at probably Hunt County, Texas. William and Louisa STEVENSON ONSTOTT were the parents of five known children:

i. James McDonald (or Monroe?) ONSTOTT (1853-1917) married 1) Mary M. LYONS in 1877 at Hunt County, Texas and then Mary Elizabeth REEDY (1861-1934) in 1883 at Hunt County. John was the father of two sons and two daughters. James and Mary are buried at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery, near Wolfe City, Hunt County, Texas.

ii. Mary Emily ONSTOTT (1855-???) married Samuel HICKS in 1875 at Hunt County, Texas. Nothing is known of them.

iii. A. Parlia ONSTOTT (1860-???), nothing known of her after 1870.

iv. Sarah E. ONSTOTT (1862-???) married J.W. HAMPTON in 1883 at Hunt County, Texas.

v. Joseph H. ONSTOTT (1865-???) married Videlia CURTIS (b. Aug 1865 in Louisiana). Parents of six known children (Verna, Abner, William Myrce, Velma, Bessie and John William). LIved at Limestone County, Texas in 1900. Almost all the children ended up in California.

If anyone has any information to trade on this family please contact me. Dan_Stevenson@sparta.com
