nancy, I'm still having trouble getting e mails to you! My Grandfather was Howard C. Opdyke, second son of Joseph and Lucinda. His older brother was Frank (I believe his middle initial was "B", I'm @ work right now, so I have to rely on my memory :)), and his sisters were Edna and Florence. The last hotel Joseph owned (and where he died in 1905) is STILL standing and located in Mount Pleasant, New Jersey. Thats the hotel I have a picture of with Joseph, Lucinda, Frank,Edna, and Florence in the foreground. It was called the American Hotel at the time, and I've been there w/ my Mom. It looks remarkably the same, hacked up into apts though :( . Frank and his wife Estelle lived Frenchtown, and although they died when I was really little (I don't remember them), my Grandmother Margaret Rockafellow Opdyke, showed me their little red house which sat under the railroad tracks many times. I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same Frank Opdyke. Let me know, Tracy

Hi! I'm just wondering who you are! My Great Grandparents were Joseph and Lucinda, 4th cousins who were married. Actually my Great Grandfather was Joseph Opdycke and changed the spelling of his name to Lucinda's. They owned several hotels in and around Frenchtown, the last was the American Hotel in Mount Pleasant. My Grandparents were Howard and Margaret Opdyke from Milford, N.J. Frank Opdyke was my Grandfather's brother. My Dad was Carmen and Jack is my cousin. I'm trying to figure out what cemetery you're talking about. There's quite a number of Opdykes in the Frenchtown, Milford, and Mount Pleasant cemeteries. Would be interesting to chat with you.

TA - Hi Brenda, I had purchased years ago a set of 4 hand-written diaries penned by a Miss Mary B. Opdyke, while she lived in Ivyland (Warminster) Bucks County Pennsylvania. Mary was born in Bucks County on April 29, 1838, she was the daughter of William and Charlotte (Bennette) Opdyke. Her parents were married November 12, 1836. She never married and lived with her parents for their entire life.

She would then take care of her sister Anna Elizabeth Opdyke Finneys 2 children after she died in 1875. Mary would live well into her 90's.

The diaries are 1911, 1913, 1921, 1922. With lots of mentions of local people and events. These will eventually be donated to the Bucks County Historical Society.

I was not sure if there was interest in the information in these. You can email me at TAdamsky@verizon.net.

Henry Opdyke in Bellbrook, OHIO

We have 2 Homes built and occupied by Henry Opdyke married to Catherine Cummins. Both homes are threatened by DEVELOPERS, although, so far - so good, no demolition as of 10-10-05. I am looking for an interested family member to give us any more information than what I have found and previous people have found connected to Bellbrook and Centerville Historical Societies, here in OHIO. Henry was a Miller, Co-founded our town in 1816, and died when a maddock fell on his head while helping his neighbor dig their well in January, 1825. I have had very good response from one source "LOIS V." whom gave me enough for the council meeting to make a statement of Henry and Catherine's roots; a living family member will be nice to meet. Henry and Catherine are not such a mystery to us although why they decided to come to the Northwest Territory and leave Hunterdon County in Bethlehem, New Jersey behind, would be an interesting subject. Please contact us at BellbrookHistory@woh.rr.com
Bellbrook and Sugarcreek Historical Society
12 South West St.
Bellbrook, OHIO 45305
Thankyou !

Lois, I can't believe you have the same geneology book I have. It was written by Charles Wilson Opdyke in 1889. My Grandfather was Robert Browning Updike from Nebraska. Please contact me if you are interested in following up on this.

Opdyke: Nellie, Maria, Charles, Charity, Nathan, Eleanor- Seneca Co, NY

Researching the Updyke/Updike/Opdyke line from Seneca County, New York:

Charity (Updike) Pearl (181-1916) married John Pearl (1825-1858) in Seneca County, New York and had 3 girls: Elenora, Fanny and Cora Pearl. Two daughters married into the Pontius family while Fanny/Fannie married Abner Stahl.

Charity 68, is listed with siblings Maria 65 and Charles H. 66 in the 1900 Seneca County, Fayette census; Another Charles H. Updyke, age 38, is listed living next door with his family.

In the 1880 census she was with mother Nellie Updike 73 and sister Elearta (?) 44;

and in 1860, Charity was living with Eleanora Opdyke age 52 (unk relation), Maria Opdyke 25, Nathan N. Opdyke 23, and Charity 29 is there with her 3 daughters.

I'm trying to find additional relatives & determine the relationship between Charity Updyke and Eleanora - who is the age to reasonably be a mother or aunt...and if this is her mother, then who is Nellie? I have no real proof of her parents other than the census info above, though I'm still looking.

Would love to share info & photos with anyone researching this line. Mwoz_gen@msn.com

I am trying to help a lady with her DAR papers on Capt. Albert Opdyke (Opdylke). We are missing info on the wives of Peter (1777-1844) and his son David (1810-c1880). Does anyone have access to the Opdyke Gen. that I've seen mentioned numerous places? Would sure like to get copies of some pages if not a copy of the book itself! Thanks for any help!
Hattie,

In looking through some of my early notes, I found that you were looking for the mother of Susan Aurelia Updike (Opdyke). In my history I found out that Susan's mother was Mary Goetz Updike. I assume she was also the mother of
Mary Elizabeth and Elinor. The name for Susan's husband was Leander Bartlett. I am certain of this since he was my father's grandfather and Susan was his grandmother. I hope that you can use this information and I am not too late.
If you want any other information on Susan or Leander, I would send it to you. Helen

Thank you for your reply. I have met your cousin at the lumber company in 2002. We did find the cemetery and were able to visit it, although it is on private property. The owner was very nice, because we were not "pushy" about visiting the site and his son drove us out into the back field and we got to visit the cemetery. There are apparently many people who come there and "demand" to see the cemetery, which he doesn't have to do. Because I have a direct relationship with the people buried there (grandparents) the owner was very nice and even came home from work to talk with us. It pays to be nice and not demanding.

My 3 great grandfather, Daniel Carrell who married Elizabeth Arnwine is buried there and we plan to make a trip to NJ this spring.
Helen ,Thanks
I do need more on this family. I have several cemetery records a volunteer uncovered for me. but I can not verify any birth information. I found this record that conflicts with a previous source about the Opdyke/ Updyke Family that gave her Mary's last name as Lasher

The Descendents of Robert Burdick of Rhode Island by Nellie Johnson Syracuse 1937 states that The Reverand George Brown Lisbee and his wife Elizabeth had George Dudly and Mary Elizabeth
Mary Elizabeth married William UPDYKE and had three daughters, Susan Amelia who married Leander Bartlett and lived in Albany, New York, MARY ELIZABETH UPDYKE who married in NEw York City to AMBROSE PEACOCK and Elinore who married Elmer Wands and died in New York City.

I know Mary Elizabeth daughter of William and MAry Opdylke/ Updyke married Ambrose as I have Information on his family. I have no idea about the family of Ambrose Peacock prior to his appearing as a child living with family with adifferent last name on the 1850 census.

We may have previously talked. One source I had for my Infor is a Helen C. Is that you? Will be glad to share what I have turned up on Ambrose.

Hello Pat! Thank you for your response. Yes, it does sound like we are related. I've got some information on the Opdyke family also and I am thinking they might be from the same person as both are hand-written. The one I have is written by Velva Heryford of Redding, who was Minnie Opdyke Cramer Prickett's grandaughter. She and my father were more or less raised by Minnie, and so she has a lot of small stories. If you'll send me your address, I'd be glad to make a copy and send it to you......How about pictures and things like that? I'd love to send you what I have if they aren't the same.......

My address is: 5686 Victoria Lane
Livermore, CA 94550

Thanks!

Hello! I am a great-great grandaughter of 'Jack' Opdyke and I come from what they call his "First Family," meaning descended from his first wife called Julie Ann (for some reason.) If you have information from the 'Second Marriage", I'd love to read it. I had heard that he was wounded in the Civil War (in the leg from a cannonball) at Chatanooga, TN. He received a pension for his wound. He did come from Ohio but his family made the old 'wagon train' trek when my great-grandmother Minnie was about 2 years old. If this meshes with what you've got, let me know and I'll try to locate information on the Opdyke clan. Thanks, Chris

Elana:
David Opdyke was my gg-grandfather. His first wife was Rebecca Ann Dungan of Willowdale, NE.

He was the son of Peter Opdyke (son of Albert) and Hanna Luce who married in 1799 in NJ. They had 8 children; David was the eldest born in 1810. He was followed by 2 other sons and five daughters. Peter Opdyke died in 1844 in German Twsp, Mercer County, OH.

David married Rebecca Ann Dungan and had six children: Andrew Jackson (1836, Allen Co. Indiana), Levi (1837),Hannah J (1838), Arminda (1840), Rebecca (1841) and Ev Anna (1842). I believe all the daughters were born in Willowdale NE.

From what I can tell, Rebecca Ann Dungan was the daughter of Isiah Dungan and Eleanor Jones of Beaver County, PA.

Hope this helps.
Hi Deborah:
David Eugene Opdyke would have been my gr-uncle, the eldest son of Andrew Jackson Opdyke & Mahala Ann (Julia) Tyrrell. He was named after his paternal grandfather; his paternal grandmother was Rebecca Ann Dungan. David was born Nov. 11, 1859 in Mason County, Illinois and died Sept. 6, 1918 at McCloud, Siskiyou County, California.

According to a hand-written family history (by one of Andrew Jackson's granddaughters)David & Aurelia had a dairy farm near Dana at the head of Fall River; it was known as the thousand springs farm. David and Aurillia did not have children of their own and adopted Johnnie McCandless. His brother, Paul McCandless, was cared for at the thome of David's sister Lodema and her husband Thomas Ray. They did not formally adopt Paul.

If you would like more information about the Opdyke family of Shasta County, please be in touch with me at pattop@comcast.net.

Regards,
PATT

Regards,
PATT

Christina:
I just checked the Opdyke message board and discovered your response. Sounds like we are related. My grandfather -- who would have been the brother of your gr-grandmother -- was William Thomas who was 4 years old when the family set out for California.

I have a lot of information about the Opdykes and a copy of a hand-written family history in two parts: one covering the first family and another covering the 2nd family.

Patt

GEORGE W. OPDYKE m. JENNIE KIMBALL - who's George W. was he?

Iowa Marriages, 1851-1900, shows GEORGE W. OPDYKE m. JENNIE KIMBALL in Muscatine County, Iowa, 13 JUL 1875.
Jennie was the widow of Leonard Kimball, and had children. from that previous marriage. Jennie (nee Gressley) Opdyke had one child by George W. Opdyke in 1876, born in Illinois. And by 1880, George has disappeared from the family, and although Jennie is not listed as a Widow in the census, she apparently married a third time later that year (to William H Porter) in Aurora, Hamilton, Nebraska.

I can't seem to find a GEORGE W. OPDYKE in the Op Dyke genealogy, or anywhere else, born about 1840 ± 20 years, (Jennie was born 1841) who isn't already 'taken'. Anyone have a George who links up?

Hi, this is a reply to a message that is rather old, but I am noew to this list and in case it helps anyone I will post: I'll bet if you contacted my husbands cousin Jack Opdyke at the Opdyke lumber company near Frenchtown he could easily tell you where this cemetery is.

PS: any Hunterdon Co Opdykes still active on this list?

Hi, that is wonderful, I'm glad you were able to get there. How were you grandparents related to the Opdykes? My husbands father is a grandson of Frank B. Opdyke, who was actually the son of 2 Opdyke cousins, Joseph Opdyke b. 1841 and Lucinda H. Opdycke b. 1856, they were both descended from Albert Opdyck b. 1685 so through both sides that family descends from Louris Jansen Op Dyck.

Does anyone know if Johannes Opdyck had a daughter named Agnes who married William Critchfield? I can't find her name in the Opdyck book.

Thanks,
Kristy
