Earl William Opper

Does anyone have information about the family of Earl William Opper? He was born in Kitchener(called Berlin at that time) Ontario between 1900 and 1910. At some point his parents died and he spent most of his childhood in an orphanage. He was my grandfather and I'd like to know a little more about his family. Were his parents first-generation Canadians? If so, what part of Germany did they come from?

I wish I did but as my research stands right now I do not. Have you checked on familysearch.org? I've found that a lot of the names in my line where found by adding Johann as the first name, such as Johann Ludwig Opper. The practice of using only 2 names seems to have appeared around the early - mid 1900's but the Germans often used 3 names prior to that. Also, names are usually carried down through the years from Father to son, at least that's what I've found in my research. If you search for Johann Opper on FamilySearch website you might find some from earlier times that you can drill down on to find the name you seek. Good luck.

I'm Charles' first cousin once-removed.

The information regarding the lineage of our branch of the family before my grandfather is from memoirs that he wrote in 1950.

My father was John Herbert Opper son of Frederick Herman Opper. Frederick arrived in the States from Oberkaufungen (near Kassel) in 1891. His father Carl Gottfried Opper died at the age of 44 in Germany. His mother Anna Auguste Katharina Rueppell died in 1914 at the age of 73 also in Germany. Carl was the son of Johann Kaspar Friedrich Opper (1785 - 1853) and Dorothea Elisabethe Keuthan (1811 - 1887). Dorothea was also christened "Friedericke" and was called "Rickey" for short by her contemporaries. Johann Opper served as an aide to Napoleon in the Russian Campaign and was one of the few survivors of the retreat from Moscow.

The geneology beyond this point is unknown to me. Any distant relatives out there?

Hi Sharon,
could it be that your Austin Carl Opper is related to my relative Adolph Opper? He was born on 16 Oct. 1850 in Daubringen/Hesse as Georg Adolf Opper and arrived in New York on 10 Sept. 1881 together with his wife Katharina and their infant daughter by the same name. He was registered in the USA as Adolph Opper and appears on the 1900 census lists of New York as "Adolph Opper, laborer".
Sincerely,
Karl Heinz Opper

Dear Karl Heinz,
thank you for your answer. It is very
interesting. The families are different
clans. But I am surprised that the
christian names of the names mentioned on
this page are very similar to the names
my grand grand father and others had.
Names like Charles George I and II.
So maybe there is somewhere a link centuries
ago. I will try to find out more.
Best regards
Chris

He had 9 children. Barbara is my husbands g grandmother, Lizzie Girardin was a daughter not a wife. More information can be found in Fremont,Ohio at the Hayes Presidential Center. Russell Opper before his death did a great job of finding lost information and found many cousins. His wife and daughter donated his information to the library at center. I believe it is also on a Family Tree Maker CD.

Hi,

My Conrad or Konrad and Katherina were born in Kurn Hessen Germany and are my gggrandparents. They had one son I know of my ggrandfather Henry Opper who came to America as a young man. He was born in 1845. He married Anna Marie Kurtz , Richfield, Washington Co, Wis. and they settled in Howard City MI.

I would appreciate how you are involved in this. I just know there are more of this family but can't find them. My cousin says Henry went back to Germany the third time and brought his sisters back. I had never heard this until recently. When Henry came he came to work on a large farm. He went back and then when he returned he went to Wisconsin , met my Grandma and they married and moved here. They had 12 children of which there were two sets of twins.

Please write me back.
