My name is Naomi Oquendo my father never met his father my grandmother was from Juncos Puerto Rico then moved to Chicago. My fathers name is David Oquendo my grandmothers name was Alicia Martinez. The story we have heard is that my grandfather was from Utuado and he was what in PR they called a quinkayero someone who went from town to town selling diffrent products. Would you know if any of these people did this kind of work?

Mi abuelo fue Demetrio Oquendo y de lo que he encontrado nacio en el 1897 en Utuado, y se caso con Alejandrina Batista, se fueron a vivir a Jayuya donde tuvieron a 8 hijos. Creo que su papa fue Eudocio Oquendo y Eduvije Montalvo. Eso es lo mas lejano q he llegado en el arbol genealogico hasta ahora. Y tu?

My mom always said that all Oquendo's come from the same root. Maybe we are related in some way, Adjuntas is close to Utuado and Jayuya.

My mom is Feliciano's daughter. Her mother is Leyda. She was raised by one her uncles. She does not know much about her father only that he moved to Pennsylvania then to California, then died when she was about 6 which would put his death in 1958. Norma.....I have no exact answer in regards to Valetin Fontanez, however, the name doesn't show on any of the census I have. I will list the names on the Census that I now have.

1920 Census
Municipio: San Juan
Barrio: Ballaja

Ceferino Oquendo 58 married to Rita Feliciano Y Umpierre de Oquendo 51. Unsure if her last name is Felician or Feliciano. In 1920 census it is spelled Feliciano. In 1910 census it is spelled Rita Felician Y Umpierre.

Their children and ages in 1920:

Angelina (unsure of first name) Oquendo Y Feliciano de Andino 25, Maria 22, Guillermo 27, Rafael 19, and Mercedes Andino Y Oquendo 4. Mercedes is listed as Nieta. Perfecto Lugo is listed as ahijado. In 1910 the kids are listed as last name Oquendo Y Felician.

Next on the Census is: (lived next to each other??)

Son of Ceferino and Rita: Valentin Oquendo Y Felician(o) 34. (the O is missing on form). His wife: Hipolita Rodriguez de Oquendo 32.

Their Children:
Miguel Oquendo y Rodriguez 13, Ines 7, Lydia 5, Cerafina 3, Miguel Rafael 8 mo old.

I was told this may be Ceferino's brother married to Hipolita's sister. Unsure.

Ignaciao Oquendo Y Nabarra 42 (hard to read the handwriting/unsure if Nabarra is the correct spelling). Married to Magdalena Rodriguez Hernandez 23.

Their Children in 1910: Norberto Oquendo Y Rodriguez 10, Agustine 8, Victoria 6, Juana 4. In the same household there were two more names. Juan Rodriguez Y Galarza 47 listed as suegro and Fidela Oquendo Y Miranda 43 listed as suegra. The "Y" may be a mispell on census takers part?

On April 2, 1924 Miguel Oquendo is a listed passenger on the SS San Juan that arrived to Port of New York, NY on April 7, 1924. His birthday is listed as Dec 26, 1906 and states his age at 17 years of age. His destination address was listed as: 1950 Second Ave, NYC. He had 3 children with Muriel Ingram in New York. The childrens names are: Sandy, Patrick, and Edward Oquendo. My father is Patrick. If anyone has any information, please contact me.

My mother name was Beatrice Oquendo and she was born some time in Ponce P.R. sometime in 1920's. She had three sister named Tomas,Flora y Otilia and I believe one brother. Hey i was reading the posts and its very interesting hearing from all of you . Im coming from both ends of the spectrum considering that according to my dad i am filipino,spanish,chinese and japanese all from my dads side who like all of youselves as well as i are Oquendo's. Also, he said i might have some peurto rican and brazillian roots. I realy would love to find out my true roots considering my dad does not quite know for certain and its hard for me to distinguish who i am.

Hi Mike, the Oquendo last name comes from Alava, Spain in the Basque Province (it's near the French border). There's actually a town called Okondo. I'm originally from Cuba so I guess the admiral got around the west indies and parts unknown since there are a lot of us in PR, Cuba, Jamaica, and from these posts apparently in the Philippines as well! Unfortunately I can only go back to the late 1700's with my family tree. So I'm trying to work from the origin (Okondo) forward now to see if I can make it back to Cuba.

My name is Vanessa Oquendo, VanessaY Y being my married last name. And I was always told that all Oquendos are related to one another, if you're an Oquendo you're bound to be family I was also told our family name derives from Spain. How true is this? That's why I joined to find out. Because I always wondered, how can a loooong list of Oquendos be related to one another. My grandfather lived and died in Vieques PR his name was Angel Oquendo, he had my uncle Angel Oquendo and father Miguel Oquendo from my grandmother. But he also had several other children from several other women. In who's names I do not know. Only one, Elba Oquendo I don't know if she has children herself. I don't know much about my father's side of the family at all but a small few. Two other aunts and their children and that's it! So.. Who's family out there? lol would love to find out and get to know you! :)

So is that how we're all related?! Wow =/.. My mom always told me we were all some how interrelated with each other. That all Oquendo's are related I didn't know it was because our ancestors married amongst each other. My dad is an Oquendo. His name is Miguel Oquendo his brother Angel Oquendo who was a boxer in the 60's I believe. Their father's name was Angel Oquendo who lived in Vieques PR. Their sister's name is Elba. I only know of two other aunts and three other cousins and that's it! I was also told our family name does derive from Spain. My name is Vanessa Oquendo by the way.

You are correct many Oquendo's did come from Spain and landed in Puerto Rico and Cuba. I unfortunately don't know much more, my mom whom knew a lot has been forgeting a lot for the past 10 years and what little she passed on relates to the close family, however I would share what I do know in hopes that it will help. My grandfather lived in the middle of the island his name was Demetrio Oquendo and he had a large family, and though some stayed in Jayuya like him, others migrated throughout Puerto Rico (Bayamon) and even further to New York.

Most of my life i was told i was only Italian but i can see where i look a little Spanish. I've looked our name up and found that we can from Spain? Is this true? My name is Jacqueline Oquendo and I am very interested in learning about the Proyecto Apellido Oquendo. Both my maternal and paternal ancestors hail from Puerto Rico. From what I understand, my paternal family may have a very interesting history. The Problem is that I don't know any of it.

As the years go by, I find myself wondering about my true origins and my ancestral background. I am hoping that I can find at least some of the missing puzzles. Even though I am unaware of my family's past, I have always been proud of my unique name - OQUENDO. Ascertaining kinship by means of a yDNA (paternal line) testing is something that is extremely important to me.

I would like more information on how I can become involved in the project. Any details you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, My name is Beth Oquendo I also live in NEW YORK and am also looking for information on my father AGAPITO OQUENDO he was also born in Puerto Rico in 1933. He has or had a daughter named Sandra & a son named Agapito(Peter). I don't have much information on him only that he and his family lived in the Bronx/Mahattan area. another Oquendo from cuba, and there are a bunch of us that have migrated to miami, fl from cuba(from 50+ easy) and from there we have spread out to the west coast of florida, South florida, south carolina.....

I also met an Oquendo from columbia once.
