Hi Bruce

Thanks for the info. Those names didn't ring any bells but I now have more info. About 6 years ago my oldest son started the search for ancestors and he went to the cemetary where my parents, all 4 grandparents and 2 great-grandparents are buried. Other family members are also there, different last names but all in the same area. They were kind enough to give him a copy of the interment records for each.

Included was the record for Anna Van Pietersom b 22 Aug 1856, d 4 Oct 1936. I don't know why but I have never done a search on her before. I did so now using the dates. I did find a Census record for Anna in 1910 showing her widowed and living with her married daughter Minnie. She also had a 12 year old son Walter. The Census record showed Walter's father was born in NY. I found another record for 1920 showing Anna and Walter still living together but no longer with Minnie married name Gutchern.

I don't know what connection she may have to my family. She was 12 years older than my great-grandfather. I'm guessing she was either an unmarried sister or the wife of an older brother. But why buried alone? Unless she was married to Anton buried in Union Cemetary and someone misread a 6 for a 0 in a handwritten record. See below.

I also found an Anna b about 1850 married to Anton also b abt 1850 who died 12 Oct 1887 and is buried in Union Cemetary, Milwaukee. He was also found on Census of 1880 in Milwaukee with family. It says he was a cigar maker. My great-grandfather John was a cigar maker. Anton and Anna's children are given as Anna, Antonia and Anton.

A 1900 census record of my great-grandfather John M says his parents were both born in Holland.

I've found many transcriptions of census records to be a bit off, the handwriting hard to read. Perhaps "Anton" is a shortened version of Antonius? I'm also wondering if Richard might also have had a brother John?

I'm still trying to connect the dots. Maybe some of this info works for you?

I'll be in touch if I can find more and would appreciate it if you would let me know of anything you find.

Laurie

Dear Laurie:

Thanks for the response!
We likely are not related...very closely, anyway.

But, I have a little info on Janet's Van Pietersom family given to me by a kind lady who checked the Milwaukee Library.
Janet's mother was Gertrude Van Pietersom.
Gertrude's father was Arthur Van Pietersom, born in Milwaukee in 1883.
Arthur's father was Richard Van Pietersom (erroneously misspelled in various places as " Van Peterson), born in New York City.
Richard's father was Antonius Van Pietersom, born in Holland, Europe.
I have guessed, from records, that Richard had a brother named Antonius.

I haven't check yet, but I beleive all this is in my family tree online in Ancestor.com.

Did any names ring a bell?
--Bruce
GRANDMOTHER'S FAMILY - ORBAN IN WISCONSIN - UPDATE

Since posting my original query, I have learned the following information:

My grandmother, Laura Margarthe Henritta Orban was the daughter of Alfred Adam Orban and Johanna Underberg. Johanna was born in the Netherlands. Alfred was born in Milwaukee, the son of Freidrich and Margarthe (Eichard) Orban. Both were born in Germany. Alfred died 5 Oct 1894, 5 weeks after my grandmother was born. There was a son Alvin born in 1891 and another daughter, Alma (Mrs. Theordore Jahnke) born in 1893. Alfred had several siblings.

Johanna was the daughter of Johann and Henrika (Pothaar) Underberg. Johanna was the only daughter but had 5 brothers.

I would love to hear from anyone decended from these persons and to learn more about them.
Hello Bruce

I'm not "Barb" and don't know if your message will go to her. Her post was a reply to my original post as stated in the subject line.

My grandfather was Arthur John Van Pietersom, son of John and Crescentia (Rauch) Van Pietersom. He was born 2 Oct 1893 in Milwaukee. He did not have a granddaughter named Janet but he did have 4 brothers who may have had a son named Arthur. I know there was a Bertin and a Harold but I'm not sure of any others.

There is also the possibility that your wife's family is decended from a brother of my Great-Grandfather John. I don't know anything about siblings he may have had.

Perhaps any information you wife has regarding her Van Pietersom ancestors would help us make a connection. I know there weren't a lot of them.

Laurie

I'm looking for any and all information on my paternal grandmother's family. Her name was Laura Margarita Henrietta Orban. She married Arthur Van Pietersom in the late 19teens or very early 20's in Milwaukee, Wis. She had a sister Alma who's only child (son) died in WWII. I can't recall her last name. I think there was a brother too. They may have been born in Germany or Holland or the parents were. Orban may not have been their "birth name". Any info will be greatly appreicated!!

I just read your reply to the message board. You asked if I knew anything else about my father. The only other piece of paper that I have is a letter written in German to my mother. Enclosed in the letter is a document with the following information. It is written in Hungarian and I do not know what it says. I am going to type it in exactly as it is. NYILATKOZAT. Orban Miklos olaszfan 1962aprilis 20 an elhalt olaszfai lakos hagyateka ugyeban gyermekem, kiskoru orban Ruth torvenyes kepviselojekent kepviselettemmel a hagyateki eljarsban, anyosomat, ozvegy orban miklosne vara anna olaszfai lakost bizom meg. egyben kiskoru orban ruth neveben az oroksegre igenyt tartok. Could you translate it for me and let me know who these names are? I know my father had a brother and his family owned a farm. My mother did not keep in contact with them after my father died. I am very excited to hear something after two years. Thank you for your help. Ruth

My grandfather Louis Orban came from Hungary. He had a brother -Gasper. I know there were other family members but have never met them. If you research Canada, all provinces, you will note that there are plenty of Orbans from Hungary around here. My grandfather had, I believe 18 children. He died in 1990 at the age of 96. I hope this helps you. My cousin Tim Orban from Whitecourt Alberta, Canada has done alot of research with respect to our family. He has maps, names etc. I am not at home so I do not have his email. Good Luck. Wanda Lamothe nee Orban.

Actually I was just fooling around, punching in names of old friends when I saw your message. Going back to high school in the 60's, a classmate and neighbor/friend was Ervin Orban. He had a younger brother "Gabe", and a "kid" brother whose name I do not recall. That was in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Many of the kids I knew were from Latvian, Hungarian, and other European families "displaced" after WW II. Ervin didn't know for sure where in Europe he was born, as I recall.
Anyway, Michigan might be one good search locale. Good luck!

My grandmother was a Orban from Budapest..

Who knows, we may be distantly related, although I have been told Orban is as common in Hungary as Smith is in the states. My grandmother Amelia had three sisters and one brother in the states. Another brother stayed in Hungary but in a different area than Budapest when he died. Her two sisters lived in the Cleveland area, as well as her brother. Grandma lived in Chicago. They were born in the late 1880's. I can give a little info if you need it but I don't have much. There is a site devoted to Orbans, run by a Belgium statesmen named Andrea Orban. It's in english/french and Hungarian. Sorry, I can't remember the address. Good luck!

I am doing the research on the Orban name for my daughter. I don't know much yet, but this is what I have found out:My Grandfather (on my dad's side) was married to Margaret Orban; Her parents were (Mother)Rose Orban and her step father was Adam Ruder. My grandfathers side was:Adam Ruder and Rose Orban (As you can see, it is quite complicated. They were step-brother and sister). Rose Orban was a resident of East Chicago Indiana for more than 60 years. She had four daughters: Elizabeth, Margaret, Ann, and Betty. Two sons: Peter and William. She had two brothers: Steven and James (Both in Europe). Any one who could help me research some more, I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks. Any information, please e-mail me at : maggie402901@mchsi.com

Re: Orban, Nicholas

I don't know if this is the Nicholas (Miklos Orban) or not, but my Grandmother was born Suzanna Orban in Hungary in 1902. She didn't speak much english but I remember her talking about a brother. She married Karl Schuster, they had 6 children all over the place, Hungry, Romainia etc. and came to the US via New York sometime in the late 40's early 50's. If you have more info or think they may have been related, please let me know. Suzanna's mothers maiden name is noted as Borbe, but I can't confirm it.

Orban, Kovach, Tokoley, Denny, Heyszzg

My great grandparents were Joseph Orban and Mary Magda Kovach (I'm not sure how to spell her last name properly. it's an americanized version). They lived in Tiltonsville, Ohio. Joseph's parents were Steve Orban and Rose Denny, both from Hungary, and Mary's parents were Steve Paul Kovach and mary Tokoley. I am also a descendent of Frank Denny and Elizabeth Heyszzg. It is very hard to find information on Hungarian ancestors, and I need all the help I can get.
