Mary Hambley Orchard (b. abt. 1801, Eng) arrived NY May 1840 aboard the ship, Philadelphia, along with children Anne Marie, Samuel, Francis and Mary. Also with her was James Orchard (b. abt. 1815 Eng) but it is unclear if this was her son. Point of departure was London. Mary joined husband John Orchard (b. abt. 1791 Eng) and the family settled in Poughkeepsie, as per 1840 census. It remains unclear as to where/when John and Mary were married. I do not know when John came to NY or whether he came through NY, Virginia, Canada or elsewhere. Family lore tells of some affiliation with Scotland but I haven't been able to prove this. Daughters Jane and Catherine were born in NY. John and Mary are buried in New Hamburgh.

I appreciate all of the information that everyone has shared. I can shed more light on the diffusion of the Isle of Wight Orchards. Their story begins in the 1750’s in western IoW when William Orchard was born. Their family lived in IoW until, four generations later, in 1852, when William III settled in Toronto area (Bowmanville, Ontario) and married a woman from Cornwall, Emma Coleman. Their family grew a cluster of Orchards in the Toronto area. Later generations grew large clusters of Orchards in Washington, Michigan, and North Dakota. From those large clusters, smaller clusters have settled in Minnesota, Oregon, and California. This diffusion is by no means complete, the further diffusion of the large Michigan cluster is not yet known.

I wonder if there is a link out there somewhere that links the Cornwall Orchards to the IoW Orchards. My grandmother always had a hunch that there was a relation too. I have a contact that has IoW Orchard contacts and I will have to ask if there is any connection known by them.

I also wonder which branch contributed to the Orchards in Australia. That may have been the IoW Orchards, since the IoW was a resupply stop for the prison ships on their way to Australia.

Does anyone know about any connection between the Urquharts of Cromarty, Scotland and any of the Orchard branches? It is possible that the Orchards, or at least some of the Orchards, are a breakaway from that Scottish clan.
Re: Orchard / Urquhart Connection?

Hi Justin
I am a member of the Orchard family who came from Stirling, Scotland to South Australia in 1852. I am a direct descendant of William Orchard (abt 1812-1881) and Catherine Robertson (abt 1831-?). William was born in Leicester, England and Catherine in Stirling, Scotland. Catherine's father is identified as Bengemen on their marriage record of 1848 (in Stirling). My paternal Grandad also spoke of a link between the names Urquhart and Orchard. He had been told that some of the Urquharts changed their name to Orchard when they emigrated to make it easier to say and spell. I haven't been able to verify any of this and sadly, Grandad passed away when I was just 4yrs old. I welcome any info you may come across in your search. Meanwhile, I suggest you look up www.houseofnames.com as they have a reference to the Orchard/Urquhart question
Regards and keep in touch
Tanya

Janice,
I'm intrigued about Mary Beedham that married Joseph Orchard. My family of Beedhams [lots of variants in teh spelling ]came from County Down Ireland, they moved to Durham in 1844/5. We know there is a link to Ballynahinch but keep coming up against brick walls. Do you know any more about Mary Beedham?

Here are my notes on Joseph Orchard. I know his parents and all of his descendants.

- he enlisted in the British army at the age of 19
- a soldier (stationed #746) with the 68th Regiment (The Durhams) who "served under Wellington in Spain", then he was stationed in Ireland (where he married Mary Beedham)
- then later in [North] America 1818-29 ending on October 24, 1829, He received his honourable discharge in 1831 (he also served a short stint in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada)
- he retired in 1831 with a grant of land (south half of lot 14 Con.11 Innisfil) - he moved to Innisfil (a few miles south of Barrie, Ontario, Canada) and sent for his family of five in 1833 (they had stayed in Toronto)
- in later years, they lived on a 14 acre lot near Craigvale
- he died of a broken neck as the result of a fall while fighting a fire in the roof of his home

Let me know if this helps.

Hi Justin - I'm aware of 2 Orchard branches:
1. Cornwall, which settled up into Devon and north through Bristol and can be traced as far as Wotton under Edge. They have some involvement with shipping in Bristol, and may have emigrated from that port.
2. The Gloucestershire group, which seems to have come from Berkshire through Wiltshire (see Bill Archard's reply). The name in Gloucester became Orchard (pronounced Archard in Glos. dialect). They settled as far north as North Nibley, but seemed to be entirely separate (per land, intermarriage, religion, and civil records) from group 1.
I have seen occasional references to an IOW group, but only later dates (prob. 1750 on) Do you think they might be part of the Cornwall family (think seafaring)? And of course the name could arise in distinct groups who happen to live near a group of fruit trees!
Good luck with your migration routes project.

Margaret Melaney
researching Orchard/Archard of the Severn Vale

Possibly your Alexander Orchard is a brother of William Orchard whose ancestry seems to lie in Cornwall, England. See the WorldConnect website of Michael Woods. Search for William Orchard who married Elizabeth Crooke in Madison County, Kentucky on 29 March 1798.

I doubt that your Alexander was actually born in Kentucky that early. Perhaps further east in the colonies, or even back in Cornwall.

Yes, Barbara is my informant, so I presume you have the file.... Descendants of Thomas Orchard. as it was she who sent it to me. I have worked sideways filling in marriages and children but as you say pre 1730 is difficult. I imagine there are quite a few people hunting that one down. I also find the very late 1800 early 1900 a problem. Roll on the 1911 census

I have had one instance of an Orchard being transcribed as Archard.

Unfortunately the link you sent doesn't work so would you check it please I would love to see the docs. I am off to bed now but will be back on line tomorrow evening.
Regards Anita

Think that's it Ann, they were a very close knit family and when I have traced my particular branch through over a hundred years they were all living near each other. At one point when the Webb-Orchards moved to Stroud there was about ten families on one street! Hope I have helped a little. Regards Anita

My family line is from Charles and Mary Davis, it has taken me a long time to find the line as my maiden name is Webb. They changed their surnames between Webb, Orchard, Orchard-Webb and even Webb-Orchard. I went to Wotton under Edge and Stroud last spring and walked around the old village and saw the alms houses where James died and of course took photos etc. I also had info sent from NZ about Ann, who was transported to Tasmania and Maria who emigrated there. I would imagine we have similar information from there.
Regards Anita

Hello Ann, I've just got in from work and couldn't wait to have a look for a reply from you. I can see what you mean about Hannah's father being John Orchard, they were probably 2nd cousins but at the moment I can't be sure. I will have a good search around my paperwork and see if I can spot anything. It is very likely that, that is the case as, if John is her father then Hannah (Ball) is her mother, and she would be named for her. Will post soon. Anita

Ann, I am not sure but I may have found their marriage on Familysearch, but Hannah is registered as Harriet. This is the right James as his mother is recorded correctly as Mary. The date given though is 25th May 1841 in Bristol. What do you think? By the way it is an extracted entry and not a submitted one.

John is James' uncle and is married to Hannah Ball and William and Thomas are their sons. This is the most difficult of families. In later years they change their names as and when they feel like it. Although they were Orchards they get their surname from their mother Mary Orchard, she didn't marry James Webb until the children were grown up and then the children were Webb or Orchard or Orchard-Webb or even Webb-Orchard as the whim took them!!! It looks as if Daniel is living with James and Hannah in 1851 in Sinwell!! Anita
Thanks for the information Anita. I looked years ago for the death of William Allen and the subsequent marriage of his widow Hannah in W-U-E without success. I was then thrown by the name John Orchard on the 1841 census and what appeared to be the three Allen boys living on their own. I didn't know about Susannah and can only presume she died as a small child as she is not on the 1841 census. Since Hannah must have been 44 years old when she was born I doubt there would have been any more. Many many thanks. Ann

What I have is my three Allen Boys, William, Alfred and Daniel living in Sinwell, WUE, either next door to or within the same building as John Orchard and Hannah aged 70 and 65 with William and Thomas Orchard 35 and 20. Are these the parents of James Orchard. Otherwise, why have my family been pushed out of the family home!!! Ann.

Thanks again, Anita. Yes, Daniel is back living with his mother in '51. William has emigrated and Alfred is married - this is my line. Not being able to find any marriage for Hannah and James the 51 census was my only real proof that they were married. Incidentally, Daniel married an Elizabeth Webb, father William.
Any idea, how I can find Hannah's marriage to James. I'm sure I searched the WUE register prettily thoroughly although it was about 20 years ago.
Cheers, Ann.

Hello again. If its the right James Orchard then I should think there is no doubt that it is Hannah although given as Harriet. As you hint this might be a transcription error. You can see how coming at it from the Allen side and not being sure whether it was James or John that she married I dismissed this as being the wrong one. With the '41 census taken on the 7 June they must have been just married and perhaps trying to sort out where to live. That leaves the question of Susannah. Was Hannah her mother.

I am more than grateful to you for your help.

Ann.

Re: Alex and Mary Orchard from Spring Valley, MO

Spankydoodah, last year you provided me with the newspaper article from Senator Orchard's sudden trip to Texas in May 1901 for the funeral of your great-uncle, Alex Orchard, and that gave me an approximate death date for him, which I did not have before. Now, I have just found something on the Hunt Co, Tex GenWeb site of a listing of the 1901 deaths that I thought you would find interesting:

"Drank Wood Alcohol.
News was brought to the city from Neyland yesterday coming of the death of Mr. A. Orchard of that community. He had for some time past been very disconsolate and tried to drown his sorrows in drink. It seems that he had been in our city for several days but had returned home on Thursday.
Friday afternoon he went to a store at Neyland and made the remark that "he was mighty dry" and asked for some stimulant. He was told they had nothing but wood alcohol. He walked back and took one spoonful, diluted, then followed it up with several other doses, with the usual result. It is said that there had been some family troubles but no investigation or inquest of the body held by the authorities. Doubtless this drink was taken with suicidal intent, the deceased not being in his right mind at the time."
Greenville Herald.
The Commerce Journal-April 26, 1901

Seeking other descendents of Alexander Orchard and his first wife, Sarah Owen. They had five children: Nancy, William, Levi, James, and Josie.

I continue to search for proof of Alexander's parents.

Anyone else researching this family?
