Well thank goodness! I have purchased many old books on Berkshire Co. Mass. to locate the parents of these Orcutt girls. While the John Tullar family of Egremont is fairly well documented a couple of the wives are not. Margaret Orcutt's John Tullar was actually John Tullar the 4th.

And the name is Tullar, not "Fuller". Much genealogy mis-information has been created due to the old script style of the letter "T" vs the letter "F" including inaccurate DAR records and local histories.
We who descend from Margaret Orcutt and John Tullar thank you. I will apply with Moses and furnish any further information you may require. I understand the overwhelming task of tracing the Orcutts, as I have done the same as the co-coordinator for the Crippen/Crippin family surname.
B. Wyatt

Yikes - my full page reply was erased! I'll try to remember what I typed...

To tackle your question first, I prefer the Orcutt male for verification because in part (and in total) I've chosen to trace the male lines of the Orcutt family. I've stopped capturing the Orcutt female lines at teh point of their marriages, with a sole exception being if the Orcutt female was a single mother and carried on the Orcutt name with her children. I do have some female Orcutt lines I've carried a generation or two, but not many. This is simply because the Orcutt male tracing has been overwhelming as it is.

And the short answer to your missing Orcutt sisters is this: they're daughters of Moses Orcutt and Elizabeth Slater. Available records actually have them marrying John and Paul "Fuller" (respectively). I have them both in my database as marrying Fullers. My guess is the records were either transcribed incorrectly or captured phonetically.

Hope that is helpful!

Matt

Jacob Orcutt, Maine

I applied to the DAR under Jacob ORCUTT b. 1737 in Cohasset, Mass. and was denied. They stated that although in the past they accepted previous applicants now they have decided that he did not serve in the Revolutionary War. Jacobwas the son of Ebenezer and Deliverence KINGMAN. He married Abigail JAMES in 1763 in Cohasset and then moved to Brooksville, Maine. My question is this, does anyone have any proof that he was a Revolutionary War soldier?

Re: Orcutt genealogy - now online

Entering the Orcutt male is the origin of our families Orcutt descendancy problem.
You see we are dealing with an Orcutt female. Margaret Orcutt born April 17 1774 with death Feb 26 1837, buried Egremont in Tullar Family cemetery with husband John Tullar
Death date source: Early Burial Grounds in Egremont Massachusetts, Tullar Cemetary and additionally confirmed by Mark Dewey Research Center in Berkshire Co., Mass.

See Tullar Message Board post of 8 Nov 2002 by b52wyatt
Within this post I transcribed an original handwritten recollection of Ermina Tullar Crippen, in which she identifies Margaret Orcutt as her mother. She identifies Polly Orcutt as sister of Margaret Orcutt, stating Polly Orcutt sister to your grandmother married Paul Tullar. (Paul was a brother to John Tullar, husband of Maragaret Orcutt). It is my belief that Ermina probably knew who her Mother was.

In communication with another Orcutt family historian, there was no conclusive evidence of the father of Margaret Orcutt. However they, as I, tentively placed Margaret as the daughter of Joseph Orcutt Jr. and Temperance Loomis while stating they have never in 30 years of research, identified either parent of Margaret Orcutt. Or Polly her sister.
Only children consistently identified for this Joseph and Temperance are: James, Sarah, Benjamin, Peter, William, Daniel and Isaac. It must also be noted the Loomis family had a strong relationship with the Tullar and Crippen families in Berkshire Co.

Now lets look at another Margaret Orcutt record.
Margaret Orcutt, daughter of Moses Orcutt & Elizabeth Slater was born in Tyringham, Berkshire Co., MA, in April 1772. Source documentation: Vital Records of Tyringham to 1850. This is curiously close to John Tullar’s Margaret Orcutt birthdate and to the John and Margaret Egremont residence.

It seems the trail of Moses Orcutt’s Margaret goes nowhere after the birth record.

The question is: When dealing with an Orcutt female and unsure of the Orcutt male, what would you prefer as verification?

Barbara W.
I have found several new family members on your line, particularly the families of the 14 children of Horace Beals Orcutt and Lucinda or Lurinda Sheldon. The two oldest sons were soldiers in the Vermont 13th Regiment during the Civil War and were part of the 2nd Brigade famous flanking movement against General Pickett during the Battle of Gettysburg. I found wonderful bios about these two brothers with a photo of Rodney. There are a few descendancies that I have been able to trace to living generations that may be mentioned in obituaries I have been able to locate online. Lots of census, military, and other records have helped me fill in quite a bit of information on the Kenneth Elbert Hacking Family Tree. However, the more I find, the places I have to look for more family. There are many things I would ask you to add or clarify. Other surnames: Jewett, Thomas, Miles, Sawyer, McDowell, Folsom, Wood, Kelly/Kelley, Flanders, Hanscom, Fletcher, and Russell.

If you don't have access to Ancestry.com, let me know and I will send you an invitation. As I am doing the research, I attach the records and other trees that contain the family members. If you can open up those resources and trees, you can find out the data and others who have this information in their trees. I still have quite a few family members to add to your line, and I expect that you may have some corrections to suggest.

As of today, I have filled in and documented some of the descendants and their spouses of Ida May's father John C. Orcutt and mother Ester Elizabeth Fowler. I am trying to find more documentation and children of Ida May's grandfather Jacob Orcutt born in Connecticut and his wife Sarah or Sally ?Higgins? I also have been doing some quick descendancy research for Ida May and her husband Ephriam Elijah Bemis (your grandparents). Please check it out and see if what I have so far fits with your research. Yes, I would be interested in more information from you. It is my goal to find all the descendants of all my immigrant ancestors as well as those of my husband's. I need all the help I can get.

No, I do not know where Joseph Irving Orcutt and his wife are buried. They are not listed in GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN, a book of Chesterfield County burials.
As a Virginia native, you probably know that many people from Chesterfield County moved to Richmond, which is just north of the county, across the James River. Some land that used to be in Chesterfield is now in Richmond. For example, Hollywood Cemetery, a famous old cemetery, is south of the James. Depending on where they lived, you may want to check Richmond cemeteries, too.
I have no ORCUTT ancestors.
Cynthia Craig,b.abt 1870 in Nova Scotia married William Orcutt in 1893. They lived in Malden,Ma. and had four children: Arthur,b.1893,Frederick,b.1896, Ernest,b.1899 and Robert,b.1904. They are all listed in the 1900 census. In 1910 three of the boys were listed as Orcutts with Frederick and Florence Callahan. Florence was William's sister. In the 1920 census Ernest and Robert are listed with the Callahans as Callahans. Arthur Orcutt also lived with them. I'm not sure what happened to Frederick but I think he lived elsewhere. I can not find what happened to William and Cynthia. Any info will be appreciated. The Callahans were my grandparents. I knew the boys as my uncles.

Hi there -

In 1910 you can find Fred in Vermont working as a servant in Windsor County, and again in 1920 down in Georgia where he's a solider in the U.S. army. He shows up again in 1942 in Massachusetts for his WWII draft registration card (5'4" and 208lbs) and lists F.M. Callahan as his contact.

I pick William up in a Canadian census (Nova Scotia) in 1920 as a house painter, which would line up with his profession as a painter in the 1900 census. My educated guess says they moved back to Nova Scotia where Cynthia died. William remarries to Catherine Quigley in 1920.

Hope that helps!

For the best puzzle solvers - Orcutt mystery #3: Virgil G. Orcutt

Okay Orcutt genealogists, here goes. In the process of assembling the Orcutts in America genealogy, I've run across some really good "puzzles" - folks I just can't seem to place. Let's see what you can do...find the parents of:

Virgil G. Orcutt
b. Jan 14, 1907
d. Jan 1996
m. Josephine Rodriguez (b. 1911) in Mar 1935. Both are from East St. Louis.

1930 IL census (St. Clair County, East St. Louis, ED 67, Page 13b)
Emil C. Krause (43)	1887 IL	US	US
Lulu E. (44) 1886 IL
Ethel L. (14) 1916 IL
Dorothy E. (12) 1918 IL
Virgil G. Orcutt (22)	1908 IL	IL	IL	Clerk – railroad (nephew)

1920 IL census (St. Clair County, East St. Louis, ED 172, Page 10b)
Miles G. Thomas (55)	1865 IL	TN	IL
Susie (53) 1867 IL	IL	VT
Grace (26)(divorced)	1894 IL	IL	IL
Virgil Orcutt (12)	1908 IL	MO	IL	grandson

In 1910, Miles Thomas has Susie (wife), Lulu (daughter) and Grace (daughter) in the house. Lulu is above who married Emil Krause, so she’s ruled out as Virgil’s mother. Grace is in the house and single, so that leaves one additional daughter (Carrie) who is Virgil’s mother (b. Jan 1887) who shows up in the 1900 census.

Carrie Thomas married J.R. Orcutt on Jan 18, 1905 in St. Clair County.
Jan 4, 1991

Mother was Eva Gerard (b. 1901 in Concord, NH)

1920 NH census (Merrimack County, Boscawan, ED 59, Page 9a)
Fred Gerard (45) - Head
Eva Orcutt (19) – Daughter
Wallace Orcutt (1) – Grandson NH-NH-NH
Ruth Orcutt (4/12) – Granddaughter NH-NH-NH
Eva is listed as married (not widowed)

1930 NH census (Merrimack County, Concord, ED 26, Page 1b)
Acel Quimby (31)
Eva M. Stanley shows up in 1917 working in Boscawan, NH. His home address is listed as Newark, NJ on his WWI draft application, birthplace as Worcester, MA, and employment as a machinist in Concord, NH. He’s listed as “single” and shows up in 1920/1930 in NJ, married with children.
2.	Eva is either divorced or a widow in 1920. If she’s a widow, it’s possible her husband (Orcutt) was a World War I casualty from NH or MA. If she’s divorced, the number of options increases greatly.
I have her passing away in 1909 in Whitman, WA.

Good question about the father...no clue. My best guess has her having a brother named Luther (b. 1810 in NY). Luther shows up near her quite often.

Re: William Orcutt (2nd)

Always fun to reply to your own post, but I think I have found the answer to the William Orcutt^2 puzzle. I have now been convinced that Hannah Newton was not William Orcutt, Jr.'s third wife and that William Orcutt. Jr., did not in fact have a third wife.

The Internet openlibrary has a copy of the Newton genealogy on-line and the documents in the genealogy pretty much agree with my original post. The author of the genealogy, Ermina Newton Leonard, (published in 1915) does us a favor by quoting Moses Newton's will - in it, Moses first gives his son-in-law John Bellows 5 shillings. This ties John Bellows in with this family as other web sites had speculated. This does not, however, cinch the matter. Two paragraphs later in the will, however, Moses Newton gives to the children of his daughters Hannah Bellows and Mercy Leonard one shilling. This links Hannah Newton, daughter of Moses and Joanna (Larkin) Newton as wife of John Bellows.

Ms. Newton later says that even though there is no record of the marriage (I wonder if the Vital Records transcription is muddled) that the will provides surety that the marriage did take place. And further says that many had thought she married William Orcutt, Jr.

Moses' brother Joseph had a daughter Hannah, but she married Simon Maynard and they both died in 1747/48, eliminating her as a possibility. Daniel and Isaac Newton, last two brothers of Moses, had no known daughter Hannah,

While I haven't checked the third generation, Given the birth years of the children in the second generation, I think too much would have passed to make a marriage between William Orcutt and a third generation daughter (probably born 30 years after William) probably.

Frank Hartwell Orcutt, b May 18, 1884 in Massachusetts. In the 1900 Census he is listed with his mother, Alice and his step-father. The name is not 100% legible, however. Later, he moved to RI and then back to MA. Any info on his real father, his mother, and/or his siblings will be appreciated.

Brothers George W. "Willie" b. 1871 and "Eddie" b.1873 MN.

Willie and Eddie Orcott are found on the 1880 census living with their grandmother Harriett Vannorman in Raymond, Stearns Co., Minnesota. Their parents were C. L. and Adelia (Edelyn) Vannorman Orcott. He was born in Massachusetts about 1844. She was born about 1849 in New York. C. L. and Adelia Orcott are on the 1870 census with son George W. in Sauk Center, Stearns Co., MN.
Does anyone relate? Would like to find out what happened to the boys and to their parents after the 1880 census they seem to have all disappeared.

Re: Looking for descendants of William Orcutt, our immigrant ancestor.

I am excited to have them full--especially as I can connect sources and fill in the generations of descendants to find living relatives who will help collaborate with me to correct and extend the story of this family. You can check out my tree in the name of my father Kenneth Elbert Hacking, even though my Orcutt line goes through my mother, Laurel Maud Small's line. I met Judy Orcutt Holy a couple of years ago and she gave me quite a bit, which I am slowly adding to the tree (I am also working on all my other lines as well). I have been trying to connect those who reply to this post, such as just lately trying to connect Ida May Orcutt or the post from the 23rd. By the way, when you and I swapped emails back in 2007, you mentioned that your records show different parents for my ancestor Mary Ann Orcutt married to Isaiah Nickerson. There are actually two cousins with the same name who were born the same year that married the same man. My ancestor was the second wife, who married Isaiah after his first wife had died in 1843. According to the records I have found, Isaiah had 6 children with (1) Mary Ann Orcutt daughter of Emerson Orcutt and Jane Hardison Fletcher, and 3 children (including my 2nd great grandmother Henrietta Godfrey Nickerson) with (2) Mary Ann Orcutt daughter of Seth Orcutt and Anna Fletcher. The Mary Ann Orcutts not only shared a husband and birth year, but also both sets of grandparents, since Seth and Emerson were brothers and Jane and Anna were sisters. To make this even more intertwined, a third sister Margaret Fletcher married to Zelotes Grover was grandmother of Horatio Southgate Hapworth, husband of Henrietta Godfrey Nickerson. Between the fact that they seemed to really be intertwined and the fact that they named their children with many of the same names, it makes it quite challenging to determine who is the correct person. Another interesting connection with my 2nd great grandfather is that his mother and father were first cousins too through the Grover line as Zelotes Grover's sister Abzubah was married to William Hapworth and they were parents of William Hapworth, husband of Lucetta Grover daughter of Zelotes, and they were parents of Horatio Southgate Hapworth, husband of Henrietta Godfrey Nickerson. Isn't this fun to try to follow? :-)

Orcutt help

I am needing some help tracing family line of Betsey Orcutt (married Pember Howard) daughter of Daniel and Lydia (Cushman?). My family didn't keep very good records so most information I have is a jumbled mess of names and dates that make no sense to anyone still living. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

+
Hi,
So sorry I haven't gotten back to you. I have problems with my printer scanning. In fact, I just mailed a whole package of family tree information to Germany on my father's side of the family. I can print but it won't scan to 3-mail. If you like, please send me your address & I will send you information I have on the Orcutts. The computer shop made double copies for me because I found a cousin of my father's that lives in CA & she wanted info also.
I am working on my father's. mother's (both sides of the family), father-in-law (Orcutts, etc.) & mother-in-law's families!!!! Sometime I wonder why I ever started because once you start you can't stop!!!
Please let me hear from you & how you know about the Orcutts. You may be related to my husband---William & Rufus H. Orcutt(his relative) were brothers!!
Thanks,
Carol

HI,
So glad to hear from you. I will be out of town for a few days but will get back to you when I return. How are you related to William? My husband is related to Rufus H.. Rufus (another son) was born earlier & died & that is why this Rufus has an H. in his name --he was in the Civil War. You can see the list of chidren on my post----there were several. I cannot find anything on Rufus' parents or Betsy Brown's--would you know of anyone that might know?
Are you located in one of the New England states? I will be waiting to hear from you & I will gather my info for you.
Carol
