William Orcutt (2nd)

As many Orcutt researchers well know, William Orcutt (s. of William and Mary/Martha (Lane) Orcutt) has mostly been listed as having three wives - Jane Washburn, Hannah Smith, and Hannah Newton. The marriages of William to Jane and the first Hannah are pretty well documented (see Savage, Mitchell, the John Smith land transfer in Taunton). However, the only reference to the marriage to Hannah Newton I have been able to find (outside of undocumented web sites) is in the History of the Town Marlboro by Hudson. Unluckily, Hudson does not follow the Sarah Newton/William Orcutt line another generation.

Having said this, I still have my doubts about the validity of this marriage. I wil try to summarize my evidence/doubts and hope that someone can dissuade me from doubting the marriage.

1) Marlboro is over 50 miles from Bridgewater. I find no evidence Moses Newton (Hannah's father) and the family lived other than Marlboro. Given the condition of roads and the need to travel on horseback, even the best of horses would take half a day to get to Marlboro and then half a day back - leaving little time for "courting" especially for a farmer who needed to tend his fields.

2) Bridgewater Epitaphs (by Latham) shows Hannah Orcutt, relict of William, died Oct. 7, 1751 at the age of 72 years - placing her birth year in 1679 - the same year Hannah Smith was born.

3) Hannah Newton was born 1673 (see above).

4) Various web sites (mostly undocumented) say that Hannah Newton, daughter of Moses and Joahanna (Larkin) Newton (see History of the Town of Marlboro for the marriage of this Hannah to William) actually married John Bellows of Marlboro.

5) Latham (History of Marlboro) shows John Bellows marrying Hannah ? who died in 1719, aged 46 - placing her birth year 1673, the same year Hannah Newton was born.

6) John Bellows and Hannah (?) (see Latham) named one of their children Moses, possibly after his grandfather, Moses Newton.

7) The History of Marlboro links the Newtons and Bellows in a number of instances, most notably assigning the Newtons to the Bellows garison in times of trouble - possibly indicating a family link.

8) Lastly (and only a weak indicator), the connection between the Bellows and Newtons continues as John and Hannah's daughter Hepzibah married Edward Larkin, probably a close relative through Moses Newton's wife, Johannah Larkin.

If my assumptions are correct, this would make the first three children of William Orcutt (younger) children of his wife Jane and the last 6 children arriving via his second wife Hannah (Smith) Orcutt.

I would appreciate any further insight anyone might have (along with possible sources for any information given and/or reasoning behind the assumption). Thanks for reading this far.

Looking for C. L. Orcott (aged 36 puts him born about 1824) as listed on the 1870 Sauk Center, Stearns Co., MN. census with wife Adelia and son George W. Census states he was born in Massachusetts. 1880 they are gone from the census records and only their sons Willie and Eddie are listed with their grandmother Harriett VanNorman. Name is botched to Vannoraian. The two boys are listed as aged 9 and 7. Wonder if they lived to adulthood and if they married - if so I have more information on their ancestors from the VanNorman line. Leslie

Looking for descendants of William Orcutt, our immigrant ancestor.

I am looking for all the descendants of all of my immigrant ancestors to fill in their lines and their stories. One of my immigrant ancestors is William Orcutt who married Mary Martha Lane 24 Dec 1663 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts. I know there is controversy about his origins and birth date, but my focus is strictly on his descendants at this point. My closest ancestor with the surname of Orcutt is my 3rd great grandmother, Mary Ann Orcutt married to Isaiah Nickerson Jr. Her ahnentafel number is #55 on my pedigree chart, or my mother’s father’s mother’s mother’s mother. Her direct line is listed below.

You can check out more information on the Kenneth Elbert Hacking Public Family Tree on Ancestry.com. Remember, however, that it is still growing and being updated as I find documentation and new resources, including having the time to do it. I value accuracy and original documentation, so please include the sources with your reply, which I will include with any record I attach to my tree.

Isaiah Nickerson Jr. and Mary Ann Orcutt
Daughter of Seth Orcutt and Ann Fletcher
Son of Emerson Orcutt (Senator) and Ann Mansell
Son of Emerson Orcutt and Mary Gardner
Son of Thomas Orcutt and Jane Emerson
Son of William Orcutt and Mary/Martha Lane

I have been and will be excited to have contact with all of my living cousins, and I thank you for your response. If you want direct contact, I would be glad to send you my email address once you reply to this query.

Eileen

Louisa Maria Orcutt / Samuel Orcutt / Eunice Fessenden - Maine

Hello,

My great great grandmother is Louisa Maria Orcutt (born about 1841 in Amherst, Maine and died about 1897 in Brewer, Maine). She was married to John Colbath Honey. I am aware that Louisa Maria was the daughter of Samuel Orcutt and Eunice Fessenden, although I am having some difficulty identifying the parents of Samuel Orcutt. Any information that anyone might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated! Regards, Jim (james.debeck@jdl-usa.com)

I am transcribing the Evergreen Cemetary in Ontario, Malheur Co., Oregon and thought I would post pictures of the Pre-1900 headstones for those interested in having them. This is a very large cemetary, there is a possibility there could be other family members buried here after this time period. If you are interested in them, I can look for them specifically.

Listed on the 1870 census for Stearns County, Minnesota as a painter with wife Adelia (Edelin or Edelia) and son George W. (Willie?) Orcutt. By 1880 they are not listed on any census that I can find. Would like to know what happened to them. Another son was born named "Eddie". These two boys are found on the 1880 census living with their grandmother Harriett VanNorman (name is butchered to Vannoraian on the LDS 1880 census). Harriett is my gggrandmother. Want to know more about this Orcutt family. Leslie <aeriehollow@ellijay.com>

MARY OLCOTT/ORCUTT BEMENT

Does anyone know who the parents of Mary Olcott were? She was born about 1766, in Belchertown, Hampshire County, MA. She died about 1845.

She married Consider Bement, 30 Sep 1786 in Springfield, Hampden County, MA.

Consider was born 25 Feb 1761 in Springfield, Hampden County, MA. He died in the Town of Concord, Erie County, NY, in 1848. Consider, a veteran of the American Revolution, is buried in Spaulding Cemetery, near Springville, Erie Co., NY. I've no idea where Mary is buried.

Their daughter, Mary (Polly) Bement was the wife of my 3rd great-grandfather, John Pratt.

Her name has been spelled OLCOTT and ORCUTT. However, Mary & Consider named one of their sons, OLCOTT, leading me to believe that her maiden name was OLCOTT.

Any information would be appreciated.

Joseph W. Orcutt (b. 1883)

Yet another Orcutt puzzle to come out of Connecticut. Can we just hire a researcher to set up shop there and work these out?! :-)

Joseph William Orcutt (b. Dec 15, 1883 in CT) shows up in a few city directories and one Federal Census (1930), but no where else (that I've found)! He married an Irene B. ? (b. 1893; d. Dec 20, 1964). The best I can tell, Joseph and Irene were married in 1926, this being the second wife of Joseph. Joseph was married first in 1906 - no idea to whom. I do know he had at least one child - Milton Joseph Orcutt (b. Oct 23, 1907; d. Apr 2, 1998).

Milton shows up in at least two censuses - 1920 and 1930. In 1920, he's a boarder with the Grubb family in Orange, CT.

So far, through directories, I've placed Joseph W. Orcutt in:

1906-1912: New Haven, CT
1918-1920: Waterbury, CT
1925-1930: Southington, CT

He died before 1961, as his wife shows up in Southington as a widow in that city directory.

So, if he was born in 1883, there should be at least three Federal Censuses to find him and I've found NOTHING! I've even taken the city directories, located the street, and gone page/page and he's not living in the locations listed in the directories!

Anyone out there have an idea who this guy is, and more importantly, who his father is?
John & Rosilla Bentley Orcutt, Parents of George Bentley Orcutt

I am trying to determine the parents of John Orcutt, who married Rosilla (or Rozilla) Bentley in New York, in perhaps Warren or Washington Counties area, circa 1838-1944.

Rosilla was born Rosilla Bengley, 14 Sept 1821, Queensbury, Warren County, NY to Richard Bentley and Dianah Vaughn.

John Orcutt was listed in the 1860 US Federal Iowa Census as being born in New York. The 1900 Census shows him living with his son George Bentley Orcutt, and states both his parents as being born in New York.

John's grave in Jackson County, Iowa, shows his birth year as 1819, and year of death 1900.

The US 1860 census shows that he was living in Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa, with Rosella, and sons Julius W Orcott - 15, born in New York, Winthrop Orcott, 12, Born in New York, George Bentley Orcott, 8, Born in Pennsylvania, Fred H Orcott - 3, born in Iowa, and Mary Palmer (12, from PA).

Assuming this is correct, I believe John & Rosilla were living in and did not leave Warren/Washington Counties area until sometime between 1847 and 1851.

The 1840 census shows a Stillman Orcutt Household with an "extra +20-30 yr old Male, an Eber H. Orcutt household with 3 males +20-30 besides the oldest male (60-70), and a John Orcutt, age +60-70,
living in Fort Ann, Washinton, NY.

There are also Caleb Orcutt, Rufus Orcutt, and Oliver Orcutt households in Jackson, Washington, NY listed in the same 1840 Census.

Anyone have further info on these families, or on John & Rosilla Orcutt specifically?

I am the Great-Great-Great Granddaughter of George Bentley Orcutt, IA.

I would greatly appreciate collaborative help!
Thanks!
When her first son was born in Sept. of 1800 she named him Orcutt Hyde. The closest Orcutt to Brookfield, Vermont, was Lemuel Orcutt of Randolph, Vermont and I believe he was her father.

In census records I am finding a Canadian-English link and both are listed as being born in NY. Silas married around Oneida County, but I cannot find the location he was born and cannot find Silas's parents listed as William & Phebe. Orcutt. My Albert was born 1859-1860. Silas was born 1830.The story in the family is that Albert was never allowed to go back to Canada. Which explains why many of my Orcutt's lived right on lakes like Erie & Ontario, so they could go back & forth, maybe, without detection.

We have info on the Orcutts and Burlisons back to 1813, and have connected them to New England. Jacob, David, Andrew, and Cyrus Orcutt were in Marcy, NY in 1840. Andrew and David were in Remsen, NY from about 1845 through 1860. David then went down to the Sauquoit, NY area - Andrew went west as did Cyrus. Ebenezer, Edward, and Miles Burlison were also in Marcy/Deerfield, NY in mid 1800s. Anyone else searching these lines? I also have a website on these surnames listed below in this message. Thank you for anything anyone may have on this.

http://jjones78.tripod.com/index.htm

Info on James Dwight Orcutt, Pennsylvania, New York?, Iowa

Hello all, I'm trying to find any information about my father's side of the family. His mother's name is Margaret, I'm not sure of his father's name, as his father died early of a heart attack...he has a brother named Art in Florida, a deceased brother Frank, a sister Carolyn, a sister Fern, and a sister Cathy (some are only half-siblings, but I'm not sure which ones.) He was originally from Pennsylvania, but I'm not exactly sure where. I know he spent some time in New York, and he has lived in Iowa now for quite some time...any info or possible relatives' replies would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Several years ago I purchased some photos at an antique store. The album contains photos of James & Mary Orcutt,
Helen & Charles Harts/children - Harry & Chelsie, and
Elsie O. Briggs. These photos were taken in Boston, Mass.
and Charlestown, Mass. If anyone is interested in digital copies of these photos, I would be glad to share them.
I have no family connection, but I like to purchase old photos that no longer have a family to love then. Contact me if you are interested in these photos.
B. J. Weems
