Classification: Query
Surnames: Gyles, Orders, Westwood, Wheeler, Tarbox, Washburn, Hatch, Fowler, McKune, Comfort
Sidney J. Orders appears in the 1901 cenus, age 13, b. abt 1888 in Lambeth, son of Frederick Orders and Mary (Westwood) b. in Norwood, Surrey. Mary died in 1903. I do not know when Frederick died.
Sidney was the grandson of George Orders and Caroline Arnold.
This family appears to have lived for several years in Hendon, Willesden, Middlesex.
My grandfather died in Gallipoli Apr. 25, 1915. He was 1st Battalion, regular, of the Lancashire Fusiliers. He is buried in Helles.
When the Battalion returned to England in January, 1916, my grandmother and her entire family (from Annestown, Ireland) emigrated to America through Ellis Island. My father was given his grandfathers last name, Gyles, at Ellis.
My father passed 8 years ago, and never knew anything about his English family, except that he was named after his father, whose last name was Orders and he was told by his grandmother that he was also a Westwood. He never knew for sure.
My Irish Grandmother destroyed all documents except for the death certificate from the Army and my grandfather's medals.
My father never had a birth certificate, and he tried to get it several years ago from England, but he didn't have all the required information, so for social security purposes they used the declared information at Ellis Island.
If anyone knows anything at all about the above families I would appreciate it.
Also, if anyone can help me figure out where to look for birth, and marriage information I would be grateful.
Thank you,
Sheila McCormack
