Orlando / Paffumi from Novara di Sicilia

My grandfather, Carmelo Paffumi, married Maria Orlando and brought her to the US in 1914. Both were born in 1891, probably in Novara di Sicilia, Italy (Messina area of Sicily). They had 6 children born in the US (Adeline, Anthony, Ernest, Richard, Robert, Francis) and lived in Lorain, Ohio before Maria died in 1933.

Looking for any information on parents or siblings of either grandparent. Carmelo was also known as Charles, and had a sister living in Rome, Italy in the 1990's. Paffumi may have also been spelled Pafumi.

Hello,
My name is Josann. My father was an Orlando. His name was Joseph R. Orlando, born in Reading, pa. He had a brother named Lawrence and sisters named Roseanne, Jeannett and Mary. They were raised in a home in Reading were Alvernia College is located. His father and mother were Nicolas and Angelina Orlando. My great uncles were Antonio and Samuel Orlando. Most of whom are now deceased. We are also related to the Cipolla family. I believe we are also related to the Distasio family. I am very interested in finding my family roots. Do any of these people sound familiar?

Sal,

Giuseppi Orlando of Third Street in Reading was our (John Orlando and Eugene) grandfather. Ignatzio was his brother and Grazia (born July 30, 1896) was his sister. There were three other girls: Margareta (1886), Pasqua (1893), and Angela (1902). My brother and I are going to Caronia on July 19 for 9 days to research for a novel we are doing on Grandpa Giuseppe. Maybe we can exchange some family information to fill in some gaps.

Eugene Orlando
orlando@EugeneOrlando.com

Hi my name is Leticia, Iam looking for information on my husbands grandparents. His grandfather was Rosario Crisci and was married to his grandmother and her Name was Marianna Rizulia Crisci. They both were from Sicly. He was born around 1901. We do know that they both came from a place by the name Lentini and i believe from there to Ellis Island. Later on they went to Nebraska and also to Ohio, and then to California. I think they had 8 or 9 kids all together. My husbands grandfather also went by the name Rossi and Rassi. My husband mother was Dolores Crisci. If have any information on this family we would surely appreciate it. You can email me at Leti.Blan1@yahoo.com Sincerely, Leticia

Anna and Giuseppe were both married and out of the house by 1930. That's why you don't see them in the census with the rest of the family. Also, Anne and Charlie are still alive. Anne will be 92 in March. Charlie has alzheimer's. My Dad was born in 1919, and grew up with his Orlando aunts and uncles almost as brothers and sisters, due to the ages being so close. As to the English names, my Dad's parents named their children with Italian first names, and no middle names, then after Confirmation the child usually used English versions of his first name with the English confirmation name as the middle name. That's how my Dad went from Giovane to John Michael. By the way, before he died in 1982, he gave me the Italian names of all his Orlando aunts and uncles. Your grandfather was born "Onofrio". Thomas was probably his confirmation name. Please reply to my email, and we can compare notes.

John

You had me confused when you said there son was Giuseppi, but your aunt emailed me and I know now that they are same. I found the 1930 census with all of them listed, but Maria is written as Mary, Nicolo as Nick, Carmelina as Millie, and my grandfather as Nick, Jr. (but his name is actually Nicholas Thomas Orlando - not Nicolo). This makes a lot of sense, I have aunts named Maria and Carmela! I replied to your aunt and I'm going to try and find some pictures to post online.

My grandfather didn't have any brothers by that name, and his oldest sibling was a sister named Vera. I have met three of his brothers and sisters, but I was very young. There names are Vera, Anne, and Charlie. I believe Charlie was married to a lady named Connie. They all came down to visit when my grandfather passed away in 1997. As far as I know, all his other brothers and sisters had passed away at that point.

My husband's grandfather's name was Dominicangelo Orlando and his gr-grandfather's name was Vincenzo Orlando -- both from Agnone. However, we have no relatives in the Chicago area, nor did we ever. All the ancestors emigrated to British Columbia, Canada. I think I somehow got included in a Chicago list because I was answering someone else (a long time ago) from Chicago who had ancestors with the same names. No luck for either of us.
Marg

As far as I know, I don't have any Menaldis in my family line, but I don't go back quite as far as the 1700's, only about 1820. As I mentioned before, the name Orlando seems to have been very common in Agnone. I will keep your post in my file, though. You never know.
Marg

Marg,
Did your group of Orlandos go directly to Canada or were they anywhere in the United States before they migrated to Canada?
I am descended from the same Orlando family as Beth. Your names are similar to our Orlando line.
I agree with Beth that the connection is probably in Agnone but I am interested in knowing if they spent any time in the states.
Barbara

Hi,

I'm from a different line but we're connected somehow. There was always an understanding that these two Orlando lines were related, but I think that anyone who remembers how is no longer around. I do know that some of Crispino and Angela's descendents went to Crivitz, Wisc. My greatgrandfather Madie (Emidio) Orlando retired up there as well.

You should talk to Tasha Treptow who posts here. She is also descended from Crispino Orlando and Angela Menaldi.

Do you have any other Agnone names that you're looking into?

Beth

I'm just in the early stages of researching my Orlando's. The only confirmed name I have is Maria Orlando born in 1860, married Giacomo Sineni/Senini (born 1850). They were both from Vicari, Sicily, Italy. They came to Chicago Illinois where their children also came a few years later and stayed.
Maria Orlando MAY have siblings by the name of Grace, Frank, and Frances - but this is unconfirmed yet. However they lived within a block of each other in Chicago.
Any info is helpful.
Please email me directly - rcnitrogirl@aol.com
Hello - Have been searching for family connection in Caronia, Sicily. Have military record for Antonino Vitale, who married my great grandmother Grazia Borchiero, in Caronia in 1900. Both were residents of Caronia. Triplet babies born to them, did not survive.

Antonino came through Ellis Island to Philadelphia and died between 1905 and 1909. He may have stayed briefly in Reading, PA, because his trunk has a label bearing a bakery with a Reading address.

Grazia and their daughter Fortunata came to Philadelphia in 1909. She remarried about 1912 - a Scafidi who also came from Caronia.

Any information would be welcome. Thanks.
My mother was Audrey the sister of Muriel Gruskin Orlando and I have been trying to find Muriel and Marijane for the longest while just to know what happened to the family and say hi. They have never met me but my mother missed her sister so much. My mother lived in Canada with Muriel and Joe for a short period. She thought Marijane was the cutest little girl and it broke her heart when Muriel left. Any info please e-mail me at magliarodianna@yahoo.com and let me know if Muriel is even alive ect. I would also like to do a family tree of realatives close and distant for my daughter Ariel so any information what so ever please contact me. Thank You.
