Surnames: CURTIS, HODGDON, HARRIS, SHEDD (?), ORMSBY, BRIGGS, BEEGAN -- 1800s

I've recently rescued a family picture album of what I believe is the extended Littlehale family from Quincy, Massachusetts. Surnames include Curtis, Hodgdon, Harris, Shedd (?), Ormsby, Briggs and Beegan. Almost all the pictures, from tin types to cabinet photos are labeled and in really good condition. The writing is a bit difficult to read, but when comparing to census records names can be determined. I will scan pictures to share; but my goal is to return this incredible picture album to direct descendants. Please contact me at suemanz.graham@comcast.net if you are interested. I am not related to or researching this family.

Duke Ormsby

Hi all,

I'm working on tracking down my great great great grandfather Duke Ormsby, who emigrated from Kilbelfad County Mayo in the mid 1800s and moved to York.

In the course of trying to find his father, I discovered that 'Duke Ormsby' was a common name in County Mayo/Sligo in the 1800s, and have come across quite a few men with the same name. I am convinced these Dukes are all connected somehow and so have been researching them all trying to make connections. If you have a Duke in your family tree, I'd love to hear from you.

And if you do, you'll probably find mention of him on the website I created called 'In Search of Duke Ormsby' at http://ormsby.wordpress.com/.

The site is a work in progress, so any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

(I'm also interested in the other Irish Ormsby families in York from 1851 as I believe they must all be closely related to my Duke).

Hi, don't know if this will help but I found this info on the name "Arwin Ormsby" at:
http://ca-files.biofiles.us/Ala1928-81-120.pdf
ELON ARWIN ORMSBY, M. D.
One of the leading physicians of southern Alameda county is Dr. Elon A. Ormsby, of Centerville, where for over two decades he has successfully practiced the healing art, having built up a large and remunerative practice. The Doctor was born at Petaluma, California, September 8, 1870, a son of Walter Alfred and Lucy Grace (Price) Ormsby, the former born at Ypsilanti, Michigan, and the latter at
Waukesha, Wisconsin. His father was a watchmaker by trade and was long in the employ of the Illinois Watch Company, serving as foreman for many years.
In 1868 he came to California, locating at Petaluma, where he engaged in watchmaking and where his marriage occurred. Later he became associated with his. father in the operation of the first planing mill in Petaluma, but the mill and lumber yard were destroyed by fire, entailing a heavy loss. Mr. Ormsby then went to work at the Blethern & Cary mill, at First and Washington streets, in Oakland,
but later resumed watchmaking, and his death occurred in that city in 1877. He was a republican in politics.
Elon A. Ormsby attended the public schools of Oakland, graduating from the old high school at Twelfth and Market streets, the first high school in that city. He then matriculated in the California Medical College, in San Francisco, and won the degree of Doctor of Medicine, in 1896. He engaged in the practice of his profession in Oakland, but about two and a half years later moved to Ransberg, this state, where he remained two and a half years, going from there to Concord and thence, three years later, to Linden, where he practiced two years. For the past
twenty-one years the Doctor has been in Centerville and has gained a wide reputation as an able and dependable physician.
In 1897 Dr. Ormsby was united in marriage to Miss Augusta N. Rodgers, who was born in England, a daughter of Dr. Samuel and Elizabeth (Nicholson) Rodgers. She came to this country at the age of eighteen years with her parents, who located first in San Francisco, but later moved to San Diego. Her father, who was a graduate of Oxford College, England, was a physician and was on the medical staff of the Bartholomew Hospital. He has also been a clergyman of the Protestant Episcopal church and had built several churches in England. Dr. and Mrs. Ormsby have five children, namely, Virginia Grace, Phoebe C., Arwina Elizabeth, Arwin Elon and Dorothy Marjorie. The Doctor is a stanch republican in his political views and is ready at all times to cooperate with his fellow citizens in all
movements for the betterment of the community along material, civic or moral lines. He is a member of Alameda Lodge, No. 167, A. F. & A. M., of which he is a past master ; Oakland Consistory, A. A. S. R.; and Aahmes Temple, A. A. 0. N. M. S., of Oakland.
This is John Out in CA. I read your info on the Irsih Ormsby's & noted that you seem to have a person for the Ormsby in Boothill. I've been there while working at Ft. Huachca during my working days. Hope it is true. We had always kinda suspected that that person was desc from a branch iof my line but we could never find any real connection. There were so many Ormsbys out in the "Wild West" in the 1800s. I will have to let my contact know of your info so they can read it too. Actually we are all related back to thru the Lincolshire line according to what I have been able to find.I come down from Richard who came here about 1635. Thanks John

My family came to CA in 1862 from WI. While we are not immediate family to these Ormsbys we are related. I am in contact with family members from that part of the line. Also the Ormsby buried in Boothill at Tombstone,AZ may be from that line. We have never been able to make a final connection however. Our family lived in Petaluma & then Ventura & Santa Barbara, however my family moved to the Central Valley in 1925. jwormsby@sbcglobal.net

I have an indenture a purchased at auction that is dated 1774. It places an Elijah Ormsbee to serve his indenture with an individual named Ezekiel Kent in Rehoboth Mass. My research indicates he was the son of a Daniel Ormsbee jr. who was married to Keziah Cummings . They had 10 children. Elijah was born in 1761 probably in Providence RI. I believe he helped invent a Steamboat and sailed it on the Seekonk river. I have found some relatives of some of the signers of the document. I recently sent a copy of the indenture to someone who thought she was a very distant cousin of Elijah. If any of this strikes a bell please contact me and I will provide an e-mail address so we can chat. Joe

Seeking information on George Lewis Ormsby and his unknown parents. Information I have indicates he was born on 16 Apr 1879 in Ballycakle, Co. Mayo, Ireland and died on 14 Aug 1967 at Coldstream, British Columbia, Canada, I suspect he was in Canada by the late 19th Century, perhaps with his parents. In about 1908 he married in Canada (Ontario?) Margaret Turner McArthur (B: 1 Dec 1885, Ontario, Canada;D:8 Sep 1973, Coldstream, British Columbia, Canada. One of the children of George Lewis Ormsby and Margaret Turner McArthur was Margaret Anchoretta Ormsby (1909-1996), a well known historian of British Columbia.

Ralph died as an infant in 1910, Kathleen never married and died about 1985 and Phyllis (died 1998 at the age of 93) married Wilbur Taylor (he died 1981) and lived in Winslow. They had one birth child, Douglas and one adopted child Carlene (who was actually Mary's grand daughter). Sorry I do not have the exact dates at hand but can easily get them.
Annie's son, Francis Hogan and wife Angel lived many of their years in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. I remember Annie living with them in the early 50's. There were several Hogan boys (six if I remember correctly. I remember a John and a Patrick)). Their son John has a quiry on this site, but I can't locate it off the bat.
Mary had a second marriage to Danny Sheehan. There were no children from this marriage.
Besides Mary, Isabel and Annie, John and Eliza had several other children; Sarah married twice, Patrick married twice, then there was Thomas, John, Ellenor (sic), Michael, Catherine later refered to as Kathleen, Mary, Elizabeth. John, Kathlene and Michael were still living in the family home in Relaghguiness, Ballinamallard, in 1955. I have a letter from Michael written to my mother in 1955 in which he gives bits and pieces of news about his siblings and their families.
Was John's wife really Eliza? She signed her letters that way, but my mother's middle name was Elizabeth and following the Irish naming tradition the first born daughter recieves the maternal grandmother's name. (If you're interested, I can send you a lock of Eliza's dark hair). She sent it to Isabelle as a joke because Isabelle's hair went gray very early.
Do you have any information on the McGarrity connection? There was a cousin (I think) Beth (Elizabeth?)McGarrity who ended up in the Biddeford-Saco area and married Hector Dubois. I have an idea that Beth came over with the Ormsby sisters. We always called her "Auntie Beth". I have a photo of the three sisters taken about 1943 and another with Annie, Isabell and Beth taken in that general era.
I'd like to get back another generation or more from John and Eliza. Would appreciate any information you can pass on to me

http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?ormsby::m... McGarrity family in Biddeford, Maine - Posted by: Linda Couture Date: March 02, 2002 - am seeking information on a Mary McGarrity (Magarity) who came to the US from Ireland in 1888. In 1893, she married George W. Chase, a farmer and Civil War veteran in Saco, Maine. They both are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Biddeford. She may have come to the states with some female relatives named Ormsby. I have uncovered some other McGarrity lines in Biddeford and wondered if anyone could connect Mary to these lines. I refer to Hugh McGarrity who married Mary (Minnie) Fearon in 1892. Also to a Hugh McGarrity who married Hannah Sheehan in 1906. Also John J., son of Hugh McGarrity and Jane Doran. John J. married Mora Callaghan in 1900. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

http://genforum.genealogy.com/hogan/messages/863.html Patrick Hogan, 1844 Ire-1900 ME - Posted by: Linda Couture Date: January 06, 2000 - Am seeking information on Patrick Hogan, born 1844 in Ireland. Also buried in the same grave at Kulpara is Mary Ann Ormsby, daughter of Caroline who died on July 24th 1903 aged 61 years. In addition to the original headstone there is a more recent bronze plaque and a second modern headstone in memory of George Francis Ormsby the husband of Mary Ann who died on 21st may 1916 and was interred in Adelaides West Terrace cemetery. The inscription on this stone goes on to say 'first pioneers of Ninnes Plains'. The couple seem to have lived in the Kulpara-Ninnes are for most of their adult lives as eight of their nine children were born in the area:- in order her children were Caroline Elenor b1865, Norwood; George William b1867, Wallaroo; Caroline b1869, Franklin Harbour; Francis Edward b1871, Ninnes Plains; Thomas b1873, Ninnes Plains; Alfred Henry b1876, Ninnes Plains; Beatrice Dora b1878, Ninnes Plains; Matthew Charles b1880, Ninnes Plains and May Rebecca b1881, Ninnes. It would seem that the grave had been restored and the later plaques placed by the local Historical Society or Council as a few kilometres away at Ninnes there is a plaque and an information board giving something of the history of Ninnes. It seems to have come into existence as a settlement after 1862 when a new route for bullock teams was pioneered between Clare and the copper mining towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo further to the west. It was recorded that George Ormsby had established and operated a wine-shop at Ninnes in the mid-1870's.

http://genforum.com/ormsby/messages/345.html
Ormsbys in South Australia
…great great grandfather was George Francis Ormsby b 1839 d 1916.
He married a Mary Ann Francis b 1842 d 1903, and they had a number of children.
I am looking for proof that Robert Ormsby and Nancy Gorin's were the parents of William Ormsby born approx 1827, Tennessee died 1864, Arkansas. I need this proof to complete a lineage application. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.
