Hello ... Raymond P. Sullivan (Sr.) born 1901or 1902 (I'd have to look at my paperwork) was the son of Willis Strawberry Sullivan and Susan Vestor Orndorff. I have a lot of info on these Sullivans (as I was married to R.P.S. III and my son is R.P.S. IV ! If you give me your e-mail address, I will forward the picture to you ... (and more if you like).
Sincerely,
Darcy

Hi Darcy,
I am trying to research this family and wondering if perhaps I am related. I am trying to find out specifically more about Raymond P. Sullivan born circa 1901-2. I think he was either the son or brother of the second Willis Strawberry Sullivan, who I think was the son of Willis Strawberry the first, and Susan Ornforf, if I am reading these posts right. Any information would be appreciated and would LOVE to see the pic of Willis Strawberry and Susan.

My research used a document named "Henne Zu Ohrndorff descendants", or facsimile, and cited the Ohrndorff name as beginning with Henne's father, Simon zu as first to use the name of Orndorff, in his lifetime. He was born 1544 so this takes the name back farther than the 1600's. Definitely nothing about Orndorfs other than in Germany in all the Orndorf trees I am now studying.

Here's excert from my reference: Henn zu OHRNDORFF was born about 1560 in Hof Ohrndorf, Freudenberg, Nassau-Siegen He died on 12 Jun 1616 in Hof Ohrndorf, Freudenberg, Nassau-Siegen.

Daniel W. Bly, author of From the Rhine to the Shenandoah, was kind enough to respond to an e-mail from us with an explanation of the "zu" in Henn's name. Daniel states that "this part of Germany was one of the last where peasant serfs were beginning to establish family names" and that "zu" means "from;" thus, Henn zu Ohrndorff -- literally Henn from Ohrndorff -- was more likely a "serf, attached to the farm and did not yet have the right to his own last name."

However his father before him is listed as using the Name Ohrndorff too...SIMON der HOFFMAN su Ohrndorff	B. 1544 D. 1594 at age Age 50 He lived in home with a * widow Barbara Zu Mentz

Yes, it was last year. The Antietam Park service did a wonderful job. The plaque was installed but covered. They had my sisters and I uncover it. Before that they had chairs for us to sit under a big oak tree and a ranger who had studied this Orndorff gave an oration on who he was and what he did. Then they had a table ginger tea and cakes for us to eat. It was like a funeral. In fact, 2 of my sisters were crying during the oration! I do have a picture of the plaque that was installed. I can send to you, if you give me your address. Or you can search for Johann Christian Orndorff and the picture should come up in pictures from the Zakacs Edwards tree. Because they didn't know where the actual graves are in the cemetery, they placed the plaque just inside the cemetery where visitors enter.

I am going to copy all of this info and look at it tomorrow, for starters, Roy Orndorff says that the Hampton you are referencing is identified as 'family' in his book An Orndorff Family (Philip Henrich & Elizabeth Orndorff/Arndorff and 'believed' that Elijah was part of the line cause of a 'West Virginia' tie...at any rate. I have downloaded books, bought books and looked at websites and trees galore the last few months and one thing is certain - there are errors EVERYWHERE. I can post the info he has in his book tomorrow. I've just about given up on all reference materials for what they represent and have been going through information line by line...The information I have gotten from old DAR records are even in error in some instances. On top of THAT - i found that most research has been done from the perspective of getting family members into DAR - which errors get copied over and over. Only I've found no record of where anyone has tried to link their tree to a Daniel Orndorff who served in the American Revolution, another mystery.

Thank You,
After your earlier message I went to the 1859 census to find the Orndorffs by looking up another name and found the same data on Elijah, James and Hampton, although they were very hard to read--did you use the census document out of Ancestor.com or another source. I also found the 1840 census you mentioned--the 2 males you thought ws shown as Hampton, I believe is named Madison-2 males between 20and 30(a bit hard to read) Hampton was shown on page 111 with 1 male between 20 to 30 and 1 female between 20 and 30. I laso determined, I assume you may have known this that Hampton was married to a Catherine in 1838.

I believe that you and I have spoken to each other before but I will give you what I know. I am tracing the Tarwater Family History. Most of my decendants are from the Oaktown area and I spend quite a bit of time down there in the summer months trying to find out more. Usually with no luck.
Elijah Orndorff married Ellen(Eleanor) Tarwater on Dec. 3, 1839 in Knox county, Indiana. This is listed in the Indiana State Library Genealogy Division "S-T", Indiana Marriages through 1850. In this record his name is Spelled "ORANDORF".
In the 1840 Census for Knox Co. Indiana, Elijah is listed with 1 male 20/30 and 1 female 20/30. Hampton is listed with 2 males 40/30 which makes no sense because he was born 3 years after Elijah.
In the 1850 Knox Co. Census Elijah is listed at age 36 with a wife and 4 children but it is his 2nd wife Emeline. There is also James Orndorff and his wife listed right after his family. I have not found Hampton on the 1850, but I might have just overlooked him.
On the grave marker at Oaktown Cemetery Elijah's first wife is on the marker. It is hard to make out and I believe it says that she died at age 48. I believe that is the year she died and not the age. If I am correct on this that would mean that she probably died in child birth with Philip. This is why I am trying to find anyone who has a marriage date for Elijah and Emeline Arnett or a death record for Eleanor Orndorff his first wife.
These records can't be found any place I've tried because of past fires and floods so I guess unless someone has a family Bible or documents from back then I'll always have this stone wall.
If I can answer anything or help in anyway just let me know. I am going to Oaktown Cemetery next week to place flowers

Re: Elijah Orndorff of Indiana

Just read your post. I have been trying to develop a tie between Elija Oendorffm my 2nd great grandfather and the Orndorffs of VA, for a long time. I recently started my search again and have come to some of the same conclusions as you. My latest research shows that in the 1860 Census, Elija and wife Emeline, Hampton Orndorff and Wife Lydia, Alfred Orndorff and wife Katherine and a Cynthia Orndorff (single mother?) were registered in the Oak Station, Busseron Twp, Knox Co Ind records. Both Elija and Hampton had real estate valued at 3000-a considerable amount at that time. There is also a Jno W. and a Sarah A. Racy in that same record.
The closeness of these people in the census records would indicate they live in close proximity to each other and having the same name could indicate a genetic relationship.
Further to this The 1850 Census in Fredrick, VA, District 16 shows amoung at least 7 Orndorff families the following: Alfred and his wife Catherine were living there--Alfred was the son of Samuel Orndorff(1777-1841), who was the son of Johannes Peter Orndorff. Also in those same records there was a John and a Mary a Racy living with Benjamin and Catherine Orndorff--same Racy name as in the Oak Station Census. Also in this Census were John and Benjamin, the sons of Johannes Philip. I have not bee able to find Elija or Hampton in the 1850 Census. Hampton appears in records which indicate he was the son of Philip(1767-1818, who was the son of Johannes Philip. Hampton was born in the Shenandoah Valley, VA--I read somewhere in Orndorff family information that after Philip died his offspring moved west-this would fit Hampton and possibly Elija if he was a son of Philip and a brother to Hampton. With Elija and Hampton and Alfred living next to each other in Indiana, it could not be a happenstance-to me it would indicate a brother or cousin relationship. One bothersome art of this analysis is that Elija's father is shown as being from England in the 1880 Census?? Hampton's is shown and being born in VA.
Your information re Eleanor Tarwater and the 4 offspring is new to me--
Would like to hear from you and if you have any futher information would like to hear it.
I am from the area in Indiana-Oaktown-where Elija lived, as I said he was m 2nd ggf.

Thanks

Bruce Leak

Orndorff, Orenduff, Orendorff

I need help from everyone decended from Jesse Orndorff/Orenduff/Orendorff born about 1771 and died on the Foster farm on Sept 14, 1846 OR any of the individuals related to the people below who have managed to find the links to established trees so I can rule them out. On another note, names. Jesse’s children – in the spirit of renaming from Orndorff to Orenduff – and his wife’s family from Kirtchman to Cashman – we believed that the names he chose – like Mexico – were in that spirit, however. There are similarities in the naming of the children of Jesse and “Betsy” cashman and children of some of the unidentified folks below…such as John William, William Henry, and daughters ‘Nancy” show in the descendents, esp with Elijah Orndorff and Henry Orndorff.

Our ancestor has been linked in one form or another to both Johan “Christian” Orenduff and Philip Henrich Ohrndorff who came to the US within a few years of each other. Only through tradition and speculation has he been connected. As I wait for Ancestry to confirm a link I think I have found through his military records, I have revisited a few records of ‘unresolved’ identities and have been further puzzled by the similarities.

Jesse 1771-1846. (my ancestor) Born in ‘maybe’ Winchester, Frederick, County, Virginia…most census and documentation, records and newspapers, biographies say ‘Virginia’ although in later years he notes “West Virginia” . His marriage and children’s information is well documented with the exception of one child – who died young.

Issac Ornduff – 1838-1893 – moved to California…many descendants of Jesse moved to California and his daughter Cora visited there quite often. His obituary states that he was a member of the Knights of Honor – and so was every one of Jesse’s children. Because he was born in Virginia (and at the time of writing the book for Philip Henrich) they TRIED to at the time link him to their tree.

Elijah Orndorff – 1815-1888 – another Frederick County, Virginia man who moved to Indiana – people have tried to diligently link him to Philip Henrich’s tree.

Henry Orndorff – no birth, death or marriage. But shows up in the 1820 census in Perry County, Ohio.

John Orndorff – about 1789 to 1878, Federick County, VA southeast corner.
Elijah Orndorff of Indiana

I am trying to find the parents of Elijah Orndorff born 10 Nov 1815 in Virginia and died 11 May 1888 in Oaktown Indiana. He married Eleanor Tarwater on 3 Dec 1839 and I believe they had 4 children before her death: John W.,Martha A, James A., and Phillip. After Eleanor's death he married Emeline Arnett and they had the following children: Elijah, Andrew W., Barnet and Nancy Ellen.
They lived in Knox County Indiana and at this time period there was also an Alfred Orndorff born about 1816 in Virginia and a Hampton Orndorff born about 1818 in Virginia that lived here also. I believed that they might have been brothers but my research can really find no connection which I find odd.
I believe Hampton was the son of Phillip Orndorff who was the son of Johannes Peter Orndorff and his first wife Eva Barbara??? and Alfred was the son of Samuel Orndorff, the son of Johannes Peter Orndorff and his 2nd wife Hannah McIlwee.
Any help with this would be very welcome

Janet White

Hello, thanks for your reply. Actually, I am researching Rebecca Orndorff on behalf of my sister-in-law's mother. Her mother was Mary Phillips, daughter of Rebecca. She was given the last name of Phillips, but her biological father could be a man named Frank Caliguri or Caligari. I am trying to find out about the father of Mary. If you can help, I would appreciate it. Is this book you referred to available at other sites, or just Cornerstone? Thanks, Jo Nell

Jo -- I show Rebecca as a daughter of Phineas Orndorff (9/11/1827-3/29/1900) and Elizabeth Kimble (6/19/1831-1/24/1924). I show Rebecca as the 8th child of this union and born between 1863 and 1872. She first married Leasure Spraggs and had a daughter Nora Ethel on 11/4/1887. She then married Winfield Scott Phillips and had at least eight children. Ray F. in 2/1893, Bessie M. on 3/10/1896, Ruth - unk date, Clyde - unk date, Tracy E. and Charles M. on 11/2/1901, Nora - unk date and Mary - unk date.

I have no info on Frank Caligari or Bill Sweeney.

That's where Carol Bricker was about 2 years ago, too. I believe Roy L. Orndorff only had one brother - his name was Martin.

I just attended my 50th high school reunion last October, and I was remembering when Mr. Orndorff was going to attend his 50th and I said to him that I hoped to live long enough to attend my 50th (I was about 35 at the time)and that I would be as healthy as he was. I wish I had written down all he told me because now they are only scattered memories. I do remember him telling me about his first "love", and the time he made moonshine in his apartment in Washington, DC during prohibition. He and Dorothy lived in Northeast WAShington and he had made some for his own use, put it under the sink in the kitchen, and one night he heard a horrible explosion. Went to check the source, and found glass and moonshine all over his kitchen. It had blown up. It may have been home brew rather than moonshine.

Mr. Orndorff also had a gun from the Civil War that was used by the North and the South. Can't remember which of his ancestors used it, but a northern soldier had fallen, Mr. O's ancestor picked it up and used it. - or was it a fallen southern soldier? At the time, I can't remember which side his family fought for.

I have a note from the mid to late ninety's that says that Roy's daughter may (and I repeat -- may) have some copies of the book she would sell. Her name is / was at the time Carol Elizabeth Bricker and she was living in Rochester, Michigan.

"The Christian Ohrndorf Family in Germany" which provides information of their lives in Germany before coming to America. The other is "From Mill Wheel to Plowshare" which details their life in America. The second book was written in the 1930's and the other in 1960's. You should be able to at least obtain a copy from your local library. They can borrow it from a library that has a copy - even if out of state. To purchase either, I just kept searching the web site for these books until I found someone who was selling. It took about 1-2 years for me to get the book written in the 1960's and it cost me almost $150 because it is out of print, but I'm glad to have. Good luck
